Kostel svatého Vavřince (Žákava) Church

The Church of Saint Lawrence in Žákava is a Roman Catholic church located in the village within Plzeňský kraj. It is recognized as a significant cultural heritage site, protected since 1958. The oldest part is its presbytery, featuring star-shaped vaulting from the early 14th century. Over time, it has undergone various modifications, including a notable Baroque transformation in the 18th century that gave it its current appearance.

The first documented mention of the church and local rural parish dates back to 1354, during the Luxembourg dynasty's rule over Bohemia—a period marked by significant cultural and architectural development across Central Europe. The original structure included the presbytery with star-shaped vaulting from the early 14th century, one of its most ancient elements. Historical sources suggest that other parts such as the nave's walls, triumphal arch, and presbytery window were also part of the initial construction. A sacristy was added during the medieval period, indicated by the thickness of its walls, hinting at a possible original tower.

Throughout its history, the church experienced several modifications. It underwent changes at the end of the 14th century and in the 16th century before significant Baroque renovations in the 18th century. These included adding a choir, a western entrance, and new windows to enhance architectural appeal. The tower and roofs were likely constructed towards the late 18th or early 19th century, contributing to its present-day appearance.

Architecturally, the Church of Saint Lawrence is characterized by its single-nave design with an oblong ground plan. The presbytery at the eastern end features a six-ray star vault and adjoins a four-sided tower capped with a pyramidal roof. To the north, a sacristy with a square plan and flat ceiling connects to the presbytery, featuring semicircular arched windows. Surrounding the church is a Baroque cemetery wall, adding to its historical ambiance. Additionally, a protected statue of Saint Wenceslas stands adjacent to the church, enhancing its cultural significance.

The interior reflects its rich history with predominantly early Baroque furnishings dating back to the late 17th century. The main altar, adorned with acanthus motifs and featuring a sculpture of Saint Lawrence, dominates the space. Two side altars from the same period complement the main altar; one depicts Saint Wenceslas while the other shows the Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon and serpent. A pulpit dating back to 1637 adds historical charm.
