Kostel svatého Wolfganga (Hnanice) Church

The Church of St. Wolfgang in Hnanice is a remarkable late Gothic church with historical significance, especially its miraculous holes in the chapel of St. Linhart. Located in the village Hnanice in Jihomoravský kraj, this three-boat building dates back to the end of the 15th century and serves as a pilgrimage site until the end of the 18th century. Its architectural development from Gothic origin to baroque modification reflects its rich history and cultural importance.

The church dates back to a small chapel dedicated to St. Wolfgang in the late 13th century, built over a well which is believed to have healing powers. This early structure laid the foundation for what would become an important pilgrimage place. By the end of the 15th century, the need for more space led to the construction of an existing Gothic church. This ambitious project, launched around 1480 by Abbot Pavel of the Loucký monastery, focused on accepting an increasing number of pilgrims and their victims. The building began with the tower in 1482, so the old church remained functional during the transition.

The architectural design of St. Wolfgang Church is a testament to its historical context. The late Gothic style is visible in its three-boat structure and elevated structure. Lorenz Spenning, known for his work on St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, probably led the construction effort. Despite financial constraints and church challenges, the church was completed 1498 with planned but unfinished Chancel. The original Gothic vaults suffered damage in the fire around 1645, which led to its replacement by the lower baroque vaults during the reconstruction between 1657 and 1660.

The Church of St. Wolfgang has recorded various administrative changes throughout its history. In 1518 she obtained independent spiritual administration, while the clergy of the Loucký monastery served as parish priests.
