Kostel svatých Filipa a Jakuba (Roztoky u Jilemnice) Church

The Church of Saints Philip and James, located in Roztoky u Jilemnice within the Semily district of Liberecký kraj, is a Baroque church completed in 1739. It stands out for its red sandstone architecture and an adjacent cemetery featuring significant 19th-century sculptural works.

The site's religious history dates back to at least 1384 when an original church on a hill in the village was managed by its own priest. This structure, burned during the Hussite wars, was rebuilt but eventually became inadequate due to its small size and difficult access, especially in winter. A new, larger church was then constructed in the village center, completed in 1739. An independent parish was established here in 1788.

The current building is a single-nave Baroque structure made entirely of red sandstone with slanted corners. Its western facade features a massive square tower topped by an onion dome and a poppy seed. While the nave and presbytery have flat ceilings, the entrance area beneath the tower has a cross vault. A wooden gallery in the western part of the nave is supported by richly carved columns. A chapel and sacristy are attached to the sides of the presbytery.

The interior houses valuable furniture and specific devotional elements, including altars dedicated to St. John of Nepomuk and Our Lady of Lourdes.

Surrounding the church is a cemetery with 18 valuable tombstones showcasing 19th-century sculptural artistry. Notable examples include a neo-Gothic artifact from 1874 for Antonín Mečíř and an 1880 monument for the Mečířovy family, both by Antonín Sucharda of Nová Paka; the latter features a 140 cm sculpture of a weeping angel leaning on a tree stump with a foliage-decorated cross. Other significant markers include the 1879 Classicist tomb of the Chrtkovy family with a cast iron cross, the 1854 stepped base of the Klazarovy family decorated with acroteria, and the mid-19th century Classicist tomb of the Janouškovy family.

Additional sculptural works include the 1859 tomb of the Kuželovy family with plant motifs on a segment cornice, the 1867 rustic base of Josef Boušek, and the 1870 rustic base of the Schreinerové family featuring a cross shaped like a tree trunk adorned with a flower wreath. The cemetery also contains an unnamed square base made from weathered light sandstone.

This site serves as a central spiritual landmark for the local community and preserves a significant collection of regional Baroque and 19th-century art, attracting those interested in red sandstone architecture and historical funerary sculpture.
