The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Veletov is a neo-gothic building from the end of the nineteenth century and today serves as a filial church of the parish of Kožívice, which falls under the Kutnohorské-Poděbrada vicariát royal hradec diocese. In 2001, the church was designed to be entered in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic.

The roots of Veletova reach into the Middle Ages. The village appeared for the first time in written sources already in 1306 and in the Middle Ages it was a separate plebania, i.e. a separate rural parish. A significant role in her life was played by the tankers from the Sedlek monastery near Kutna Hora, who had the patronage of the parish and church. This condition lasted until the Hussite wars, when Kutna Hora took possession of the property Veletova and took over the patronage of the church. The fellow monks tried to get the village back, but without success.

Veletov plebania disappeared during the Thirty Years' War and its fate has since been closely linked to the neighboring parishes. The village was first added to Kolín, but since 1718 it fell under the administration of the neighboring parish Kořívice, where it remained today.

At the beginning of the last decade of the nineteenth century, the medieval church became unsustainable. In 1895, the original temple was demolished due to severe decaying. Soon afterwards, the construction of a new church in a neo-gothic style, which grew up in the place of the old храm. The ceremony of the new Veletov church took place in July 1897.

The architecture of the church reflects the typical features of the neo-gothic era. It is a chamber structure of a rectangular plan with a recessed and narrowed presbytery, which is closed by a rectangular conclusion. On the north side of the presbytery lies a small sacristy, on the south side a relatively high tower. The interior is equipped with a uniform pseudo-gothic device, as well as a pseudo-gothic painting that completes the overall atmosphere of the temple.

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary thus represents a crucial point in the history of Veletov when it embodies not only the loyalty of tradition, but also the ambition of the village at the end of the nineteenth century. Its architecture and appearance are a testament to aesthetic preferences and building culture for the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

The Veletov Church of the Virgin Mary is a neo-Gothic building from the late nineteenth century. It stands on the site of an older church and today serves as a subsidiary church under the parish of Konárovice. That falls under the Kutná Hora–Poděbrady vicariate of the Royal Hradec diocese. In two thousand and one, the church was proposed for entry into the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic.

Veletov itself is first documented in writing in the year thirteen hundred and six. In the Middle Ages there was an independent rural parish here. The right of patronage over the parish and church was held by the Cistercian monks from Sedlec Monastery near Kutná Hora. The monastery held it until the Hussite wars. After that, Veletov together with the patronage over the church passed into the ownership of the city of Kutná Hora. The Sedlec monks tried for some time to recover the village, but they were unsuccessful.

During the Thirty Years' War, the Veletov parish ceased to exist. The village was first attached to Kolín, and from seventeen eighteen it was attached to the neighbouring parish of Konárovice. The original little church meanwhile fell into disrepair until it was torn down in eighteen ninety-five. Soon after that the construction of a new church in the neo-Gothic style began. It was solemnly consecrated in July of eighteen ninety-seven.

The church is a modest structure with a rectangular ground plan. The nave is followed by a narrower and recessed presbytery, that is the space around the main altar, and it ends at right angles. From the north a small sacristy adjoins it, and from the south a relatively high tower. Inside there is unified pseudo-Gothic furnishings and the wall paintings are executed in the same spirit.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit Veletov and his neo-gothic church is during a quiet morning, when the morning sun radiates beautifully the exterior of the building and there is peace to contemplate. It is possible to use a passenger car and local public transport for transport to the village, while the current connection is best checked in the common search engine. With you on the trip we recommend taking comfortable shoes to walk around and camera to capture this chamber sacral monument. Photographers have the best light for pictures of the entire building and surrounding area in the morning when the rays reach the facade. In the wider area within 30 minutes of the journey there is a parish of Kožnívice, where this church falls, and also the historical town of Kutna Hora.

Seasonal recommendations

The spring visit to the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Veletov offers a unique atmosphere of the awakening Polish nature, when the surrounding landscape is fresh green and the trees in the surrounding area begin to bloom. The low sun creates fine side lighting that highlights the outdoor architectural details of the building. There are almost no crowds of tourists here during this period, which guarantees complete peace of mind. Since the soil in the surrounding area is wet and temperatures can be variable, we recommend fixed waterproof shoes and warmer windbreaker. The best time for an outdoor tour is in the morning, when the morning fog above the nearby river recedes to the spring sun.

Summer Months Bring To Veletova full power of sunlight, which thanks to the open space around the church radiates the memory for most of the day and gives it a bright look. In nature, the growing meadows and the singing of birds are dominated by an idyllic rural well-being. As this is the main tourist season, visitors sometimes appear on cycling trips along the Elbe; But this place avoids mass crowds. On hot days you will appreciate light breathable clothes, headgear and plenty of drinking water, because in the immediate vicinity of the monument you will not find shady forests. The ideal time to visit is either early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun's rays are soft and the temperature is falling to more pleasant values.

Autumn time covers the church in melancholic moods, which it completes with leaves coloured in golden and rusty tones and frequent morning hares over the Polish plain. The sun's rays are already below the horizon and create extended shadows that provide extraordinary depth and dramatic tones to the sights. Tourism is falling apart at this time, so you will enjoy the whole location alone. The weather is windy and cold, which is why it is necessary to carry layered clothes, a hat and a non-inflatable jacket. The best light conditions for admiring architecture can be reached around noon, when the sun breaks through cloud cover for at least a moment.

The winter season turns Veletov into a quiet, monochrome landscape, where the snow cover often contrasts with the dark outlines of the historical walls of the church. Lighting is usually very specific, dark and daylight is rapidly declining, which creates a raw but very impressive advent atmosphere. As you move here in an open area exposed to cold winds from the river, it is necessary to wear a quality winter jacket, warm gloves, scarf and robust shoes with anti-slip soles. The best time for a short and rapid visit is around noon, when the outdoor temperature is highest and the sun provides at least a slight light to view the exteriors.
