Kostelec Castle, also referred to by its German name Vestenhof, stood above a pond in the northern part of the village of Kostelec near Jihlava. Today, only inconspicuous traces of it remain in the terrain.
Few written records about the castle have survived. It was probably founded sometime in the thirteenth century. It is certain that it stood in the years thirteen sixty to thirteen sixty-six, when Oldrich and Nicholas Hamr of Kostelec were named after it in documents. In thirteen sixty-four, Havel of Pacov is listed as the owner. The castle then came into the possession of Jaroslav of Sternberg, but later returned to the Havels' hands. By fourteen sixty-four, sources no longer mention the castle, so it must have been destroyed sometime before that year.
One of the first to attempt to determine the location of the castle was historian August Sedláček. In his work from eighteen eighty-five, he placed it on a promontory above the pond. To the east of the castle and lower in the terrain, according to him, lay the remains of a fortified farmhouse.
