Kozmice, also known as Na Valech, are the remains of a extinct medieval fortress in one named village northeast of Benešov in Central Bohemia. From the 13th to 15th century they served as a seat of local flags and are now protected as a cultural monument.
The fortress was probably founded in the 13th century when the position of the lower nobility was strengthened and the network of small fortified settlements expanded.
Architecturally, they represent a motte-type fortress, which is a fortified hill. The central hill was surrounded by a deep moat of eight meters on the outside of which there are visible fragments of the wall. The eastern part of this ditch was later buried during the construction of the former school building.
In the middle of the 14th century, the village belonged to Joroš from Kozmice. Later there was Přisnak, who co-performed the right to the St. Havel Church in Teplášovice between 1358 and 1409. After his death in 1416 at the latest, Václav, a former land record-writer (1408-1413), received all death. Václav married Dorota, who in 1417 and 1418 sold the villages of Zagrona, Teplášovice and Mrchojeda. In the middle of the 15th century he was the owner of Petr z Kozmic, mentioned in 1454 as a descendant of local flags.
The documented events include 1405, when Přisnak and his wife Markéta received permission to link their farm. The breaking point for the building was 1454, when Kozmice became part of the Cannabis estate. In this year Zdeněk Konopišťský ze Šternberka received after the deceased John of Žiřice all death related to the Kozmich fortress with accessories. The fortress subsequently ceased to exist during the 15th century.
Today, only the fortress, which is an important witness to the past of this region, is preserved on the ground.
Kozmice represents a valuable archive of medieval fortified architecture around Benešov. Visiting this place allows you to perceive the trail of a degraded noble residence in the landscape.

Welcome to a place full of history and secrets - you are facing the extinct fortress Kozmice, also known as Na Valech. This place, located northeast of Benešov, awaits you with silent stories of the past and remains of architectural majesty. Look around you: before you is a fortress, which today looks like a sleeping hill covered with bushes and trees. Although his festive buildings no longer tell their history, the atmosphere here is charged with the presence of the past.
Let's immerse ourselves in the origin and historical context of Kozmic. The fortress was built in the 13th century as a seat of local flags, which ruled their territory here. In 1358 Přisnak begins to co-exercise the right to give to St. Havel's Church in Teplášovice, which shows the extensive power and influence that the owners of Kozmic had. In 1405, Přisnak and his wife Markéta became heirs of the estate, which further strengthened their position.
Architectural was a motte-type fortress - a fortified hill with a central hill surrounded by a deep moat of eight meters. The eastern part of this ditch was buried in a building that served as a school. Even though visible tracks are limited today, note the shape of the hill and its positioning - this was the core of the fortress's defence system.
The key personalities associated with Kozmicemi are Joros, Přisnak, Václav and Petr z Kozmic. Their stories intersect with the history of this place. It is particularly interesting that in 1454 the fortress became a part of the Cannabis estate under the leadership of Zdeněk Konopistský z Šternberk. This transition meant the end of the independent existence of Kozmics and the beginning of a new chapter as part of a larger estate.
The interesting thing that you might notice is that even though the fort had disappeared, its name "Na Valech" persisted and still refers to its original location. The fort stands as a witness to past times when this place was the center of power and life.
