Křížová cesta (Lutová) Way of the cross

The cross road in Lutova is a Baroque monument, which originally led to the pilgrimage church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary in Třeboňska. It is located in the northwest part of the village in the cemetery near the Church of All Saints and is protected as a real cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Its history dates back to the second half of the 18th century when it was created with 14 Baroque granite columns. After the removal of the pilgrimage church, the columns were moved to the Lutova cemetery, where they are still without pictures.

The history of this monument is closely linked to the creation and fate of the pilgrimage church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary. In 1666, this church was built by Adam Pavel Slavata, then owner of the Puppet Manor, to thank the Virgin Mary for saving her life. The church became an important pilgrimage place and it was led by a Baroque road with fourteen granite posts which were produced in the second half of the 18th century. After the church was abolished for Josef II, when the church was dismantled and its building material divided, the columns moved to the Lutova cemetery. Here, 13 columns are preserved without pictures.

Cross-road architecture is characteristic of the Baroque style that dominated European architecture at the time. The columns are made of granite and their design reflects rich decoration and emotional expression typical of Baroque. Although the original columns were without pictures, their location in the Lutova cemetery still resembles a spiritual journey connecting worldly and religious life.

The abolition of the church and the distribution of its building materials were key events that affected the fate of the crossroad. Today, the ruins of the Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary are still an important pilgrimage place, and the Roman Catholic parish Chlum in Třeboň organizes an annual pilgrimage event before the ruin.
