The Mikulov Way of the Cross on Svatý kopeček is one of the oldest in the Czech lands, established around 1700 by František z Ditrichštejna. Located in Mikulov, this baroque monument was created to express gratitude for surviving a plague epidemic in 1622 and has been declared a national cultural monument since 2018. The site features 18 chapels and offers visitors a journey through history and spirituality.

František z Ditrichštejna, bishop of Olomouc and cardinal, founded the Way of the Cross. Inspired by Svatý kopeček's resemblance to Golgotha, he commemorated the end of the 1622 plague epidemic. The initial construction included seven stations dedicated to Mary’s sorrows, with the first chapel consecrated on July 2, 1623. Additional chapels were added between 1750 and 1776, culminating in a site with 18 structures solemnly consecrated in September 1776.

Architecturally, the Mikulov Way of the Cross is characterized by its baroque style, featuring both original and later additions. The initial seven stations expanded to include six "sculptural" chapels carved into rock between 1750 and 1776, highlighting dramatic expressions typical of the Baroque period. Each chapel contains sculptural decorations dating back to around 1700, depicting scenes from Christ’s Passion. Notable among these is the Chapel of St. Sebastian, commemorating the patron saint against the plague, along with chapels illustrating events such as Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane and his crowning with thorns.

Ownership has largely remained within the Ditrichštejn family since its inception. However, church reforms under Emperor Joseph II led to a period of disuse from 1786 until restoration efforts began in 1862 under Augustin Bartenstein. These restorations were completed by 1865, and the tradition of pilgrimage to Mikulov's Black Madonna was established that same year, although it was interrupted during World War II.

The site has witnessed several key events throughout its history. The foundation stone for the chapel of St. Sebastian was consecrated in 1623, marking the beginning of this spiritual journey. In 1776, the Way of the Cross with its expanded number of chapels was solemnly consecrated. Additionally, a votive painting from after 1624 depicts František z Ditrichštejna venerating Bohemia's patron saints, highlighting the site’s religious significance.
