The cross stone near the grove house Dostálka is a significant small monument in the forests north of Pilsen, near the village Bolevec. This sandstone object is listed on the list of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. It represents a rare type of historical stone whose origin and purpose remain the subject of expert discussions.

The oldest history and the creation of the monument were preserved only a few messages. The building is so untypical that similar monuments occur only exceptionally on the border of the districts of Pilsen-North, Louny and Rakovnik. Although the shape of the stone resembles anthropomorphic stalks from southern France and northern Spain, a direct link to these areas is unlikely. There is a presumption that the stone could be a customs mark at the border of Pilsen's mile law, but there is insufficient evidence to support this claim.

The monument is made up of a sandstone plate 86 cm high with a round top of 56 cm wide. On the front is a clear positive relief of an isosceles cross 36 centimeters wide. In the centre of the circle is also carved less conspicuous positive relief of the Latin cross with slightly expanding arms, which reaches a height of 33 centimetres. The back of the plate is completely smooth and without decoration. The surface of the stone is heavily stale due to weather conditions, which makes it impossible to assess the quality of the original stone processing in detail.

In the past, the object has been repeatedly damaged, laid down or broken. A major break in memory care occurred in 1985 when a thorough repair was carried out to prevent its demise. Before 1988, the stone was officially entered on the list of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic under registration number 24420 / 4-4481.

There's a popular reputation for killing a butcher or a girl. According to the story, the victim was supposed to be holding a bun in his hand, which gave the name of the forest surrounding it, which the locals call "The Frog.".

Today the cross stone is located above the west side of the road leading to the Záluží, in the space between the Hájovna Dostálka and the turn to Ledec. Despite the considerable damage caused by time, this artifact remains an important example of the historic settlement and management of the landscape north of Pilsen. Visiting this place offers the opportunity to become acquainted with one of the most important small monuments in the region, which, despite its unclear past, represents valuable historical testimony.

Welcome to the silence and tranquility of the painful forests, a place where nature encounters ancient history. Stop for a moment, take a deep breath of the forest smell and look straight ahead. Right here, in the green embrace north of Pilsen, stands a silent witness to the past you came to visit. There's a cross stone in front of you by the grove house. At first glance, it may look like an inconspicuous piece of rock that has fallen into the landscape, but if you approach it, you will see that it is a carefully worked sandstone that has been here for hundreds of years.

Now let's think together about how this rock got here in the first place and what it really means. The historians and experts estimate that it was created around a year and a thousand. So imagine the world more than five styles ago, a time when these woods looked different and people perceived space and faith quite differently. To this day, the exact purpose of this stone remains the subject of expert discussions, making it one of the great mysteries of the region. There are two main theories. The first one says he could have served as a peace mark. The peace stones were built at the time in places where there was a tragic event or murder, as a symbol of repentance and redemption of guilt. The second option is more practical and suggests that the stone could serve as a boundary sign that clearly separated two areas or a property interface. Whatever the truth, this stone stands here as an anchor in time that connects us to the people of the early sixteenth century.

Now pay attention to the appearance of the monument itself. If you approach her close, notice her resemblance. This is a sandstone that reaches an height of 80 centimeters. Its upper part is not sharp but finely rounded, which gives the whole building some harmony. Look at the front of the stone. This is where you find the most important thing. The painting of the cross is carved in the surface. Note that the main cross is isosceles, which means that its vertical and horizontal axis have the same length. Next to it, you can see a second, smaller cross, which has specific arms that widen towards the vena.

When you observe the surface of the stone, you'll probably notice it's not smooth or sharp. Sandstone is a beautiful material, but also fragile. After centuries of exposure to wind, rain, frost, and sun, the surface of the monument is heavily stale. Nature was gradually owning this stone and its influences erased the subtle details that once existed. It is this wasteland that is a challenge for professionals because it makes it difficult to analyse the stone processing in detail. We cannot determine exactly what tools the carver used or what particular workshop the stone comes from. Yet in this volatility lies a certain beauty and truth of time.

Who created this stone? Unfortunately, the names of architects or stonemasons remained in oblivion. We don't even know the personalities that would be connected to this particular place as part of the written record. It's a fascinating idea that a work that survived half a millennium has no appointed author. It's an anonymous gift from the past. However, in more recent history, the monument has its recorded milestones. In a thousand and nine hundred and eighty-five, a thorough repair and preservation was carried out to prevent further disintegration of sandstone and to preserve the cross symbols for future generations. Three years later, in the year one thousand nine hundred eighty eight, the stone was officially listed on the list of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic, thereby obtaining state protection and recognition of its historical value.

Now I want to impress you with one fact that makes this stone a real one. You may think that similar cross boards are common in our lands, but they're not. Similar monuments occur only exceptionally. They are concentrated in a narrow zone on the border of today's Pilsen-North, Loun and Rakovník. So you stand before one of the very few specimens of your kind. This rarity suggests that there was a specific tradition or cultural stream in this particular area which led to the creation of these sandstone characters. It's like looking for a needle in the den, and you're standing by it right now.

Try to close your eyes for a moment and imagine how many people have passed this stone in the last 500 years. Maybe there was a time when pilgrims stopped here, maybe there were important talks about land borders, or someone here quietly remembered someone close. The Stone at Dostálka is not just a piece of sandstone, it is a memory of the landscape that is silent, but also tells a story about faith, about ownership and the fleeting of everything material.

Before we say good-bye and you go on your way, I suggest you go around the rock from different sides one more time and see how the light penetrating the trees falls on it. Let yourself be consumed by the atmosphere of this place where time is stopped. Křížový kámen u Dostálky is a reminder that even the smallest monuments can be of great importance if we stop over them and try to understand their silent messages.

I'm going to invite you to explore the area. Continue your walk through the woods of Bolevce, look for more clues of history and enjoy the peace of nature that this sandstone cross so faithfully guards. Thank you for stopping by this fascinating monument. I wish you a pleasant journey and many other discoveries in our beautiful landscapes. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is during the day in clear weather, when the sun rays falling on the sandstone plate better draw relief crosses. The forest environment offers pleasant cool in the summer months, while autumn leaves provide a mysterious atmosphere.

You can get to the monument by forest roads in the area north of Pilsen. We recommend choosing fixed shoes suitable for field movement and taking with you a repellent, especially in warmer months, when there is an increased incidence of insects in the woods.

It is ideal to use the side light to highlight the depth of the carved cross. The best shots are taken from the immediate vicinity, with surrounding forest vegetation providing a natural background that underlines the historical importance of stone.

In the immediate vicinity there is a grove hall Dostálka and a road leading towards Záluží. This area is ideal for nature walks that you can combine with observing a minor monument in its natural forest environment.

For families with children the trip is suitable as part of a sightseeing walk through the forest. Children can explore the details of the relief on the stone and learn about the history of the region in the field, while the movement around the grove is safe and undemanding.
