The crucifix in the Hylvates is a classic sandstone monument from 1819, located in front of the chapel of Saint Anne. This five-metre building is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and represents an important example of religious architecture in the early nineteenth century.

The memorial was created during the period when classicism developed in Czech countries, which followed the wars of Naples. The architecture of that time often reflected the aesthetic ideals at that time.

The construction is made of sandstone and placed in a fence formed by a balustrad with a shallow bulging forehead. In the middle there is a low prismatic, seared base on which stands a pillar decorated with volutes and ended with a profiled ledge with a dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit. The relief of the Painful Virgin Mary is preserved on the front.

The square base contains a decorative rectangular frame with illegible German inscription on the front. The back side is smooth and has a shallow frame after an unpreserved inscription board, underneath which is engraved roaring 1819.

On the ledge of the first pillar stands another, narrower pillar with reliefs of skull, legs and snake on the front. Above these elements are depicted the heads of the angels and in the round target is the heart of the Lord. This pillar ends with a profiled ledge.

On the ledge of the upper pillar stands on the low pedestal a cross with the sandstone corpus of Christ and the inscription INRI above his head. The cross has short shoulders that are triple-ended.

Since 1958 this building has been protected as a real-estate cultural monument of the Czech Republic and in 2017 it has undergone a complete restoration.

Krucifix is located in part of the municipality Hylváty in the district of Ústí nad Orlicí. It is a suitable goal for visitors who are interested in classical symbolism and detailed processing of sandstone reliefs.

Welcome to the Hylvates, where they have just found themselves in front of the unique monument of our cultural history - crucifix at the chapel of Saint Anne. This Classicist sandstone monument is a real work of art and architecture that stands as a challenge of time before your eyes.

Let's look at its origin first. The crucifix was created in 1819, a period when classicism flowed in Central Europe. This style, known for its symmetry and harmony, was also reflected in religious monuments of the time. The crucifix in the Hylvates is therefore not only a spiritual centre for local people, but also an example of how artistic and architectural trends also affected the religious sphere.

Look up at the crucifix. Its height is really impressive, especially when you realize that it is built from a single piece of sandstone. This material not only gives the monument its considerable hardness and resistance, but also gives it a unique texture that changes alternately by light. Notice on the pillar of various religious reliefs - The painful Virgin Mary and the Heart of the Lord are preserved here with great care, which gives the whole monument a profound meaning.

Krucifix was officially registered as a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic in 1958. This not only confirms its historical and artistic value, but also ensures that we can also use this memory for our future generations.

In 2017, crucifix underwent total restoration. This process not only restored its original appearance, but also strengthened its structure against damage to time and weather conditions. This allows you to enjoy crucifix today in the same form as it was over two centuries ago.

The interesting thing is that even though the creators and other historical figures associated with its creation are still unknown, crucifix in the Hylvates takes the key place in the local cultural heritage. It's a testament to faith and artistic taste of past generations.

Let's take a look at the neighborhood now. The chapel of Saint Anne, before which there is a crucifix, is a monumental work in itself. Its ground plan and architecture are an excellent example of classical style, which underlines even more the importance of crucifix as part of the whole complex.

Now that you've seen the crucifix and its surroundings, I can invite you to explore the Hylvatek. The city offers many attractions, from historic buildings to natural beauty, waiting for discovery.

Thank you for your attention and I hope you have managed to find out something new about this classical work. Whether you extend your tour to other parts of the city or return to this monument again, I wish you a nice day and comfortable discovery!

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the crucifix at St. Anne's Chapel in the Hylvats is an early spring or late autumn day when the sun is milder and shading friendly for long exposure. This time of year also offers a quieter environment without a lot of tourists.

It is appropriate to use both a private car and public transport to reach the place.

When planning a visit it is good to take with you a protective umbrella, camera and in winter warm clothes. Photography of the crucifix will be the most successful from the side where the sun is behind you, allowing the selected light effect.

In the vicinity of St. Anne's Chapel in Hylvatech there is an equally interesting chapel, which can be visited after a visit to the crucifix. For families with children it is advisable to consider visiting the surrounding natural areas where children can play and enjoy the outdoor environment.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings a particularly calm atmosphere to the surroundings of the church in Hylvatech, when nature is awakening around the monument. Young leaves on trees and flowering meadows create a fine, fresh contrast to the dark material of the cross, highlighting its sculpture details. Light is usually softer and less sharp at this time, which is ideal for observing the texture of stone or metal without disturbing shadows. For visitors this period is suitable for slow walks and reflection, because temperatures are already pleasant, but still cold wounds require laminated clothing. We recommend to wear a light jacket and comfortable shoes because the roads around the church can be slippery after the rains. The best time is in the morning, when the air is purest and light illuminates the whole scenery evenly without extreme contrasts.

Summer offers the longest days and brightest light that reveals all the details of the crucifix in its full glory. Green vegetation around the church is in full bloom and creates a dense, cooling background. Since it is an object in the public space, the summer visit is affected by higher temperatures which may be unpleasant in the morning. Therefore it is ideal to visit the memory either early in the morning, when the air is colder and light soft, or late in the afternoon, when the sun boils to the west and creates dramatic shadows. Clothes should be light and breathable, suitable for higher temperatures, and don't forget the sun protection. Nature around the church in summer is the most lively, with the singing of birds and noise of leaves, which adds to the meditative character of the place.

Autumn brings warm, golden and red leaves to the countryside around Hylvat, creating a wonderful framework for the historical monument. The light at this time of the year is lower and warmer, which gives the scene melancholy and amazing depth. The atmosphere is quieter because the summer tourist season has already receded, and visitors can experience a place in private. The temperatures are falling, the wounds are often covered with fog, which can partially cover up the details of the monument, but at the same time gives it a mystical effect. For clothing are suitable layered combinations, including sweaters and wind-resistant jackets, because autumn weather is usually variable. The best time is a late afternoon, when the sun hides behind the horizon and the shadows extend, allowing to capture the monument in a dramatic light.

Winter brings a quiet, white landscape around the church in Hylvatech that contrasts with the dark colour of crucifix. Snow covering the country and trees creates a clean, minimalist background that attracts attention exclusively to the monument itself. The light is sharp and white in winter, which well reveals the shapes and lines of sculptures, but can also be dazzling. The atmosphere is cold and quiet, ideal for deep reflection and relaxation from the everyday rush. Clothes must be warm and laminated, including winter jackets, gloves and hats, as outdoor temperatures are low and the wind can be penetrating. The best time is in the morning, when the snow is the purest and brightest, but watch the late afternoon hours, when the sun hides and the landscape gets a blue, calm breath.
