Kurovice Fortress
Kurovicka fortress in the district Kroměříž is an original medieval aristocratic mansion whose architecture combines elements of the exhibition fortress and chateau. The monument was created in the 13th century, but the oldest brick parts come from the first half of the 15th century. The history of the building is full of changes in ownership and building modifications that reflect its importance in Czech history.
The fortress was first mentioned in 1275 as the plains of Olomouc bishops. This figure confirms its strategic and political importance at the time. In 1423-1424 it was destroyed by the Hussites, indicating the involvement of the construction in the conflicts at the time. It subsequently underwent significant development for holders of the Vrchlabské family. They restored it and rebuilt it between the 1990s and the mid-16th century. From this time there are preserved stonework elements and fine vaults, which are still interested in experts and visitors.
The key owner was Jáchym Zoubek from Zdomín. In the second half of the 16th century he took over the fortress from Vrchlabský and further influenced its shape. His coat of arms with the inscription "JOACHIM ZVB FROM ZDIETINA AND THE MOSSIENIC COMORNIK MENSSI ETC." is placed as a terminal in one of the vaults and forms a valuable historical detail. The latest major modifications were made by Václav Eusebius Lobkovic. He had the last floor built up, which destroyed a separate tower, which previously formed a dominant building.
The architecture of the fortress characterizes the Gothic core with stoneware elements and noble vaults. It is a two-storey building from the quarry wall on the ground plan U. It has a valb roof covered with bimonas and a high-level closed courtyard. The core consists of three wings; The front is a five-axis and side three-axis, with irregular rectangular windows. A cordon ledge separates between the floors. The rooms on the ground floor are encapsulated with a vaulted arch with a section, while on the first floor there are sacral and rib vaults.
The interior is decorated with sandstone portals of entrances and window lining from the 15th and 16th centuries. During repairs, Hebrew inscriptions from 1656 were discovered, which add another historical dimension to the construction. Albrecht of Valdštejn visited the fort. After Prague's defenestration, Ladislav of Lobkovic met here secretly because his presence at the chateau in Holešov would be too conspicuous.
In the 20th century, the fort served as an apartment building. In 1988, the Museum of Kroměřížska started a total reconstruction, but it was interrupted in 1990. In 2006, the property of the Zlín Region was transferred to private property.
Today the Kurovická fortress is not only a cultural monument, but also a place full of history and architectural gems. Its importance for Czech culture is indisputable. It's worth visiting her and learning more about her rich past and beauty.

Welcome to Kurovice! You stand before the historic fortress that awaits you with the mystery and beauty of the Middle Ages. Look up at her solid 15th-century wall structures telling the story of the past. This fortress is originally a medieval aristocratic mansion which boasts the distinction between the exhibition fort and the chateau in the village of the same name.
Let's dive into her history. The first written mention of Kurovice dates back to 1275, when the fort was referred to as the plains of Olomouc bishops. The fortress passed through many building phases and persisted through the stormy times of Hussite wars. In 1423, the Hussites were destroyed, but already in the next decade, the restoration under the leadership of the Vrchlabska family started, which contributed to its present appearance.
Note the architecture that combines the elements of the exhibition fort and chateau. If you look at the facade, you will see Jáchyma Zoubek's coat of arms from Zdětín as a terminal with one of the many personalities that affected the fortress. The vaults also contain Hebrew inscriptions from 1656, discovered during subsequent repairs, adding another layer of history.
The key moment in her history was to visit Albrecht of Valdštejn after Prague's defenestration. The fortress had the honour of witnessing important events and personalities.
Now pay attention to the interesting thing that the fortress hides: destruction of the Hussite in 1423-1424. This story reminds us of the stormy history of the region and the resilience of this place.
By inviting you to explore these historic places again, we encourage you to look at the surrounding landscape and imagine life here in the past. We hope your visit to Kurovic was interesting to you. Thank you for your attention and we hope you will return!

The best time to visit is late afternoon hours, when the low sun will best highlight the details of walled structures from the fifteenth century. During the tour we recommend the shoes suitable for the field to make the walk comfortable. For photographers are the most interesting views of the remains of the medieval mansion, which in natural light is very atmospheric. Seasonal recommendations
In spring, the fortress in Kurovice wakes up with nature. The trees are beginning to bloom around the walls and the surrounding vegetation has a fresh green colour. The lighting is delicate and unsharp during this period, which creates a pleasant atmosphere to observe the details of architecture. We recommend taking layered clothes because morning cold can be accompanied by sudden rain. Visit the site in the morning, when there are still minimal crowds of visitors.
Summer months bring the most light and longest days to the surroundings, allowing you to explore the memory until late evenings. The atmosphere is alive and full of energy, but it can also be very hot. Due to the higher number of people in the high summer season, it is best to arrive immediately after opening so that you enjoy your peace. Don't forget the protective headgear, enough drinking water and light, breathable clothes.
Autumn season is ideal for Kurovice for lovers of colorful landscape changes. The golden and brown shades of leaves around the fortress create an unforgettable set, which is suburb in the morning mist. It is advisable to prepare firmer shoes, because the damp paths can be slippery. The best time to visit is in the afternoon when the sun shines low and highlights the structure of historical walls.
In winter, the fortress is very majestic and peaceful, especially if the landscape is covered with snow or freezing. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxing, which allows a deeper perception of history without disturbing influences. Due to lower temperatures, bring a very warm dress and scarf.
