lázeňský dům Quisisana Building
The Quisisana Spa House is a historic building in Karlovy Vary (Mariánskolázská 298 / 3), which was built in 1887-1888 by Anton Pupp. Today it serves as a hotel depandance of Grandhotel Pupp and is registered as a cultural monument. The construction represents one of the most important architectural elements of the city from the time of its greatest flourishment.
The building was created to order Anton Puppa, who built it for his wife Maria. The author of the project was probably architect Alfred Bayer. The house was originally designed for family housing, but at the same time it worked as a depandance of Grandhotel Pupp. Rooms were rented at the same prices as in the main hotel building. The creation of the building was closely related to the Golden Age of Karlovy Vary and to the development of history in Europe.
This structure of late historism is opposite the Grandhotel Pupp on the other side of the Teplá River. Its street facade is eight-axis and stands out in four floors with convex blown balconies. The entry on the right is flanked by two Atlantic. They and the other couple on the other side support the double-deck bay. The ground floor is glazed and has parapet balustres. The first and second floors have a storey and breast ledge. The windows of the arches are decorated with rustic champagne, while in the outermost axes there are pilaster windows with a triangular front and a stick. The lodgers carry three columns with volute heads and banister with balustrade. The parapets of the arches decorate the festons. The third floor has balconies with pilasters and cast iron railing, which is repeated at the ship. The Mansard floor contains an ongoing ship in the middle. In the penultimate axes there are separate lodges with a combined window and triangular shield, in the outermost axes there are mandarins with pilaster window frames. The whole floor is supplemented by cast iron railing and both bay tops towers with the name of the building. The layout consists of three parts with a central corridor, a staircase in the rear wing and a wing facing the east courtyard.
In 1924 Karl Pupp became the owner and subsequently Leo Pupp together with Emmy's wife, the daughter of the owner of the Postal Court. Leo Pupp adapted and modernized the building in 1929-1930. Later the house was owned by Theodor Pupp and subsequently inherited by Emmy Puppová. During World War II, Quisisana served as a hospital for wounded German soldiers. After the war, Emma Pupp's construction was confiscated and she and her daughters were relegated. The property was to be taken over by the national administrator Otakar Kadleček, but the building was first occupied by the Red Army, which released it only in 1947.
Since 1947 the house has been managed by Czechoslovak hotels, since 1950 the Ministry of Health and since the end of 1960 the City National Committee Karlovy Vary. The local economy company then transferred the building to the residential house. At the beginning of the new millennium, the tenants were evicted. In 2005, the house, attacked by mold and wood marrow, was offered for sale. Under unclear auction conditions, the object was sold and underwent a complete repair in 2011. The reconstruction design was prepared by architect Alexander Mikoláš with the participation of Peter Holan, Ota Kasparovský and Michal Švec.
Currently, the building is operated as a depandance of the Grandhotel Pupp, although it is registered in the cadastre as an object for living in the property of Exklusive-apartments s.r.o. The monument has been protected since 1958 or 1981, respectively.
The Quisisana Spa House presents a unique example of the architecture of its time and proof of the rich history of Karlovy Vary hotel industry. It is worth a visit mainly because of the details of the historical facade.
