The Split Spa House, formerly known as Stadt Bremen, is a historic monument located in the centre of the spa part of Karlovy Vary at the address of the street Trzni no 388 / 43. This four-storey house in the style of northern Neo-Renaissance with baroque elements was built in 1896-1897 and is part of the urban monument zone. Its historical importance lies not only in its architectural design, but also in its location in the spa centre of Karlovy Vary.

The first mention of the house dates back to 1759, when the city was hit by a devastating fire and the house burned down along with many other buildings. It was restored by Regina Raab under the name Haus Weinberg. In 1835, the house was called Stadt Lübeck. In 1892 a construction regulatory plan was drawn up which proposed a new orientation of the building perpendicular to the street. In 1896-1897, the owner, Dr August Herrmann, had a new house built in a neo-Renaissance style called Stadt Bremen. The likely architect of the project was Karlovy Vary native Alfred Bayer.

The House Split is a towering building with a residential attic, whose facade is irregularly four-axis. The left part in the width of one window axis is gently risalita. On the ground floor, on the third window axis from the left, there is an arch entrance with a vault and fastening, three other windows are similar to the arc. The wall is rustic here, between the ground floor and the first floor there are complete continuous deposits. On the first floor, the windows are oblong, there is a balcony with a walled railing at the window above the entrance. The walls are partially fastened and partly made of brick.

On the second and third floors there is a triangular bay on the third axis from the left, always with three rectangular windows on each floor. On the second floor, the side windows of the bay have a straight ledge and a central window of the ledge with a triangular front. On the third floor are the windows of all windows with flat archives. The other windows of the second floor of the facade have a triangular front, along the left outer window is a rectangular balcony on the consoles with the same lattice as the balcony above the entrance. The windows of the third floor of the facade are with a flat archive.

The facade of the third floor grows fluently without a crown ledge into a volute shield. The right larger shield has three vertices of a triangular front, the left smaller shield is with one triangular front. From the second floor up, the facade wall is in a concrete brick and the roof is bag. A stone terrace with stairs to the street and a stone railing is built in front of the ground floor in the whole width of the house.

The Split House has undergone several changes in ownership. In 1892, the house was owned by Dr. August Herrmann, who had a new building built. In 1991 the house was declared a cultural monument and is now operated as a hotel under the name Esther. The owner is Hotel Ester s. r. o.

The important events in the history of the house are the fire from 1759, which destroyed the house, and its subsequent restoration under the new name Haus Weinberg. In 1835 the house became Stadt Lübeck and in 1896-1897 it was rebuilt into a neo-Renaissance style like Stadt Bremen.

Today the lázeňský dům Split is not only a cultural monument, but also a functional hotel that offers hospitality in the historic environment. Its architectural beauty and rich history make it an interesting destination for visitors to Karlovy Vary who want to know the local heritage. Visiting this house is an opportunity to appreciate not only the beauty of the spa centre, but also the deep history and architectural talent reflected in it.

Welcome to the spa area of Karlovy Vary. You're standing in front of a beautiful building we now know as lázeňský dům Split. Raise your head and look at this impressive work, which, with its presence, completes the unique atmosphere of the entire city centre. It is a four-storey building whose facade and overall appearance immediately attract your attention with their sophisticated features. You are in a place where rich history mingles with traditional spa peace.

Let us now look deeper into the past and explore how this building was created and what it had to overcome over the centuries. The original roots of this place go deep into the past. The first written mention of the house that used to be here takes us to 17 hundred and fifty-nine. At that time, a great disaster hit this area in the form of a devastating fire that completely destroyed the house. But there was no desolate place. Subsequently, the reconstruction took place and a new object grew on the ashes, which people knew at the time under the name of the Vinice house. Time passed, and with it the names and resemblance of this place changed. In the year eighteen hundred thirty-five, the building carried a new label, namely the house of Lübeck.

A significant landmark in modern history occurred at the end of the nineteenth century. In eighteen hundred and ninety-two, a new construction regulatory plan was established, whose task was to completely change the orientation of the construction. On the basis of these plans, between eighteen hundred ninety-six and eighteen hundred ninety-seven, a whole new form of the house grew, this time under the name of Bremen City. The famous builder and creator of Alfred Bayer took care of the overall form. We owe it to him that today we can admire a construction that bears the unmistakable features of the Nordic Neo-Renaissance, to which the creator has skilfully added baroque elements. These two styles are bound here in a harmonious whole that you can observe right in front of you.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself. Notice how the building is divided into four floors. Each floor contributes to the overall balance and monumentality of the building, which is firmly embedded in the historical building of the centre. When you follow the facade lines, you will see precise work with details that are typical of the neo-Renaissance concept of the Nordic spirit, supplemented by subtle baroque ideas. The house looks firm, noble and confident. Just the way the spa house in the heart of the world-famous city looks and belongs.

When we think about the stories that relate to this place, we have to say that the specific human destinies of the famous figures that would stay here have not been preserved in the springs as significantly as the construction history itself. But the story of the building itself is all the more powerful. The house survived fires, name changes, reconstructions, and adapted to the needs of its time. He witnessed the transformation of Karlovy Vary from the traditional residence into a modern European spa, where the elite from all over the world went.

The interesting thing that points to the uniqueness of this place is the fact that the house has had an incredibly driven development. From the fire in the eighteenth century to the gradual change of names to the great transformation at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its importance has not gone unnoticed even in modern history. In nineteen hundred ninety-one, this building was officially declared a state-protected cultural monument. The state has confirmed what you see with your own eyes now, that it is an architectural and historical jewel that we must protect for generations to come. Today, of course, the house is a solid part of the urban monument zone, which underlines its exceptional position throughout the city.

I hope you enjoyed today's stop at the Split Spa House and that you enjoyed this remarkable display of historical construction. But Karlovy Vary has many more treasures to hide. When you take another walk through the streets, note the details of the houses around you, because each one tells its own story. Thank you for your attention, I wish you a wonderful rest of your stay in Karlovy Vary and see you at other sights.

Tips for visitors

Best time to visit the spa house Split is early in the morning or early in the morning, when the historical centre is quieter and the sunlight beautifully highlights Nordic neo-Renaissance architecture and baroque elements of this four-storey building.

For transportation to the centre of Karlovy Vary you can use your own car or local public transport, and we recommend that you check the current connection and parking possibilities in advance in the official connection search engine.

Take with you a walk through the spa area comfortable footwear for walking on the pavement, a bottle of mineral springs and a camera to capture the unique details of the exterior of the building.

For the best photographic shots of the spa house, stand on the opposite side of the street, where the view of the entire facade is great, and the best light for photography is in the morning when the sun radiates the front of the building.

Since there are no other specific sites in the immediate vicinity of the monument, we recommend focusing on exploring the entire historical spa district and its colonnades.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring in Karlovy Vary brings awakening nature, when surrounding forest slopes around the Split spa house change color from brown to fresh green. The sun's rays are starting to warm up and the morning fog above the river creates a unique light game for photographers, while the atmosphere is calm and the air smells of wet soil. In this period you will meet few tourists, therefore you can use layered clothes, fixed shoes to walk on the waking sides and the best time to visit is in the morning when the spa promenades are still alive.

Summer opens the main visiting season, where the historic building is surrounded by fully foliage trees and the sharp noon sun radiates its architectural details. The atmosphere is very lively, full of international excitement, but also a wave of heat that hangs in the valley of the river. Due to the large crowds of tourists it is necessary to get up and visit the memory right after the morning opening, it is recommended that light breathable clothes, sunglasses and a bottle with fresh spring water for hydration throughout the day.

Autumn turns the surroundings of the spa house into a colorful palette of yellow, red and brown shades that contradict the colder, low-lying sun. The light is soft and creates a melancholy but very soothing mood ideal for contemplation and peaceful admiration of the facade. Visitors are shrinking, so you can get along with a warm coat, scarf and waterproof shoe, and the best time for the tour is early afternoon when the temperature reaches its daily maximum.

Winter covers the Karlovy Vary into silence, sometimes under the snow cover, and early dimming makes warm artificial lighting stand out in the windows of Split building. The atmosphere is fairy tale and chamber, without the excitement of mass tourism, but requires preparation for cold weather. The need is a quality winter jacket, hat, gloves and firm non-slip shoes due to freezing pavements, and because of shorter daylight it is best to go out around noon when it is the hottest outside.
