The Lběbín Pavilion on Karlovy Vary Street in the Pilsen part of Severní Předměstí is an empir building from 1833. Originally there were bath baths. The building has been registered as a cultural monument since 1963 and represents an important remnant of the former Lobbíin Spa.

The foundation of the building is connected with the initiative of Plzeň purkmaster Martin Kopecký, who was the main supporter of the idea of building a spa complex. Although the doctor Bernard Říha already knew the healing effects of the spring in Lambětin Park in 1740-1794, the implementation of the spa took place only in the 1930s. In 1832 Kopecký founded a stock decorating company through which he bought the necessary land. The hall itself was built in 1833 and the spa officially opened in 1834. For procedures, peat was imported into the building from the painful forests, and the connection with the city was provided by a stage line.

Architecturally, it is a stand-alone Empire-style building, probably created by František Filous. The building consists of a central part and two adjacent wings. Each of these parts has five window axes and a valb roof. The centre exceeds the wings; Her facade is decorated with Pilasters with Tuscan headers, which carry a thunderous lay and a ledge supported by prismatic consoles. High windows with semi-circular ends and blinds are placed among pilastrys. The interior of the central part consists of a large flat-ceiling hall with fabiums. Inputs on the south and north side have a semi-circular skylight with a wooden glazed grid in Empire style. Side wings are profiled with lisen frames and have rectangular windows with blinds. In addition, the north side is supplemented by flat sides and radiated above-lights. There were originally five cabins for treatment procedures in each of these routes.

The property has changed over the years. After the stock decorating company the spa was bought in 1849 by the town brewery in Pilsen. He greatly expanded the spa park from the original 5 to 71.2 hectares and employed his own gardener for his care. For the brewery the complex was a lucrative place to sell beer. After 1945, the enterprise was nationalized.

The fate of the building was very variable in the 20th century. After the abolition of the spa operation the pavilion served as Hall of Friendship. In 1919, Košutka was lent to the physical unit for the needs of the gym and in the 1960s the workshops of the national company Production were located there. Despite the plans to adapt the object to the museum space, this did not happen. In 1983, a devastating fire hit the building. After repairs it was opened again on March 9, 1988 under the patronage of the Park of Culture and rest where it served for cultural events and concerts of the Circle of Music Friends. After the Velvet Revolution, the pavilion turned into a nightclub.

The renewal of the monument took place between 2007 and 2015, when the remaining spa facilities were returned to the original form. Currently, the pavilion is led as a religious place by the Roman Catholic parish of Pilsen-North suburb. There is still a 1989 concrete terrace in front of the north front, which violates the historical concept. In 2024, a further revitalisation of approximately CZK 40 million was decided. This is intended to include removal of the terrace and reconstruction of the interior. Future use is still under discussion; Variations in the exposure of the water world to the Pilsen Zoo or a multifunctional cultural centre with a reminder of Bedřich Smetana are considered.

The Lběbín Pavilion is a unique testimony about the development of balneology in Pilsen and an example of Empire architecture. His visit offers insight into the history of urban rest and healing in the heart of the Lobbýin Park.

Welcome, distinguished visitors. Please stop for a moment and take a breath. You're standing in front of a building that is a silent witness to over a hundred and fifty years of Pilsen history. In front of you is the Lobhodinian Pavilion, a building that tells the story of health search, social life and incredible ability to adapt to times. If you look at it now, you may see only a beautiful historical building in it, but behind its walls is a fascinating journey from luxury spa baths to night club.

Let's go back many years together, namely by the year one thousand eight hundred thirty-three. It was this year that this building was built. At that time in Pilsen, the Lběbín Spa was developing and this pavilion was their heart. It was designed to serve for bath baths. So imagine that at a time when the city was much smaller and quieter, people from around here and from far away came to find relief from their diseases in hot vans and to clear their minds and bodies. The whole project was worth the builder František Filous, who put the modern aesthetics of his time into the building.

Now pay attention to the very form of the building you see before you. Notice its arrangement. The architecture is based on a central hall from which two adjacent wings extend to the sides. This schedule was not only an aesthetic decision, but it should have been functional in order to move efficiently in the building and to allow patients to have access to the necessary procedures. Look at the overall composition of the facade and feel the atmosphere of the place. It is a building that emits peace and stability, which was absolutely essential for spa operations. Since the year one thousand nine hundred sixty-three, this object has been registered as a cultural monument, confirming its invaluable value for the entire North Suburb region.

But the history of this place is much more varied than just therapeutic baths. The building has changed its face many times over the decades. It's fascinating to think about how energy changed here. After its beginning as a spa came the time for sport and healthy movement. In the year one thousand nine hundred nineteen, the building was lent to the body unity of Košutka. Instead of quiet and relaxing in the spa vans, the voices of athletes and the sound of exercise in the gym started to ring. The building became a centre of vitality in a different way than it was originally intended to be.

In addition to sports there were workshops at different times, where people were engaged in craft work, and in later years the building turned into a place of social activity as a night club. It's an incredible contrast when we realize that in an area where healing procedures were used in total peace, people danced later and enjoyed music. In connection with the building, names of personalities such as Martin Kopecký, Bernard Říha or Ladislav Lábek appear in history who have been associated with this place or its surroundings by their activities or influence.

Now, I want to take you to one of the most interesting facts that ties to this pavilion. Try to imagine how in the year one thousand eight hundred thirty-three they got into the active substance building. For procedures, peat was imported from the painful forests. Not just ordinary cars, but a special stage line. Imagine the modern technical system that transported peat directly to the building so it could be used to treat patients. It's a detail that shows us how ambitious and technologically advanced these baths were.

Another interesting thing is the influence of local business on the development of this whole. In the year one thousand eight hundred forty-nine, the town brewery in Pilsen bought a spa. You may be surprised that the brewing business and the spa went hand in hand. Thanks to this purchase there was a huge expansion of the spa park. Originally, the park had an area of only five hectares, but after the brewery hit, it increased to more than seventy-one hectares. This made the spa a real resort for outdoor rest, which was accompanied by this very building.

Of course, the path of this pavilion was not without obstacles. The building suffered a serious fire during its existence. However, in the year one thousand nine hundred and eighty eight, the building was reopened under the patronage of the Park of Culture and rest, which breathed her new life. The highlight of the newer era was the completion of the reconstruction of the remaining spa facilities in the year two thousand fifteen, when it returned to its original form, which you can admire right now.

When you look at this pavilion today, you see more than just walls and a roof. You see the symbol of Pilsen endurance and transformation. From peat medicine to sports enthusiasm to cultural memory that survived fire and regime changes. It's a place where health, sport and social life meet.

I suggest you now slowly rewind the building around, perceive its proportions, and try to imagine the violence that existed here in different centuries. Whether you felt the smell of peat, heard the impact of the balls in the gym or the music from the nightclub, it's up to your imagination.

Thank you for taking a walk in the history of the Lběbín pavilion. I hope you are interested in this story and that you will take away some of the atmosphere of this unique place. I will now invite you to further explore the surroundings of North Suburbia and discover other hidden treasures of our city. I wish you a pleasant rest of the day and a wonderful experience on your next discovery. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is spring or autumn, when the colors of the surrounding nature are the most distinctive and the building in summer is not covered with thick leaves. Transport to the North Suburb can be solved by means of a search engine that offers you a current connection by public transport or by car.

To visit we recommend to take comfortable shoes suitable for walking in the park and plenty of water. Since the building is in reconstruction, we recommend to be careful near the construction site.

For best photos, use the morning or late afternoon light to highlight the details of the Empire facade. Ideal angles for images are from paths leading to the pavilion that capture the building in the context of green.

The surrounding area offers great opportunities for leisure time. At a short distance you can visit the Lobbýin Park or the animal in Pilsen. For families with children is the ideal combination of walking around the historical pavilion and subsequent visits of the animal.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, the surroundings wake to life and the young greenery in North The suburb creates a fresh set to view the building. The light is fine and natural, which helps to observe the facade detail. We recommend shoes suitable for wet soil and visit in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

Summer brings intense sun and high temperatures that highlight the colors of nearby parks. The atmosphere is hot and full of life, taking the best time to walk is early morning or late evening to avoid heat. It is necessary to have light clothes and plenty of water with you.

In autumn, the landscape is colored in gold and brown tones, which gives the place a melancholy touch. Lighting is soft and golden, ideal for outdoor photography. Due to frequent collisions and colder winds, it is advisable to choose a waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes.

Zimą is in the area of peace and emptiness, which underlines the very appearance of the building. If it attacks the snow, the surroundings get a clean and white look, while short days mean a quick change of pace. Hot clothing, clothing layering and quality hats are essential for staying in the exterior.
