Loretánská kaple na Viničném vrchu u Žitenic is a small sacral monument located northwest of the town centre in the district of Litomerice. Its history and architectural transformation have made it remarkable, leading to its inclusion in the list of protected cultural monuments since 1964.

The chapel was probably built in the second half of the 17th century in the possession of the Vysehrad chapter, which corresponded to the period of flowering Baroque architecture and art in Bohemia and Europe. In the 18th century, the reforms of Joseph II, aimed at modernising the Roman Catholic Church, led to the abolition of some smaller sacral structures. Even though the Lorethan Chapel was abolished in 1785, it was not destroyed.

At the beginning of the 19th century, there was a conversion of the Empire observation pavilion, reflecting changes in cultural and aesthetic preferences of the time. In 1908, the chapel was transformed into a Lurd chapel with the wall of the original arcades and the construction of a neo-Baroque shield.

Architecturally, the chapel is interesting in its several phases. Originally, on the south side, it had two brick fields of the original arcades which were demolished around 1800 and later re-walled in 1908. The chapel now has two windows on the south wall and an entrance located on the east side facing the village.

After its abolition the ownership of the chapel has not changed, but the reconstruction reflects changes in the function and importance of the building. The chapel underwent several architectural transformations that reflected historical and cultural changes in the region.

Today, the Loretan Chapel is a protected cultural monument offering visitors the opportunity to explore its rich history and architecture. The location on the Winery Hill provides beautiful views and represents a unique history of the area.

The Lorethian Chapel is witnessing many historical phases that reflect the cultural and religious development of the region. It's a meeting place of different architectural styles and history, which makes it interesting for everyone in love with history and architecture. Visiting this chapel is an opportunity to appreciate the rich cultural heritage area and to understand the changes that have taken place over the centuries.

Welcome here, on Vineyard Hill, at the Žitenice. Stop for a moment, take a breath and feel the peace and quiet of this place. You're standing in front of the Lorethian Chapel, a small sacral structure that carries a layer of centuries of history. Look at her. It is a building site that does not act monumentally, but by its presence here northwest of the centre of the village it is an irreplaceable point in the landscape. It's a place where faith, history and nature meet. Feel the atmosphere of this hill, which has probably served for centuries as a place of reefs from everyday hustle and bustle and space for deep thinking.

Let us now return together in time to understand how this form of chapel came to be. It's probably from the second half of the seventeenth century. So imagine a time when this landscape was completely different, where people were moving around in different clothes and with a different view of the world. At that time, the chapel was a manifestation of deep godliness and desire to create a sacred space near homes and workplaces, in this case probably near vineyards. The chapel was built as a place of prayer and oppression where one could find inner peace.

However, the history of this construction was not simple and linear. Like many other sacral buildings in our regions, this chapel had to face the waves of political and social change. At the time of the so-called Yosephin reforms, which led to a great deal of intervention in the church order and closed many monasteries and smaller chapels, this building was also abolished. That was the moment when it could completely disappear, be demolished or forgotten. But fate had other plans for her.

Now pay attention to how the building was changing in time. In the early nineteenth century there was a very interesting change. The chapel ceased to be a purely religious space at the time and was transformed into a sightseeing pavilion in Empire style. Imagine that at that time people didn't come here primarily to pray, but to admire the beauty of the surrounding landscape from the elevated point of the Winery Hill. The Empire style brought some clarity and elegance into architecture, which was to match the idea of human harmony and nature. This change in function shows how flexibly space could adapt to the needs of time.

Interestingly, this journey from religious space to recreational pavilion was not the ultimate goal. History has closed in a sense. In the year nine hundred and eight, the chapel was transformed again, this time into a Lurd chapel. The Lourdes Chapel is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and often serves as a place of deep personal faith and hope for healing. Note that the construction regained its sacral character, although not in the seventeenth century. This transformation in the year nine hundred and eight meant a return to the original spirit of the place, to prayer and silence.

Now, if you look at the construction itself, notice its total size and location. Even though we don't know the names of the particular architects who designed it or rebuilt it, their work speaks for them. Look at the facade and see how the different ages are mixed in. It's fascinating when you realize that the walls you see also remember the baroque times, the empirical elegance and the lurdian godliness of the early twentieth century. Each of these layers has left a mark, although some of them may be hidden or stealth today.

Key stories of this place are not written in chronicles of names of specific personalities, but in the very survival of the building. It's a story about resistance. About how a small structure managed to survive the abolition, the change of purpose and the advancing decades. It's a story about the people of the Rim and its surroundings who took care of this place, who loved it and who wanted it to be preserved for future generations. It is because of them that we can stand before this monument today.

One of the most interesting things is the fact that since the year nine hundred and sixty-four, the Loretan Chapel has been protected as a real cultural monument. This means that the state recognised its irreplaceable value not only for the local population but for the whole culture. It is a recognition that even a small object can be of great importance if it carries such rich historical development.

Now, try to think for a moment about the mystery this chapel has in it. How many people have come here in 300 years? How many silent pleas were expressed here in the seventeenth century, how many romantic views of the landscape were offered in the nineteenth century and how many hopes were placed in the Lurdes' prayers in the year nine hundred and eight? This chapel is like a silent witness who saw generations coming and going, while he himself patiently stood on top and adapted to new times.

Now I invite you to take a slow walk around the building. Feel how light changes on her walls and how from different angles her silhouette appears against the sky. Let yourself be filled with the room that radiates this place. This is an ideal moment for you to disconnect for a moment from modernity and connect with the history that is tangible here in every stone.

The Loretan Chapel on Vineyard Hill is proof that beauty may not be in size, but in story and authenticity. It's a small piece of history that survived a storm of time and today offers us a place to stop.

Thank you for spending a moment with us at this beautiful monument. It is now up to you to stay here for a while, or to explore other corners of the surrounding landscape and history of Zitenice. We wish you a pleasant continuation of your discovery and the hope that this place has restored and inspired you. Goodbye.
