Počátky loutkářské činnosti v Lounech sahají do roku 1903, kdy Jan Tregler a další nadšenci odehráli na sokolských slavnostech hru "Posvícení v Hudlicích".

Objekt prošel několika rekonstrukcemi, z nichž jedna proběhla v letech 1998–1999 díky financování města Louny a druhá v roce 2004, kdy bylo jeviště opraveno díky příspěvku Nadace Duhová energie.

Po válce došlo k generaci výměně a tvorbě nových loutek i vlastních her.

Loutkové divadlo v Lounech představuje unikátní spojení historie, kultury a politických dějin.

Welcome to Louny, a town that preserves many hidden treasures. You are currently standing before a building that may seem unassuming at first glance, but for lovers of culture and history, it is an absolutely unique place. Look ahead at the facade of this house. This is the Loutkové divadlo Louny. You may be wondering why this building is so exceptional. The answer is simple, yet amazing. You are standing before the oldest permanent puppet theater in the entire Czech Republic and, most likely, in all of Europe. Imagine that—across our entire continent, this place is probably the first where puppets found their permanent home in the form of a separate building.

Let us now travel back in time together to understand how this miracle came to be. Puppetry in Louny did not begin only with the construction of this house. The roots of this passion reach much deeper, specifically back to 1903. It was in this year that a play titled Posvícení v Hudlicích was performed in Louny. At the time, it was likely just a one-time experience, but it struck the local residents so deeply that a true love for puppet art was born. This passion grew gradually and led people to feel the need to establish a separate Puppeteers' Association. They wanted a place where their creativity could flourish, where puppets could meet audiences every day, and not just occasionally.

This effort culminated in 1920, when this building was constructed. It was a period full of hope and the building of a new identity. The puppet theater was not intended solely as entertainment for the youngest. Although we often associate puppets with childhood, performances here were for all generations. The theater served as a meeting place where adults could laugh, but also reflect on life. Puppets possess a special power to speak truths that human actors might sometimes struggle to express so easily.

Now, as you stand before the building, pay attention to its appearance. Since we do not know the names of the specific architects who designed this house, we must rely on what the building tells us itself. Observe its overall form and feel the atmosphere it radiates. It is a place that combines functionality with an artistic spirit. If you look closely, you will realize that the building grew over the years. In 1951, a new section was added to the original structure. This extension was not intended for the stage itself, but served as social facilities and a club room. This was an important improvement, as the theater was the center of social activity at the time. People did not spend time here only during performances, but also met afterward to discuss the plays and plan future works.

When we think about the history of this place, we cannot overlook the difficult moments the theater endured. During the Second World War, when the atmosphere throughout the country was tense and full of fear, the puppet theater became an unexpected source of strength. Puppets played a role in efforts to encourage audiences, bringing a bit of joy and hope to their hearts at a time when it seemed the world around them was collapsing. It was a quiet but powerful resistance through art, reminding people of their own culture and identity. After the war ended, it was time for renewal. A generational change of puppeteers brought new energy and a new perspective on creativity. New puppets were created, representing a new era and new stories, yet still in the same place, which was already deeply rooted in Louny.

The name Jan Tregler is associated with this place; he left his mark on the history of this theater. Personalities like him helped keep the flame of puppetry in Louny alive even during difficult times. Thanks to their perseverance and love for the craft, we can stand before this building today and admire its history.

Now, I want to share an interesting detail that shows this theater was not only a cultural center but also a place where important social and political issues were addressed. Imagine April 8, 1921. A plenary meeting of the left wing of the local Social Democratic organization was held within the walls of this theater. It is a fascinating thought that within one and the same building, the laughter of children at puppet fairy tales alternated with serious political debates about the future of society. This tells us that the theater in Louny was the true heart of the community, a place where high art met everyday life and political struggle.

As you look at the building, try to imagine all the puppets that have passed through its doors over ten decades. Wooden figures with strings, glove puppets, each with its own character and voice. Each told its own story, and each left a mark on the memories of thousands of spectators. It is fascinating to think that right here, in this small town, a tradition is preserved that is likely the oldest in all of Europe. It is a reminder that great things can arise from the simple passion of a few enthusiasts who decided to create something lasting.

The Loutkové divadlo Louny thus remains a living monument to human creativity and perseverance. From the first performance in 1903, through the construction of a permanent home in 1920, to the expansion in the fifties. All these steps have led to our ability to appreciate this unique place today.

Now that you know the story of this house, I recommend you observe it for a while longer and let your thoughts drift. Feel the silence, which carries the echoes of thousands of rounds of applause and laughter from past decades. The puppet theater teaches us that even small wooden figures can tell great truths, and that even a small building can have global significance.

Thank you for accompanying me on this short journey through the history of puppet art in Louny. I hope this story interested you and that you leave with a sense of respect for this extraordinary place. We now invite you to further explore the beauties of this town. We wish you a pleasant continuation of your journey, and remember to look around you, because Louny has its own unique story hidden in every corner. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the puppet theatre in Louny is during winter and spring when there are usually fewer people and the atmosphere is more relaxed. Additionally, special performances for children take place during these periods.

We recommend checking current connections before setting out.

Bring warm clothing when visiting, especially during winter. Children may also need toys or books to occupy themselves while waiting for the performance.

Photography in the puppet theatre is allowed but respect the rules and requests of the professionals. The best lighting for photos can be found outside on the street or inside areas with good artificial lighting.
