Luteránské gymnázium in Velké Meziríčí is a historical monument which represents a unique Renaissance school building from the 16th century. Located in the village Velké Meziříčí and its origin dates back to the last quarter of this century when it was founded as a Latin Academy. Today it is known not only for its architecture, but also for serving various purposes over the centuries; The Kodet Museum has been hosting since 2020.

The foundation of the Gymnasium was decided in 1576 as part of the wider Reformation movement that took place in Bohemia. This context affected not only the region's religious landscape, but also its cultural and educational institutions. In 1578 Alena Berková-Meziříčská z Lomnice built a gymnasium building in the style of the French Renaissance. This single-storey, rectangular plan structure is the architectural period of Palazzo Pompei in Verona, highlighting its aesthetic and historical value. We attribute the building to an unknown Italian builder who used the technique of sgraffite for decorating facades.

The building served as a high school until 1602 when it was closed. After cancelling school operations, part of the building became a prayer room for the local Lutheran community. In the middle of the 17th century Rudolf z Kounic converted space into a brewery, which worked until 1949. This transformation shows the adaptability of the building in various historical times.

Over the years, ownership and purpose of the building have changed. After the brewery was shut down, it was taken over by the administration of the local community, then the building was used as a prayer hall for the Lutheran community. In the mid-17th century, Rudolf z Kounic turned it into a brewery, which worked until 1949. After World War II, the building went under the administration of the city Velké Meziříčí, where it served various purposes including art school and library. In the mid 1950s, the building was restored, which contributed to preserving its historical value.

Since 2020, Luteránské gymnázium has been the property of the painter Kristian Kodeto, who has created an exhibition of art works for three generations of the Kodeta family here. This transformation shows not only the historical value of the building, but also its current cultural importance.

Today, Luteránské gymnázium is in the Great Mezirice more than just a monument. It's a place where history and the present, art and architecture meet. For visitors it offers a unique view of the past and the presence of the region. Visiting this monument means not only exploring its rich history, but also appreciating the works of art at the Kodet Museum.

Luteránské gymnázium in the Great Mezirice is a reminder of how architectural structures can be transformed and adapted for new purposes over centuries. It is important to realise the value of such monuments not only as historical objects but also as living spaces that can contribute to the cultural and artistic development of society. Visiting this memory is a valuable way to connect with the past and appreciate its influence on the present.
