Mariánská kaple (Císařský) Chapel

Mariánská kaple, also known as Botzenská Kapelle, is a late Baroque chapel located on the slope of Partyzánského vrchu in Císařský, within the Šluknov district of Ústecký kraj. Constructed in 1796 by farmer Josef Mautsch, it was originally dedicated to Mary and served as a site for Marian devotions during local festivals. The chapel is notable not only for its architectural style but also for its historical significance and recent restoration efforts that have preserved this cultural landmark.

The chapel's origins trace back to the late 18th century when Bohemia was part of the Habsburg Monarchy, experiencing significant cultural and religious influences from across Europe. During this period, Baroque architecture continued to flourish in sacred buildings, reflecting the region’s Catholic traditions. Josef Mautsch, a local farmer, commissioned the chapel's construction as a field chapel dedicated to Mary. It was strategically placed along a path connecting Císařský with Velký Šenov, known locally as Botzensteig, which contributed to its initial significance.

Architecturally, Mariánská kaple is characterized by its late Baroque style, featuring an oblong plan with a semi-circular apse. The structure is constructed from sandstone and local limestone, materials commonly used in the region during this period. A distinctive element of the chapel's design is the niche above its entrance, adorned with a statue of the Madonna. Despite lacking windows and having rough, grey plasterwork with smooth white lintel frames, the chapel retains an austere yet elegant appearance. The roof, imitating slate tiles, completes the structure without the addition of a tower.

Ownership and administration of the chapel have seen significant changes over time. Originally built by Josef Mautsch in 1796, it fell into disrepair during the latter half of the 20th century, with only remnants of its walls remaining by the early 21st century. The potential demolition was avoided through a collaborative restoration effort in 2014 involving Drobné památky severních Čech association, the city of Šluknov, and the Via Foundation. Ing. Vojtěch Král led the restoration works, which were completed with a budget of 160,000 Kč, partially funded by the Via Foundation. Since 2017, the chapel has been under the ownership of the city of Šluknov.

Throughout its history, Mariánská kaple has witnessed several key events and curiosities that add to its allure. According to local legend, a child miraculously recovered from an eye disease after visiting the chapel, which contributed to its spiritual significance in the community. Although regular religious services no longer take place, the chapel remains a site of interest due to its historical and architectural value.

Today, Mariánská kaple stands as a testament to both its historical roots and the efforts made to preserve it for future generations. While it is not under heritage protection, its restoration has ensured that visitors can appreciate its late Baroque architecture and the serene environment surrounding it. The chapel is encircled by five large-leaved linden trees, adding to its tranquil ambiance. Although the original path connecting Císařský with Velký Šenov no longer exists, the chapel continues to be a point of interest for those exploring the region.
