Martinický obelisk is an 11-metre monument from the Zhrovic sandstone, built in 1847 in honor of Count Karl Jan Nepomuk Clam-Martinique. It is located in the Jbán Natural Park near the village Smečno in Kladno district in the Central Bohemian Region. This cultural monument has the shape of a slender pillar and is sometimes referred to as a pyramid.

The work was built by the officials of Count Clam-Martinique to pay tribute to their superior.

The sandstone object reaches a height of 11 meters. Originally, this slender column was equipped with four metal plates oriented to the world.

Boards with festive inscriptions were gradually damaged and subsequently stolen. In 2013, however, thanks to the care of Smečna's friends and wider surroundings, he returned them to the monument.

The lyrics on the boards are divided by the world side. The south dedicated the inscription to a man who deserved the kingdom and the king by counsel and deed, in the field and in peace. The East gives the name of Count Karl Clama-Martinique. North mentions his role as a patronage and decoration of patriotic, native Czech branch and tribe. The West then states that in 1847 the memorial was built by faithful servants to honor his excellent merits.

The monument stands at the field road perpendicular to road II / 236 from Kachic to Smečno. It is protected as a cultural object and forms part of the landscape of Jaban Nature Park.

Martinický obelisk represents an important element of local history and testimony to the gratitude of period officials. Visiting this place offers a meeting with the history of the mid-19th century in a quiet environment of the natural park.

Welcome to Smečno, in the beautiful and peaceful environment of Jabán Nature Park. Stop for a moment, take a breath and look straight ahead. You stand before the Martinique obeliskie, who stands out here as a silent witness to history. The first impression of this place is certainly a sense of stability and grandeur. In front of you, there is a tall, slender column that attracts the attention of everyone who passes through with its simplicity and strength. Feel the atmosphere of this place where nature is bound to the human effort to preserve the memory of the important personalities of the past.

Let us now look together at how this monument was created and what its original purpose was. We write to each other in 1847, the time when society was organized very strictly and respect for higher layers was the cornerstone of social intercourse. It was this year that this monument was built. However, this was not the result of the personal wish of the one to whom it was dedicated, but of gratitude and respect. The Obelisk built a group of officials who served Karl Jan Nepomuk Count Clam-Martinique. They wanted to pay tribute to their superior and leave a trail of his work in this area for future generations. It is fascinating to think how much effort and planning must have taken to see such a dominant structure in the mid-nineteenth century.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself and the materials that make up this column. Look up to the very top. The whole building reaches a height of 11 metres, which is a truly impressive height in open terrain. If you approach closer, notice the surface of the stone. The whole monument is carved out of Zhrovic sandstone. This material is known in our regions for its specific texture and colour, which eventually gets patina and fits into the surrounding nature. Notice the shape of this monument. It's a slender column that narrows upwards. That is why we call it obeliskie today, although in some older descriptions or in folk language it is sometimes referred to as a pyramid. This geometric purity of the lines gives the monument a certain timeless character. The architects who proposed this project remained anonymous at times, but their work in the form of this sandstone column lasted more than a century and a half.

The key figure with which this place is connected is Karel Jan Nepomuk, Count Clam- Martinique. Imagine him as the influential nobleman of his time, whose name was synonymous with power and administration in the region. The fact that the memorial was built by his own officials says a lot about relationships at the time. It was not just a formal act, but a symbol of loyalty and recognition. Today, when you stand by this pillar, you are basically standing by the monument of gratitude. Count Clam- Martinique was a man who influenced the lives of many people around Smečno, and this stone is a tangible proof of how he was perceived by his colleagues.

Now, I want to impress you with one story that relates to this place, which brings in both the mystery and the rebirth. If you look at the walls of the obelisk, you'll see metal plates with inscriptions. But these plates are essentially newly returned components of the monument. Originally, there were four such metal plates on the column that bore the glorious words of the Count. Unfortunately, these valuable elements have been stolen over the years. So the monument remained incomplete for a long time, without its texts telling its story. Imagine that feeling of emptiness when his words disappear from the monument. But the story doesn't end sadly here. A significant recovery took place in 2013. Thanks to the tireless care and activities of the Smečna Friends Association and the broad surroundings, these metal plates were returned to their original location. It's a beautiful example of how the local community can come together to save its history and bring back its original face. This reconstruction in 2013 gave the obelisk a new life and ensured that you, too, could read the inscriptions that had been here since 1847.

Now, if you look at the whole Martinický obelisk again, think of it not only as a piece of sandstone, but as a layered story. You see in it the respect of the officers of your 19th century master, you see in it the craftsmanship of unknown builders and you see in it the modern care of the people of Smečna who didn't want their history to disappear. Eleven meters of sandstone, connecting two centuries.

Now that you know the story of this fascinating column, I suggest you slowly look around. The Jaban Natural Park offers many other paths and quiet corners worth exploring. Let yourself be guided by the countryside, feel the roar of leaves and peace that surrounds this place. Perhaps you will be met on your journey with other traces of history waiting to be discovered. Thank you for stopping by the Martinique obelisk. I wish you a pleasant continued walk and many new experiences in discovering the beauty of Smečna and its surroundings. Goodbye.
