Měděná štola is a historic mining work on the Cross Hill, 1.5 kilometers south of the Golden Hor district of Jeseník. This cultural monument of the Czech Republic, for which it was declared in 1994, represents an important piece of medieval mining of copper ores in the Jesenice region.

Historical sources suggest that mining in the site started already in the Middle Ages, through Johann Stol, which is part of today's system of Copper Stones. The acquisition of precious and coloured metals in this region was crucial for the economic development of Silesia and North Moravia. In later periods, namely 1878, the site is documented under the name Fanny.

The original mining in the mine was carried out using a concession shaft and then a stol system. The newly renovated corridor leads in the original terrain wedge and continues with landslide to solid rock. To ensure safety, the spaces are reinforced with wood. The total length of the work is approximately 160 metres, after 90 metres the system branches to other corridors.

During the surveys, historical mine sleepers and fragments of the ore cart were found in the mine, which are now stored in the museum in the Golden Mountains. The main mining material was chalcopyrite.

Today, the Měděná štola is part of the Zlatohora miner's learning path and is adapted for visitors. The building offers an authentic insight into the technology and history of the mining industry, which shaped the shape of the entire region. Visiting this monument is an opportunity to explore the technical past that was at the birth of the prosperity of the Golden Mountain region.

Welcome to the historical memory of Měděná štola, located on the Cross Hill near the Golden Mountains. This is where you will find yourself in front of a fascinating witness to the mining industry's past in this area. Look around, and you'll see how the mound, with its stony walls, stands out from the surrounding terrain as if it was waiting for another story.

The history of this place dates back to the Middle Ages. By the end of 1300, people began to mine copper ore here through a stol they called Johann. This activity was crucial for the region because copper was a very valuable material at the time. In the 19th century the mining continued here and the stol was known as Fanny. Today, Měděná štola is part of the mining learning path, which gives it additional importance as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic declared in 1994.

Let's look at architecture. Měděná štola has a total length of approximately 160 metres, which is an impressive section for this period. After the first 90 meters, the system branches and reveals additional corridors. These corridors are a testament to the technique and skill of the former miners who were able to create such a complex system without modern technology.

Despite the fact that particular historical personalities associated with this site are not known, there are several interesting things you might discover. When you walk through the gallows, you will notice traces of miners' activity: the deep corridors and the trail on the walls are indicative of the hard and dangerous profession that these people have been pursuing. These elements allow you to feel the atmosphere of past times.

It is also interesting that this site was important not only for the economic development of the region, but also as a meeting point and cooperation between people. Copper mining brought wealth here, but also required careful organization and cooperation.

Now that you've been immersed in the history of the Copper Hole, I invite you to explore again. Walk further can reveal even more stories and details. Whether you look at the corridors or notice the sound effect that the stalls produce - each step is part of a big history puzzle.

I hope this guide inspired you and understand why Měděná štola occupies such an important place in the history of this area. Thank you for your attention and I wish you a relaxing exploration of other interesting places on the miner's trail.

Tips for visitors

For visit I recommend a cross hill late spring or early autumn, when the terrain is well-functioning and surrounding forests offer a pleasant climate. Avoid winter months when access to historic mining works can be hampered by snow and ice.

The Golden Hor area can be transported by car or public transport. The paths in the vicinity are of a forest nature, so I recommend following the local signs leading to the educational path.

When exploring the terrain at the historic stacks, take the fixed shoes to the mountains and suitable clothes to nature. Don't forget enough fluids and snacks because you won't find any refreshments in the immediate vicinity of the monument.

The best light to capture the atmosphere of the historic mining site is during the morning hours when the sun shines through the trees. Focus on the details of the rock source and surrounding landscape of the Cross Hill, which offers interesting views of the history of mining.

With the children, you can go through a part of the Zlatohora mining teaching trail, which is educational and undemanding. The whole area of the Cross Hill is ideal for family trips to nature associated with the discovery of history, while the city of Zlaté Hory offers facilities for relaxing after a hike.
