Městská dvorana in Lokte is a multi-purpose building built at the end of the 19th century, located in the center of the town conservation in Sokolov district in the Karlovy Vary region. Since 2014 it has been protected as a cultural monument and represents an important element of the historical and cultural heritage of the city Loket. This building, which has been threatened by demolition in the past because of its debilitating condition, was returned to its original form after extensive reconstruction in 2021 and is now serving both the citizens of the city and the primary art school.

The history of the city hall dates back to 1894-1895, when it was built on the site of three earlier houses behind the city hall. The author of the project is not known, but the possible creator is Friedrich Dörfler, although his authorship is not yet proven. The original function of the building was multipurpose; served as a student home for the accommodation and catering of local students of the local real estate, and as social and cultural facilities. After the abolition of the real estate in 1946, the building was moved by the National Committee and served for various social events. At the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, the city administration returned to the historic town hall, leading to the neglect of the Municipal Courthouse. The situation was not resolved even after the change of owner and the building was considered one of the most vulnerable monuments in the Karlovy Vary Region. Only in 2002, the city regained its property and began to prepare its extensive reconstruction.

Architecturally, Městská dvorana is composed of two adjacent buildings no. 312 and no. 313 in Radnice Street, built in an eclectic historical style. The higher building no. 312 served as an accommodation facility with four above-ground floors and is covered by a low-slope saddle roof. The main facade of the building is oriented south and consists of three combined window axes with champagne. The facade is divided by belt rustics, while the side facade is divided into two parts. During the reconstruction, the oldest painting of the ceiling of the social hall, which represents a valuable polychrome decoration of the end of the 19th century, was discovered and reconstructed in the interior.

The ownership and administration of the Municipal Court has undergone several changes during its history. After the real estate was cancelled, the building was moved by the National Committee, which used it until 1951. In 2002, the city of Loket managed to recover the object into its property, which was crucial for subsequent reconstruction. After completing the overall reconstruction in 2021, Městská dvorana became an important cultural and social centre of the city.

Key events in the history of the Municipal Courts include the transfer of the National Committee to the building in 1951, the acquisition of the building back into the property of the city of Loket in 2002 and the completion of a comprehensive reconstruction in 2021. An important award was the acquisition of Patrimonium for futuro in the ninth edition of the National Monument Institute for Rescue and Reconstruction, handed over to the former mayor of the city of Petr Adamec on 15 November 2022.

Today Městská dvorana serves as an adequate space for cultural and social activities of the inhabitants of Lokte. After reconstruction, a basic art school was moved into the building, which uses part of the building. This monument is an important element of local culture and history and is worth visiting not only for its architecture and historical records, but also as a place of current cultural life. Visiting the Municipal Court is an opportunity to appreciate the efforts to preserve the heritage and support local culture, which makes it not only a memory of the past, but also a living element of the present.

Welcome to Lokti, a city that breathes its history from every stone and every narrow teaching. Right now, you're standing in front of a building that is one of the most prominent witnesses to the transformation of this place. The Městská dvorana stands before you. Stop for a moment, take a breath and just feel her presence. Look at its overall appearance and feel the atmosphere that radiates into the surroundings. It is a building that combines the grandeur of the past with the hope of its recent rescue. When you look at it, you see more than just walls and windows, you see the story of the rise, the deep fall and the subsequent rebirth.

Let's go back more than 120 years together in time. Imagine Loket in the last decade of the nineteenth century. It was a time of great ambition and bloom. Just in the years of a thousand eight hundred ninety-four and a thousand eight hundred ninety-five this building was built here. It is fascinating to think that the courtyard was not created on an empty field, but required intervention in the existing tissue of the city. To make room for this ambitious project, three older houses had to be demolished. This tells us how important this building was to the people at the time and how much weight they attributed to it.

Why was the court built? Her original mission was very specific and very human. She was supposed to be a student home for local realists. Imagine the young people who came here to study, your dreams and hopes that they brought with them. This building was a home for them, a place of study, but also a meeting place. In addition to the accommodation of students, the court was to be a social centre of the whole city. It was a place where people met, where there was discussion, where culture was created and where the boundaries between learning and social life were wiped. It was basically the heart of the elk society, instead of full of energy and intellectual movement.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself. Look carefully at the front of the building. Městská dvorana is built in what we call the eclectic historical style. What does that even mean? The word eclectic tells us that an architect, even though we don't know his name today, did not want to be a prisoner of one style. Instead, he chose the best from different historical periods and joined these elements into one harmonious whole. Historism then means that it returned to proven patterns from the past to give the building dignity and a representative look. Look at the details you're seeing right now. Feel the rhythm of the windows and the way the building is broken down. Even though we do not see specific statues or complex paintings today, the structure of the facade itself tells us about the desire for beauty and order that ruled at the time of its creation.

However, as is the case with many historical monuments, the way of the courtyards was not just the way up. After its beginning as a student home and social center, the building changed its role. At some point there was a national committee, which made it a place of power and administration. But then came the era of oblivion. The building began to slowly but relentlessly decay. Introduce yourself as someone who passed the courtyards a few decades ago. You'd see abandoned spaces, shagging colors, and a sense of sadness that something so beautiful is left to its fate. The condition deteriorated so much that the court was threatened by complete demolition. It was very close to the fact that this piece of Loquet history would disappear forever from the city map and leave nothing but empty space.

But at this critical moment, there were people who refused to look at the demise of the monument. Among the personalities associated with the fate of the building was Petr Adamec, for example. Thanks to the determination of such people and the recognition of the value of this place, things seemed almost impossible at the time. The first great victory was the year two thousand fourteen, when Městská dvorana was officially protected as a cultural monument. That was the moment the state said this building was too valuable to be demolished. It became an untouchable part of the historical and cultural heritage of the city of Loket.

Then the hardest part of the job followed. A large reconstruction that lasted several years and was completed in the year two thousand twenty-one. It wasn't just a simple roof repair or a new layer of plaster. It was a precise job aimed at returning the building to its original form. Imagine all those hours of study of old plans and photographs, so that every detail corresponds to what people saw in the year one thousand eight hundred ninety-five. The result of this work is exactly what you see before you. The building shines again and again flows into the surroundings a sense of stability and pride.

This rescue was awarded even far beyond Lokta's borders. In the year two thousand twenty-two, Městská dvorana won the prestigious Patrimonium Award for futuro. It is an award that is given precisely for saving endangered monuments and returning them to life. Moreover, the building was announced by the Construction of the Year of the Karlovy Vary Region. These are accolades that confirm that the court is not only a local success, but a model for the whole republic to deal with historical heritage.

If you're standing in front of this building today, you might wonder what the court means to today's Loket. It's much more than a beautiful facade. It's a symbol of hope. It's proof that even if something looks lost, even if the building has long been lost and forgotten, it can be brought back with patience and love for history. Městská dvorana reminds us that our monuments are like living organisms that can get sick, but with professional care they can bloom again.

Now that you know the story of this building, I suggest you stay with her for a while. Look at it from different angles, see how light hits it and how it fits into the overall picture of the city. Try to imagine those students from the late nineteenth century walking in with books in their hands, and then imagine the quiet dust of years of oblivion that was finally swept away by modern care.

Městská dvorana is now ready to serve new generations and be a place of meeting and culture again. It's a bridge between the past and the future that reminds us where we come from and what we're able to save.

Thank you for stopping by on this story. I hope that the view of this building now brings you a different feeling and that you see in it not only architecture but also human commitment and passion. Now invited to further explore the beautiful Lokt. Continue your journey, discover other hidden corners and let the magic of this city take hold. I wish you a pleasant ongoing tour and many new experiences. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon, when the sun gently illuminates the details of the facade of the building. At these times there are also fewer people in the centre of the city, which allows more peaceful observation of architecture.

You can reach Lokte by car and public transport; We recommend checking the specific connections and current timetables in the search engine. Search for parking on marked areas around the historic city core.

We recommend to bring comfortable shoes suitable for walking on historic streets. A notebook for recording eclectic-style details can be useful for people interested in architecture.

For the best photos, focus on the building's historical elements. The ideal light for images is shortly before sunset. There is a historic town hall nearby, which makes a great background for images from the surrounding area.

Families with children are advised to tell about the original use of the building as a student home, which may be an interesting topic for younger visitors when exploring the centre.
