You may have already noticed the incredible length that surrounds the historical core of the city as an impenetrable belt. This continuous unit measures over a thousand two hundred and twenty meters and its presence here dominates the entire area. Now, if you look at these massive stone structures, try to imagine what it must have been like when these walls first rose from the ground. Can you feel the weight of history? It is not only in stone, but in every metre of this fortification, which has protected the lives, property and freedom of the inhabitants of this great city for centuries.

To understand why these walls are so impressive, we need to go back deep into the past, in the middle of the 14th century. In this period, Polička experienced her rise and became one of the important royal faithful cities. This was not just a title privilege, but it meant a huge responsibility and the need for the highest possible security. The original fortification system, which existed here earlier, was no longer sufficient to match the growing importance of the city and the threats of the time. That's why it was decided to build something much stronger and more durable. It was at that time that these stone walls were built here, which were meant to serve as an inviolable protection for the royal city. This transformation from earlier forms of fortifications to massive stone walls was a key moment in the history of Polička and defined its appearance for many centuries in advance.

Now pay attention to the details you have right in front of you. If you look at the height of the wall, you'll see it's going up to 10 meters. It's a really impressive sight. Notice how this huge whole is divided. It's not just one straight wall, but a complex system that includes 19 preserved baskets. These bastions have been strategically deployed throughout the perimeter to enable defensemen to effectively control the surroundings and protect individual parts of the walls. The main component was a high wall that was equipped with a gallery. This gallery was not only an aesthetic element, but a practical way for soldiers who had to be able to respond quickly to any danger. At the time of its greatest flourishment, this system was even more complex. There was also a so-called parking wall outside the main wall, which formed another level of defense and thus created essentially a double barrier for the attackers. Although this external part was later removed, its historical significance and roles throughout the defense scheme remain an integral part of the story of this place.

Looking at these walls, the figures that shaped the fate of Czech countries and thus the fate of Policka itself cannot be mentioned. Although their traces may not appear immediately to be visible at these walls, their influence is felt in every stone. The shelf as a royal city was closely linked to the power history of our rulers. In the context of the existence of these walls, figures such as Přemysl Otakar II, whose era and influence on the building of royal power lay the foundations for the future importance of cities such as Policka. And we must not forget George of Podebrad, a figure that represents one of the most important figures of our medieval history and whose reign was closely linked to the stability and security of the royal cities. These personalities are not just names in textbooks, but are pillars on which the political and strategic weight of this place stood.

You may now wonder how these walls can be presented to us in such good condition. And that's the most interesting thing. Police walls are not just an ordinary monument; is one of the best preserved examples of medieval fortification system in the Czech Republic. It's really unique. But their path to today's form was not without complications. We must remember that maintaining such a monument requires constant effort and care. Already in 1958, the walls were officially listed as cultural monuments, which was the first big step towards protecting them. But a period of fundamental change followed. In 1972, an extensive reconstruction process was launched, but it was also linked to the controversial disposal of the original park wall. These decisions at the time shaped what you see today. And the recovery process does not end; in 2007, the next stage of reconstruction was launched, which aims to keep this historic gem in the best shape for future generations. It's a constant dialogue between the past and the present, trying to preserve the most valuable thing history has left us.
