Městské opevnění v Kadani was one of the most powerful in the Czech Kingdom. Its construction began in the second half of the 13th century. Despite extensive rendering in the first half of the 19th century, much of the original medieval fortification was preserved. In 2019, the city reconstructed the walls.

Městské opevnění v Kadani was affected by the terrain. The Old Town stands on a strategic high, which is partly made up of a roll rock. From the south it is protected by the flow of the river Ohre. In the east, the river Bystřice flowed (which was brought into the pipeline in the second half of the 20th century). The fortification consists of an irregular rectangle with dimensions from south to north approximately 500 metres and from east to west about 350 metres. The heart of the fortification is Kadaň Castle. An important function of the main watchtower was filled, almost in the center of the city conveniently located, the Town Hall Tower.

The fortification was broken by four main gates, i.e. Zatecká, Water, Holy and Prunerovska gates, and a smaller gate. The main gates were protected by massive foothills, for example, the priming of the Žatecká gate is preserved in the form of a large barbadian. Among the city gates were placed on three dozen defense baskets and towers, among the most important preserved are Minorite or Spital bastion. The effectiveness of the defence was also significantly supported by the fact that the walls are equipped with a so-called wall park, also called Zwinger. There was also a double walled moat in the space in front of the walls.

Kadani city fortification during the Hussite wars played an important role, especially during the siege of the city on September 8, 1421. The city gates closed around 10:00 p.m. In the middle of the night, it was not allowed to enter the city. The violation of the ban was punishable as an attack on the sovereignty of the city. When someone climbed over the walls at night in 1570 and mocked the guard, he was pinned by iron by the decision of the Kadani City Council on his neck and then expelled from town for ten years. The only exception was for Kate's goal, which remained passable overnight, for example for guards.

In the early 19th century the fortifications lost their meaning, in 1820 the regulation on the closure of gates was repealed. Some sections were gradually sanitized, but most notably after the visit of the highest Czech Purkrabi count Karl Chotko from Chotkov and Vojnín on 20 August 1831, which initiated the creation of a decorating society in Kadani. He advocated setting up orchards and parks at the expense of historic fortifications. Last in 1906, the Powder Tower was demolished as part of the work for the unemployed.

In 2019, the city had reconstruction of the walls according to a study by the architectural office of Petr Uhík from 2016. In a few months, two of the five sections of the walls had been renovated, with costs of CZK 15.4 million. A fountain, benches, wooden pergola, brush tiles and a completely new drainage system were built.

Městské opevnění v Kadani is worth a visit. It is a unique example of medieval fortification, which informs us of the history and life in Kadani in the past. The visitor can see here preserved walls, gates and bastions that show the importance and strength of the city in the past.

Welcome to Kadani. Legally, you are now facing one of the most important testimonies of medieval architecture and defensive thinking in our regions. Stop for a moment, take a breath and feel the space around you. In front of you stands the city fortification, which in times of its greatest fame was among the most powerful in the whole Czech Kingdom. If you look at these walls, don't just imagine them as old walls, but as a once impenetrable barrier that separated home from the danger of the outside world. It's a place where there was a need for protection with the ambitions of a city that wanted to show its strength and meaning.

Let us now go back many centuries together. Building this monumental system began in the second half of the 13th century. At that time, strong fortifications were key to emerging urban conurbations such as the Kadani one. The medieval world was restless and the walls were the only guarantee of survival in air strikes or siege. The construction was a colossal task which required huge amounts of material and human work. The goal was to surround the central part of the city, the so-called Old Town, and thus create a safe space for trade, crafts and the lives of residents.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself and to what you see before you. Although the walls may seem to be a calm part of the urban landscape today, strict military logic is encoded in their structure. Notice how dominantly fortifications define the city space. Although extensive sanitation took place in the first half of the nineteenth century, that is, the deliberate demolition of parts of the walls in order to enable the city to breathe and expand, the Badani Kadaň was fortunate enough to have survived much of the original medieval fortification. This is rare within Czech cities and makes this place a unique monument. If you notice the surface of the walls, feel the evidence of recent care. In the year two thousand nineteen, the city carried out extensive reconstruction so that these walls could flow through history for future generations.

When you walk along the fortifications, think about the way into the city and who could enter. The whole system was broken by the four main gates that served as checkpoints and symbols of power. They were Zatecka, Water, Holy and Pruner gates. Each of them had its meaning and connected the city to the outside world. In addition to these main inputs, there was a smaller, less representative gate of Kato, which resembles the darker side of the urban order and justice. Imagine the gates at a time when they were closed for the night, when the guards watched over every move and when entering the city meant recognition of his laws.

The history of these walls is not only about stones, but above all about people and dramatic events. Let's stop at a thousand four hundred twenty-one. At this time, the city was subjected to severe testing when the armies of the second Crusade besieged it. Imagine the tension, the sound of weapons and the fear of the people who have resorted behind these very walls. The walls were then fulfilling their main function, becoming a shield that separated life from death.

A little later, in the year one thousand five hundred seventy, a story took place here, showing us how strictly the gates and walls were guarded. There was an incident at the time, when someone had deluded the walls and was subsequently a guard who had a part in it or was negligible in it, severely punished. It was a clear signal to everyone that the city's security was superior to everything else, and any violation of discipline at the fortifications was perceived as treason.

But times have changed, and with them the importance of walls. In the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty, there was a major reversal of the mandatory closure of gates. The city began to open up to the world in a new sense of the word. The walls were no longer primarily a military element, but they became part of the urban picture. In the year a thousand eight hundred thirty one city visited Count Karel Chotek. His rounds were not only polite, but it became an impulse to form a decorating society. People began to perceive their walls not as the wall that closes them, but as the historical jewel that needs to be decorated and maintained.

If you look around today, you might feel something's missing. And it's true. One of the biggest losses was the Dust Tower, which was demolished in the year one thousand nine hundred and six. It is a sad reminder of how easily a part of history can be destroyed irreparably in the interests of modernization or of inattention. Even without it, the overall feeling of fortification remains strong and authentic.

The interesting thing that may interest you is the incredible power that's written about in historical records. The Kadaň fortification was not just an ordinary fence of glories, but a complex engineering work of its time. Imagine the strategic value the city has gained through them. It was a place that could resist, that could negotiate from a position of strength. It is fascinating to think that the same walls that once repulsed the crosses serve as silent scenes for your walks and contemplation.

Now that you know the stories that hide in these stones, I suggest you continue to explore. Take your time. Try to touch the surface of the walls, feel the cold of the stone, and imagine how many generations of Kadan have gone through them. Follow the wall line, look for traces of ancient gates and explore how the medieval fortress has turned into a beautiful historical center.

Thank you for joining me on this short journey in time. I hope you felt the pride and strength of this place. I wish you a pleasant rest of the visit to Kadani and many other discoveries in the corners of this wonderful city. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring visit brings with it a feeling of renewal and freshness. The surrounding green begins to pick up colors and the light is fine, which beautifully highlights the structure of old stone walls. It is ideal to come early in the morning when the air is still cool and tourists are still few. We recommend taking layered clothes because morning dew and sudden temperature changes can be unpleasant.

In the summer months the walls are heated by the sun and the surrounding vegetation is in full bloom. The atmosphere is lively, but due to high temperatures, walking around the open areas can be difficult. The best time to visit is early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when you avoid the biggest crowds while finding a more pleasant shadow in some parts. Don't forget the headgear and plenty of fluids.

Autumn season offers the most melancholy and poetic atmosphere. The colourful leaves around the fortifications create a wonderful contrast with grey stones and the morning fog makes the memory mysterious. It is best to capture beautiful images before sunset. Due to the variable weather, it is worth choosing waterproof shoes and a coat to protect you from moisture and wind.

Zimą makes city walls very quiet and almost monumentally, especially if everything is covered with snow. Days are short and light is very weak, which creates a rough and cold environment. It is necessary to prepare for the freezing air and wear a very warm winter jacket. Watch out for slippery stone surfaces and plan a visit to use as much daylight as possible.
