Mariánska House No. 16 is a medieval building in Jan Sverma Street in the Old Town of Kadani, near Mikulovická Gate. The monument stands out with the long connection with the Rosary Brotherhood and the combination of Renaissance and Baroque architectural elements.

For centuries, this ancient house belonged to the Rosary Brotherhood, founded in the 15th century. The Brotherhood included the leading Kadanese townspeople and nobles, such as Jan Hasištejnský z Lobkovic. The Brotherhood managed a number of villages around Kadana, such as the Principle, Punitika, Úhosti, Meziřicí, Vadkovice, Lusatia, Žabokliky, Lihodice and Čachovice. The Kadani preacher M. Johannes Leyss, who led him in 1509-1531, worked strongly on the renewal of the fraternity.

The architectural house bears Renaissance features, especially on the facade with a volute shield. In the past, the facade was decorated with sgraffite. Today's appearance of the facade includes a stone plinth with a baroque polychrome statue of the Virgin Mary Queen. The statue depicts Mary in a red dress and a blue coat, with a golden crown, a scepter, and in her left hand she holds a blank Reich apple, a symbol of Christ's reign.

In 1609, Emperor Rudolf II granted the Rosary Brotherhood the right to use its own emblem - a glaze shield with the Virgin Mary wrapped around the rosary, carried by an angel in white robes with golden wings and a cross on his forehead.

The fate of the house has been dramatic throughout history. During the Thirty Years' War, he was repeatedly damaged, especially in a fire in 1635. The noble and evangelical exulant Niklas Vitzhum, the former master of Prunerov, and the hofmaster of Swedish General Johan Banero, lived briefly there. In 1639 Vitzhum opened the city gates to half a thousand Swedish soldiers at Christmas.

Another break occurred in 1786, when Emperor Josef II cancelled the Rosary Brotherhood. Then the house burned down and went into private property. In 1788, the buyer Thaddäus Hartmann and his wife Eva opened the shop here. In 1905 she was the owner of Theresia Schwamberger, Anna Schuhová in the interwar period. In the early 20th century, the innkeeper Josef Kosch, allegedly related to the famous Koschu construction family, was responsible for the baroque and rococo forms of Kadana.

The house is known for its reputation as a Swedish General Johan Banero, who in 1641 housed his army

Welcome to the historic heart of Kadaň. Right now you're standing in a place where time stops and where every pavement and every old brick tells stories from centuries ago. In front of you stands the Marian house, also known as the number 16 house. It is located here, near the Mikulovice Gate, on the old-town part of the city, which has been for long periods of warmth and center of all social life. Feel the atmosphere of peace floating here, even though we know that this house has gone through incredible twists, from the period of the greatest bloom to devastating fires and political upheavals.

Let's look together at what this object really means. The Mariana house is not just an ordinary building. His history is inseparably linked to one of the most important elements of the then society - the Rosary Brotherhood. This brotherhood has been based here for centuries and the house has served as their home, their spiritual and social centre. Imagine those times when the highest nobles and the most prominent townspeople were gathered here. It was not just a group of people sharing a common faith, but an elite that affected the fate of the entire region. The ranks of this fraternity included characters whose names still inspire respect, such as Jan Hasištejnský z Lobkovic. So this house witnessed a meeting of powerful people who were deciding the direction of the world at that time.

Now pay close attention to what you see right in front of you. Even though the house has been reforming and changing its shape over the years, you can still see traces of past epoch. Look at his facade. In his architecture, various styles intertwine, indicating his long and rich history. The dominant element that shouldn't miss you is the Renaissance volute shield. These elegant, swirling shapes on the crown of the house give the building a noble and harmonious look that is typical of the period when people were trying to balance and beauty. This Renaissance foundation forms a fascinating contrast with other elements you can see here. If you look up to the details, notice the baroque polychrome statue of the Virgin Mary Queen. Its colour and dynamics are typical of the Baroque, which brought a new layer of spirituality and wealth into the house. This statue is not just an ornament, it is a symbol of the bond this house had with the Rosary Brotherhood and their devotion.

But the history of this place wasn't always about fame and beauty. We must prepare ourselves for the fact that this house must face great tragedies. If we move in time towards the mid-seventeenth century, we will encounter a very dark period. In 1635, in the midst of the devastating rage of the Thirty Years' War, the house became a victim of fire. The fire that broke out at the time was not only the walls themselves, but the whole background of this important place. Imagine the uncertainty and fear that people living in Kadani had to experience at the time. Yet the house rose from the ashes, repaired and continued its existence, suggesting its incredible resilience.

Another crucial moment that changed the face of this place was the politics and decisions of the rulers. In 1609, Emperor Rudolf II. granted the Rosary Brotherhood the right to enjoy its own brand. That was the moment of huge prestige that raised the house even more on the social ladder. It was an era when power and spirituality intertwined in one body. But as history often happens, everything has its end. In 1786 came the decision of Emperor Josef II, who ordered the abolition of the Rosary Brotherhood. This act closed one of the longest and most important chapters in the history of this house. The spiritual center must have transformed into something else.

And that's one of the most interesting things that you can see here. How the world changes around us. Only two years after the break-up of the fraternity, in 1788, a completely different kind of life began in these areas. Thaddaeus Hartmann has opened his trade here. A house dedicated to prayer and a brotherly alliance for centuries became part of the emerging era of business and business. This transformation from religious residence to commercial object is an excellent example of how the structure of society was changing under the influence of the Enlightenment.

When you look at this object, think of all the names that connected with it over the centuries. Names like Johannes Leyss, Niklas Vitzhum or Johan Banér. Although these may not be everyday names, their presence in the historical records of this place reminds us that you are standing in front of a building that was part of a great history. Each of these people contributed to the fact that this house is not just a pile of stone and mortar, but a living witness to human efforts, faith and political change.

You may now be told whether the echo of prayers or the voices of merchants still resonates in these walls. Even though today's world seems so far away, the Marian House reminds us that history is not just something in textbooks, but something that we can literally touch. It is continuity that connects us to the people who stood before us hundreds of years ago.

Now I want to invite you to continue your walk around the old town. Let yourself drift through the atmosphere of these streets and look around you with the urgency with which you were looking right now. Every other house, every gate, and every alley in Kadani has its own story waiting to be discovered. Thank you for spending this moment with us and for choosing to understand the history of this place. We wish you a beautiful and inspiring journey further.
