Kadaňská radnice Town hall

Kadaňská radnice is a Gothic building located on the Peace Square in the Kadaň Monument Reservation. Her first written references date back to the mid-14th century when the town hall was formed as part of the city market. The tower, which is the most famous element of the construction, was built only at the beginning of the 16th century in late Gothic form. The building complex serves as the headquarters of the City Office Kadaň, office of mayor and gallery of Josef Liesler. Since 1 July 2024 it has been protected as a national cultural monument.

The Town Hall Tower measures a total of 53.75 metres and is still the highest building in Kadani. In its time, it was a building of spectacular and atypical - a sign of wealth and the commercial importance of medieval Kadana. The tower has five floors connected by a right-hand staircase with 120 stairs and is a structural rarity by not containing any roof bag. From the level of the square to the top is the whole stone. On the first floor there is a town hall chapel, which is already mentioned in writing from 1401. It served as a service space for the purkmaster, members of the council and for the oath of officials.

The town hall building is divided into three sections - the eastern, western and longest north. The interior remains Gothic, but the facade facing both the square and the street has been presented in classical style since the beginning of the 19th century with elements of Baroque adaptations from the second half of the 18th century. On the main facade between the windows of the first and second floors you can see four characters. Three of them - from the left Hungarian, imperial and Czech - represent the monarch, the fourth belongs to Kadani himself. All four characters were made in 1816 by Mates Leopold Täublinger for 40 gold pieces.

After 1849, when Kadaň became the centre of the political and judicial district, the City Hall was partly handed over to the State for the State's capital. In the ground floor there was a prison, other premises were used by the tax office and part of the municipality. In 1899, the city bought the neighbouring Sun House on the square to expand the administration space. The renaissance wall figural paintings, which are hidden and not completely exposed, are still preserved under his classical facade.

In 1901 extensive renovation was carried out by builder Josef Petr. The last major exterior treatment was 1991, when the medieval Šlik house was connected to the complex. In spring 2014, the pointed roof of the tower with its gallery was repaired. On the ground floor, the Gothic arched space was preserved, which now serves as the Josef Liesler Gallery.

Town Hall in Kadani is still living proof that the largest buildings in Town Halls can serve the same function for centuries. Visitors can see the original Gothic interior, admire the architectural details of the classicism and understand the role that the building had in the life of citizens from the Middle Ages to the present.
