Mozartovy sady is situated in the slope near St. Andrew's cemetery church in Karlovy Vary, in an area bounded by the streets of Ondřečská, Bezručová and I. P. Pavlova. They go from the Thermal pool to the church. Today is the only opportunity to get closer to the personalities that Karlovy Vary once greeted leurs waters.

The beginning of the local cemetery dates back to 1784, when a new burial site was established behind the Island Gate as a result of the epidemic. The original cemetery at St. Mary Magdalena's church was abandoned. Since 1859, the dead have also been buried in a new cemetery in Drahovice, and the capacity of the Ondřej burial ground has gradually decreased. At the end of the 19th century, the city decided that the place would no longer serve burial. In 1911 the cemetery was integrated into a new park and the following year its territory began to be systematically transformed. The final conversion to the park was completed in 1913.

The most remarkable part of the park are preserved stone tombstones of 20 personalities from the 18th and 19th centuries. These are arranged in the middle of the park above the road into a plan of a large semicircle. The most important name is Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart, composer and pianist, son of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose Empire tombstone is located in the central part. Among the other personalities we find Count Joseph von Bolze, a longtime benefactor of Karlovy Vary, architect Friedrich Gilly from Berlin, doctor Jean de Carr, who was a promoter and friend of the Czech nation, or local physician David Becher. There is also a tombstone in the form of a pole wrapped in ivy, which was a unique form of the comments of trader Samuel Kleber of Saarbrücken. The only exception between purely granite monuments is the classical statue from the circuit Václav Prachner, which does not have a tombstone, but its composition - a woman at a box around 1800 - makes the nature of the district.

Today, Mozartovy sady is a quiet museum of European intelligence for centuries. Their visit is not just by wandering the park, but by investigating the personalities who found their last home in Karlovy Vary. Visitors can read the life data of these interesting characters and think about what Karlovy Vary meant in Europe at the time.

Mozart Gardens, also called Mozart Park, are located in Karlovy Vary on a slope not far from the cemetery church of Saint Andrew. They extend from the Thermal hotel pool to the church and are bordered, among other streets, by Ondřejská Street and Bezručova Street. The gardens were established in 1911 and bear the name of Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart, the son of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was buried here in 1844.

The park was created on the site of an old municipal cemetery. It was established after an epidemic in 1784 beyond the Ostrovská Gate, at the end of Ostrovská Alley, today's Ondřejská Street, then on the northeastern edge of the city. It replaced the previous cemetery at the church of Saint Mary Magdalene. From 1859 onwards, burials also took place at the new cemetery in Drahovice. The Andrew Cemetery was eventually closed and incorporated into the park. The year of its transformation is given as either 1911 or 1913. Remains of the original cemetery have been preserved north of the church.

In the central part of the park, twenty stone tombstones of notable figures from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are arranged in a large semicircle above the path. Among them is an Empire-style tombstone of Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart himself, a composer and pianist. Also resting here is Count Joseph von Bolz, a patron of Karlovy Vary, and Berlin architect Friedrich Gilly, a representative of the Empire style, who died in 1800 at the age of twenty-nine.

Local personalities are also commemorated here. They include spa physicians David Becher and Rudolf Mannl, the latter of whom was also a member of the city council, and Karlovy Vary printer and publisher Franz Franieck. Also buried here are guests from afar: Dresden senator Karl Wilhelm Gottlob Wills with a Baroque tombstone, merchant from Saarbrücken Samuel Kleber, whose grave is decorated with a stone column entwined with ivy, or August Gfroerer from Calw in Württemberg. There is also the grave of Johann Ritter von Weyrother, captain of the Loket region, who died in 1817.

Artistically interesting is a Neoclassical tombstone from around 1800 in the shape of a column with an urn and a mourning woman. The sculpture comes from the circle of Václav Prachner.

A special place is occupied by the grave at the presbytery of the church of Saint Andrew. It contains Jean de Carro, a Karlovy Vary spa physician and balneologist, a friend of the Czech nation and promoter of Karlovy Vary. His pseudo-Gothic tombstone commemorates a man who died in 1857.

Tips for visitors

For the best experience we recommend a visit in the early morning hours or late afternoon when the park is quieter and the light is ideal for shooting.

For a comfortable stay take with you drinks, snacks and especially comfortable shoes, which is suitable for walking along the slope.

For lovers of photography are the best places near St. Andrew's church or in elevated places of the park, especially during the so-called gold watch.

In the vicinity you can take a short walk to sights such as St. Andrew's Church or Thermal Hotel. For families with children sets are suitable thanks to green areas for free movement.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, Mozartovy sady awakens into life, and the colors are gradually beginning to excel. You will watch the first flowers and fresh green foliage, which combined with fine morning light creates a very optimistic atmosphere. For visiting it is best to choose the morning hours when the air is the cleanest. We recommend wearing layered clothes because the morning cold may be present, but the afternoon sun may be warm.

In the summer months the park is in full bloom and offers a rich shadow under the crowns of old trees. The atmosphere is lively and full of people enjoying sunny weather and calm in nature. Due to the large number of tourists in the main summer season we recommend that you arrive as early as possible in the morning to find a quiet place to sit. Don't forget the sun protection and enough drinking water.

Autumn season brings a fascinating colour palette from yellow to deep brown to gardens. The morning mist above the roads gives the place mystery and a calm, melancholy mood. It is the perfect time for shooting thanks to soft light and colour contrasts. It is advisable to take comfortable shoes for walking on a moist surface and warmer coat, because temperatures are beginning to drop.

Winter turns the park into a quiet and rather rough landscape where bare branches of trees and possibly a snow blanket dominate. The atmosphere is very calm because the traffic is minimal during this period. Since the days are short, plan your visit to use the maximum amount of daylight. The need for quality winter clothes, including hats and gloves, is to keep the cool wind from taking a longer walk.
