Neuberg is the oldest monument in Ashsk, located in the village of Podhradí near Ashe in Cheb district. Today, this ruin consists mainly of a 22-metre-high circular tower, which stands on an edge of 29,5 metres high.

The castle probably founded a noble family from Neuberg in the early 13th century. The first written mention of him dates back to 1288. In this period, the Přemyslovovci tried to strengthen their power by establishing castles and settlements, while in the wider Europe there was a struggle for influence between noble families.

After the death of Albrecht of Neuberga in 1288, the castle was won by the Emperor Rudolf of Habsburg by the masters of the Plavna, who returned it immediately to the original owners. Since 1344, all of the Neuberg family's assets in Ashsk have gradually started buying up Zedtwitz, who were related to the original family. Konrád z Zedtwitz won the castle in 1395 after marrying Hedvika from Neuberg. In 1422 Zikmund Lucemburský granted the Zedtwitz Manor independence from Cheb, which was probably a reward for not participating in the Hussite wars. This independence changed the nature of life in the region, especially in the religious context, when Lutheranism began to be promoted here.

The original appearance of the castle is unknown due to historical events. In the past he was damaged by the armies of King Charles IV because his owners used a strategic location near trade routes to Saxony to rob. In 1610 the castle burned down. Until then, he served as the central headquarters of the Zedtwitz, from which they ruled the whole of the Ashes. After the fire, the family moved to new homes in Kopaniny, Doubrava, Smrčina and Podhradí. The material from the destroyed castle was subsequently used for the construction of the castle in Podhradí, which stands in the immediate vicinity. In the 15th century the Church of the Good Shepherd was built around the castle.

Today only a circular tower with a circumference of 19.2 meters is preserved from the building. After the fire of the castle in 1902, which was never reconstructed, the castle and the castle were left without the interest of the city and state. The object has become the target of vandals and treasure seekers. The rescue of the remains of the castle and the ruins of the castle began to be discussed in the 1990s, and successive repairs started after 2000.

The ruin represents an important historical point for understanding the history of Ashia and the influence of noble families in the region. It is advisable to visit it to see the only preserved tower and to know the history of this place.

Welcome to the ruins of Castle Neuberg. Right now, in this quiet corner of the village of Podhradí, you are standing in front of one of the most important monuments of all of Ashia. Stop for a moment and feel the atmosphere of this place. It may seem to you that time has stopped here, but you are actually touching the deep history that has been written here for centuries. Look around you. Even if you see mostly debris and empty spaces today, try to imagine how this place once ruled the surrounding landscape. You stand in a place that was once a symbol of power, a strategic point and witnessed many dramatic events.

Let's go back to the deep Middle Ages together to understand how everything started. The roots of this castle extend back to the very beginning of the 13th century. At that time here the noble family of Neuberg began to build its headquarters, which was to serve as a solid basis for their influence in this area. Although the castle is referred to as a legendary place, the first clear clue in the written records, which gives us certainty about its existence, dates back to a thousand two hundred eighty-eight. That means the castle stood here long before the first chronicler caught it on paper. It was a castle built with the intention of staying, a castle that was supposed to look unruly in the heart of this country.

Now pay attention to what's right in front of you. Although most of the castle walls and buildings have long since disappeared and crumbled into the dust of time, one thing still dominates the whole area. Raise your eyes to the mighty, circular tower that stands right on the edge. It's less than 20 feet tall and it's her, the most significant part of today's ruin. Feel the strength of the stone body that resisted the winds, the rains, and the human meltdown. This tower is the last living witness to the ancient architecture that once existed here. Even if you can't see the entire outline of the castle walls today, this tower will help you reconstruct the size of the entire estate in your imagination. He stands here as a silent guard, still watching over the valley, even though he has nothing left to protect.

But the history of this place is not only about stones, but above all about people, their ambitions and their fates. The sentences and sentences were alternating here, but several names stand out from everyone else. In a thousand and three hundred and ninety-five, the castle became part of a new story when Konrád z Zedtwitz acquired it. This moment was defined by the joining of two generations because Konrad won the castle thanks to his marriage to Hedvika from Neuberg. This marriage union was not only a personal decision, but a major political step that changed the rules of the game in this area. Later, in a thousand and four hundred twenty-two, the castle gained another dimension of independence. Zikmund Lucemburský then granted the entire estate the right to be independent of Cheb, which brought the castle to a higher political dimension.

But history also has its dark and stormy sides. Perhaps you are now told why this location was so strategically important and so dangerous. The castle Neuberg was not just a peaceful seat of nobility. Thanks to its position on important trade routes leading to Saxony, it became a place that attracted dishonest behaviour. The owners of the castle used their convenient location to rob the merchants who passed through here. However, this action had consequences. King Charles IV's troops must have captured the castle, and as a result of these conflicts, this fortress was damaged. Imagine the tension, the raids, and the constant threat that was in these woods and these roads. The castle was not just fortifications, it was an instrument of power that was sometimes used for illegal enrichment.

But everything cannot stay together forever. After centuries of power and conflict came the year of a thousand six hundred ten, which meant a break for this castle. A huge castle fire destroyed the rest of it, and the castle life here practically ended. The Zedtwitz family decided not to stay here at the time and moved to their new homes. Since then, the castle has slowly turned into what you see today - a romantic but sad ruin.

Yet the story of Neuberg did not close in dust and ashes. Although the castle remained abandoned for a long time, after a year a thousand two hundred began to repair and care for this ruin. Because we care about her today, we can admire her and learn from her. It's fascinating how the place that used to be used for robberies that was destroyed by fire has become a place of peace and history that attracts us to visit today.

Before you lie a space full of secrets. Even if you only see the tower and the remains of stone structures, each rock has a story. Feel the atmosphere surrounding you. It's a combination of the calm of nature and the weight of the past. Let yourself be carried away by the ideas of knights, the trade trailers that have been moving around here, and the fire that has changed everything.

But we are not delaying you now. Continue to walk around these ruins, explore the surrounding terrain and perceive the beauty of this oldest monument to Ashska. Every step can lead you to another detail that tells you what life in this castle looked like hundreds of years ago. Thank you for joining us on this journey through time. We wish you a pleasant further discovery of this historic place. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is late afternoon when the sun lights up the circular tower and creates interesting shadows on the remains of castle walls. Autumn season offers beautiful colors in the surrounding landscape, which will enhance the tour.

We recommend to bring comfortable shoes because the terrain at the ruins can be uneven. For families with children, a walk to the tower is an interesting adventure in nature, but it is necessary to be more careful when moving near ruins.

For the best photos, use the view of the tower from the surrounding hills to capture its entire height in connection with the landscape. After the tour you can also visit other places in the surroundings such as the Good Shepherd Church or the Castle in Podhradí.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring on the ruins of castle Neuberg brings a awakening landscape where the surrounding meadows and forests come to life green and flowers. Light is usually soft and diffuse at this time, creating a calm atmosphere for photographers and lovers of history. In practice, spring is an ideal time to visit, because tourists are only just beginning to return after winter break and the crowds are minimal. The terrain around the castle can be muddy after winter, therefore solid shoes with a good heel are necessary. It is recommended to set off in the late afternoon when temperatures rise and the sun hits the wall at an angle that highlights the texture of the stone.

Summer offers the longest days and full sun, which illuminates every detailed groove in the wall, but also brings the greatest demands on comfort. The atmosphere is more lively here, especially on weekends when families and groups of tourists come here. To avoid crowds, it is best to approach the castle as early as possible in the morning, ideally before nine o'clock, or late in the afternoon, when temperatures are slightly reduced. Clothes should be light and breathable, sufficient water supply and sun protection are necessary, because the shade is limited in this area. In the main summer season, the surroundings are busy, which can affect the peaceful experience of history.

Autumn at Neuberg is perhaps the most beautiful season in terms of atmosphere. Tree leaves turn colors into golden and brown shades, creating a dramatic contrast with the grey rock of the ruins. Light is usually low and warm in late autumn, which creates a romantic and a little melancholy environment. The crowds of tourists fall significantly, so you can enjoy the memory in silence. Practical advice lies in layered clothing because the wounds and evenings are already cold, while the noon can be pleasantly sunny. Watch carefully on slippery roads if it rained, and wear shoes with anti-slip soles.

Winter brings to the ruin of Neuberg a specific, icy nature, when snow and frost cover nature and reveal the raw beauty of stone remains. The days are short and the light is cold and sharp, which gives the place a mysterious and abandoned character. It is an ideal time for those who seek absolute peace, because most tourists are avoiding outdoor activities at this time. Warm clothes are key here, including winter shoes, gloves and hats, because the wind can be unpleasant. The visit is best planned for noon when it is the hottest and the sun is the highest to maximize the time spent outdoors without risk of hypothermia.
