Parní pivovar a sladovna v Košířích Brewery

The steam brewery and malt factory A. Lanner in Kosíří is a former brewery in Prague, located on the corner of the streets Na Popelce and Vrchlický under the north slope of Montenegro. The building with the Neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau facade dates back to 1896 and has been protected as a cultural monument since 2024.

The oldest written sources in this location show the existence of hops already in 1587. The brewery itself is first mentioned at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The historical records of 1798 confirm that the smuggler of the farm Jan Tuskani asked for reimbursement of the costs of setting up a brewery apartment, and in 1806 he requested an adjustment of the operation for water and a fridge for the brewery.

The current form of the building was created after 1880 when the brewery acquired the new owner of Alexander Lanner. In 1896 a major reconstruction took place during which Neo-Renaissance and Art-Nouveau facades were created. The project and construction was carried out by the company Brothers Beček, namely Bohdan and Josef Bečka. Before World War I, the object underwent further modernization. The interior space was converted into an administrative centre from 1998 to 1999 according to the design of the design studio Aukett + Collingwood architects.

Between 1880 and 1914, the brewery reached up to 40,000 hectolitres of 10-degree and dark 11-degree beer, which enabled it to compete with the shareholder brewery in Smíchov. But the First World War caused the production to fall in half. After a failed attempt to merge with the Nusel brewery and due to the expansion of the Staropramen brewery, it ended its operation in 1934. In the following years, the Krusovický brewery has set up a storage and bottled beer bottling plant. In 1939 Lobkowicz Brewery in Vysoký Chlumci was bought.

In 1956, the area became a death certificate to state property under the administration of the Sodovkány, the enterprise of the capital city of Prague. In August 1963, the administration was transferred to the Electric Enterprise of the City of Prague, from which Eltodo bought the building in 1994.

A side building with a description number 1 / 18 on the street Na Popelce served as the residence of Alexander Lanner, who was the owner of the brewery and the mayor of Košíř. Since 1953, the Basic Art School of Cinderella has been located in this building. The event of 9 September 2015 was also connected to the building, when the footballer David Limberský, drunk, crashed his car into a fence and a mast of public lighting.

Today, brewery buildings serve as an administrative center for the National Security Office. The building represents a valuable example of industrial architecture at the end of the 19th century and its later use. It is worth visiting especially in terms of preserved facades and the history of local craft.
