Pivovar Hradec Králové Brewery building
Pivovar Hradec Králové is an extensive complex of former industrial işletztva from the middle of the 19th century in Hradec Kralove. After reconstruction in the years 2005-2007, the Regiocentre Nové brewery was established. Today it serves as a seat for administrative and educational institutions. The building represents an important example of industrial architecture in the region.
The construction of the town brewery was started in 1844 by architect Jan Bělský. The first beer was cooked after the construction in 1846. The first reconstruction took place in 1864, which extended the brewery cellars. The modernization continued in 1902, when František Křižík introduced electrical lighting into the premises.
The building complex consisted of architects Jan Bělský, Viktor Weinhengst and Václav Nekvasil. These include city houses with number 54, 55, 56 and 57 and former water tower. Together they close the area of the Brewery Square. The buildings on the south side with facades to Komenský Street are taken out of a brick wall. There is a stone wall surrounding the spine. It is made up of blocks from the vanguard of the demolished Prague Gate, part of the medieval city fortification. There are plastic elements in the wall shaped like lion heads.
The west side with facades to the street of the Czechoslovak army consists of classical houses. They are broken down by rustic and pilasters with small, segmented windows. The facade to Soukenice Street is nine-axis with shallow risalite and Tuscan Pillasters. The right side is the original arch entrance, while the left entrance was broken later.
There is a statue of Gambrin, a beer god, written by sculptor Martin Ježek, in the arch of the south wall. The figure of a man with a royal crown and a cup in his hand contains details in the form of ornaments made of hop leaves for clothing and hop shoots through the keg in the background. Lion-shaped buckles probably refer to the Royal Lion beer, which used to be cooked here.
In 1948, the brewery was nationalized. After 1989 he went to the company Brewery Hradec Králové s. p. As part of the privatisation followed changes of owners and operational difficulties which led to the end of production in 1999. The city of Hradec Králové bought the building from a private company in 2001 after two years of negotiations.
In the years 2005- 2007 there was a complete reconstruction and change in the use of the building, which was named Regiocentrum Nový brewery. This project was awarded the Construction of the Year title in 2008. The premises today include the Regional Office of the Králové Hradec Region, the branch of the University of Hradec Králové, the Centre of European Design and the Eurocentre of Hradec Králové Government. The complex also includes a parking house, a mini brewery and a restaurant New Brewery. In 2011 further modifications were made, including the extension of the cafe.
Many premises are commonly accessible to the public. Part of it opens on special occasions, such as open door days. Brewery Square is used for the organisation of Christmas markets.
The area combines industrial history with modern use and is a valuable element of urban architecture. Visiting this place offers insight into the development of the craft and administrative centre of the city.

Welcome to one of Hradec Králové's most distinctive areas. Right now, you're facing a complex that connects the industrial past with the modern life of the city. In front of you is an extensive space that once formed the heart of the local brewery and today creates a closed, peaceful space of the Brewery Square. Feel the atmosphere of this place where history meets the present. Look around you at the buildings that form this closed unit. Even though there is no fresh-cooked hops in these areas today, you still feel the spirit of the old craft and industrial ambition that defined this place over a century ago.
Let us now return together in time to understand how this journey began. In the middle of the nineteenth century, namely in 1844, the foundation of this place was laid. At that time, an ambitious project was launched to build the town brewery. The author of this initial plan was the architect Jan Bělský, who designed the space to meet all the technological requirements for beer production at the time. The construction progressed quickly and two years later, in 1846, the work was finished and beer was first brewed in the boilers. At that time it was an important business which not only supplied the city, but also represented the development of Hradec Králové as a prosperous centre. The brewery was not just a factory, it was a symbol of progress and a local entrepreneurial spirit.
Now that you're standing in this area, pay attention to the architecture. The buildings you see have undergone a fascinating transformation in recent years. There was a major reconstruction between 2005 and 2007, thanks to which the whole complex gained a whole new use. The so-called Regiocentre New Brewery was created here. This transformation was so successful that in 2008 the project was awarded the prestigious title Construction of the Year. If you look at the overall composition of the buildings, you will see the harmony between the original industrial character and the modern elements brought into the space by architects Viktor Weinhengst and Václav Nekvasil. Today, it is not the workers and students who work in these walls. The Regional Office of the Králové Hradec Region and the branch of the University of Hradec Králové are located in the buildings. It is a fascinating contrast when you realize that where there was a loud process of beer production earlier today, there is administration of the whole region and academic discussion.
When you go through the area, remember the names of the people who left their trail. In addition to the already mentioned architects, the names of prominent personalities such as Martin Ježek are associated with this place. But perhaps the most interesting clue left here by the famous František Křižík. Imagine this resort at the turn of the century, in 1902. At that time, electricity was still new and a symbol of absolute modernism. The company František Křižík introduced electrical lighting into the brewery. This was not only a practical step for more efficient work, but it was essentially a technological leap that moved the brewery into a new era. Whenever you see the lighting in this complex, think of Crusader and how revolutionary this change was in 1902.
Now I want to invite you to a very special walk. Focus your attention on the stone wall that surrounds the conspiracy. Spilka was the key place in the brewery to prepare malt. But this wall contains a secret that goes far deeper into the history of the city than the brewery itself. If you look closely at stone blocks, you'll find that they're not just from the nineteenth century. This wall contains stones from the demolished Prague Gate, which was part of the medieval fortification of Hradec Kralove. It's basically architectural recycling from when the city started to modernize and the old walls were retreating to new roads. Note also the details in the shape of lion heads that decorate this image. These lion heads are silent witnesses of the centuries the city has passed, from the medieval fortress to the industrial brewery to today's administrative center. It's a fascinating feeling when you realize that your hand can rest on a stone that once protected the city's entrance centuries ago.
This area is therefore much more than just a set of buildings. It's a layered story about how the city changes and adapts. From Jan Bělský's first plans, to technological advances with Křižík, to a modern vision of the Regiocentre. The brewery square today serves as an oasis of calm in the middle of the urban hustle and bustle, where in oblivion for a while you can observe the details of the facades and think about the people who worked here generations ago.
Now that you know the story of this place, I suggest you go through the entire area at a slow pace. Take a walk around the plot, look again at the lion's heads and blocks from the Prague Gate and feel the space of the Brewery Square as a whole. Let yourself be inspired by how old industrial monuments can be breathed into new life without losing their identity. I hope this short trip to history has helped you see this complex in a new light. I wish you a pleasant further walk by Hradec Králové and discovering other hidden treasures of this beautiful city. Goodbye.
