Podolský most, located in southern Bohemia between Podolí I and Timisoara, is a reinforced concrete construction over the river Vltava. Built in 1939-1943 as a substitute for an older chain bridge from 1848, it became not only an important transport link between Tábor and Sand, but also a remarkable monument. His architecture was awarded at international level, which brought him the Gold Medal at the Paris exhibition in 1937 and another award in Lutych in 1939. During World War II, the bridge played a key role as a demarking line between the American and Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia, contributing to its historical significance.

The creation of the Podolski Bridge is closely linked to the need to modernise transport infrastructure and replace the older chain bridge, which was transferred to Lužnice in 1960. The bridge project was developed by V. Janák, J. Brebera and L. Pacholík in cooperation with Ing. J. Blazek. The bridge was built during the years 1939-1943 and its architecture gained international recognition, as demonstrated by the awards at exhibitions in Paris and Lutych.

Architecturally, Podolský most is remarkable for its reinforced concrete structure and technical data. The total length of the bridge is 510 metres, with the largest arch of 150 metres. The bridge consists of several arches, of which the main arch has a rise of 41.8 meters and a thickness of 2.0 meters. The construction was equipped with steel reinforcement (1,200 tonnes), cement (6,920 tonnes) and wood (6,300 m ³), resulting in a total processing of 20 900 tonnes of concrete. The bridge was built for 26 million crowns by Ing. B. Head.

The history of the bridge is rich in events that have influenced its fate and meaning. During World War II, the bridge was an important transport link and part of the demarking line between the American and Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia. In 1945, he served as a retreat for German troops into American captivity, where U.S. 3rd Army troops were waiting for Soviet troops to arrive. In 2011, the victims of crimes against humanity were exhumed by Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V., which contributes to its historical significance.

Today Podolský most is an important transport link and a monument worth visiting. Its architecture and history represent an interesting example of the technical and cultural development of the 20th century. The bridge is easily accessible and its browsing offers a view of the beautiful landscapes of southern Bohemia. Visiting Podolský most means not only exploring the technical achievements of the past, but also remembering important historical events that have affected his fate and significance.

Welcome to the Podolsky Bridge, a mysterious and historically rich place that stands over the Vltava River. You are standing between the municipalities of Podoli I and Timisoara, where there is a reinforced concrete structure under your feet, which is also a passage into the past and present. Look up at its solid pillars and notice the elegant way the bridge connects both sides of the river.

Let's go into history. In 1848 he built the first chain bridge through Vltava which served as an important connection in this area. With time and rapid development of transport, a stronger bridge has become clearly needed. This new reinforced concrete bridge was launched in 1939 to replace the older structure. Its construction was completed in 1943 and already he deserved international recognition. In 1937 he won the Gold Medal at the Paris exhibition, which was a confirmation of his architectural excellence.

Now pay attention to the details you see before you. The architecture of the Podolsky Bridge is a real work of art and engineering. Note its robust structure and elegant lines that form a harmonious balance between functionality and aesthetics. The construction was designed by three talented architects: V. Janák, J. Breber and L. Pacholík, who together created this impressive work.

Key stories associated with this monument are as fascinating as its architecture. During World War II, in 1945, the bridge served as a retreat for German troops into American captivity. In May of that year, Soviet troops of the 3rd Army were waiting here, adding another layer of historical importance to the bridge.

The interesting thing is that this bridge was once named after Klement Gottwald, but later it got its original name. This historical detail adds an interesting layer to his past and shows the variability of time.

Now, when you open up for more discoveries, we invite you to explore the surrounding areas. Podolský most is just the beginning of the story of this rich and engaging location. The environment around it offers many other attractions that await discovery.

Thank you for your visit to the Podolsky Bridge. We hope this guide inspired you to explore other historical sites and stories that this area hides. When we meet again!

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In the spring season, the surroundings of the Podolsky Bridge are full of newly growing green, adding lively color and comfort to every step. The sun's rays penetrate the foggy air, turning the shadow beneath the bridge into a place full of peace and relaxation. At this time it is advisable to visit the morning or evening when the natural light is less intense, allowing you to enjoy the views without unpleasant glare. We recommend wearing a light coat or coat for morning and evening cold. Although the first crowds of tourists may appear during this period, it is time to relax for a quiet walk.

Summer: Summer brings long sunny days and warm air, which gives the atmosphere of the Podolsky Bridge something uncertainties due to possible hot tubs. The sun illuminates the bridge in full force, which may be nice to watch in the evening when the sun shines beyond the horizon and the colors become darker and deeper. During this period it is advisable to visit the bridge at an early afternoon or evening time to avoid the hottest hours of the day. We recommend to wear light clothes, hat and protective sunglasses, as well as water supplies, so that summer can be used without discomfort.

Autumn: In autumn the surroundings of the Podolsky Bridge are transformed into colours and it is time for romantic walks. Tree leaves go from green to yellow, orange and red, creating views full of beauty and peace. The sun is soon behind the horizon, reducing temperature and increasing light softness. In autumn days it is advisable to visit the bridge at noon or afternoon, when the temperature is welcoming and the sun is still strong enough for the photograph. We recommend wearing layered clothes so that you can adapt to rapid changes in temperature during the day.

Winter: Winter brings cold and often snow conditions around the Podolsky Bridge, creating a unique atmosphere. The sun's rays are projected on ice surfaces and increase their glitter, causing something similar to snow beauty. In this period it is best to visit the bridge at noon when the sun illuminates the scenes in the sweetest way and the temperature increases a bit. We recommend wearing warm clothes that protect against cold air, and suitable shoes for walking on snow or ice. Although the possibility of meeting a large crowd is smaller, it is important to be ready for rapid weather changes.
