Pomník Josefa Jungmanna, located on Jungmann Square in Prague 1, is an important historical monument. It reminds of one of the key personalities of the Czech national revival. This monument, a dominant element of Jungmann Street and 28th October, was created as a tribute to Josef Jungmann, a scholar and translator who had a major influence on the development of Czech language and literature.

The history of the monument dates back to 1866, when it was initiated by František Palacký, Chairman of the Society of Svatobor, and his son-in-law František Ladislav Rieger. Originally, the sculptor Václav Levý was entrusted with the design of a monument inspired by the Vatican statues Menandra and Posidippa. Left also used the portrait of Josef Jungmann painter Antonín Machk from 1833 as a model for the face of the figure. After Left Sudden Death in 1870 the work on the memorial was continued by his friend and associate Louis Šimk, who completed the statue in 1872. The foundation stone for the memorial was laid in 1873 by František Palacký and the ceremonial revelation took place on 15 May 1878, in which Jungmann Square was named after the scholar.

The architecture of the monument is characteristic of history. The bronze statue of Josef Jungmann sitting in a chair with an advanced scroll and a writing straw in his hands is placed on a four-metre syenite, marble and granite plinth. The statue was cast in Vienna, while the base was designed by Antonín Barvitia by Erhard Ackermann from the Bavarian Weisenstadt. The monument is decorated with brass laurel wreath and metal inscriptions with the name Josef Jungmann and the year MDCCCLXXVII.

The monument was built as part of the Czech national revival, which focused on honoring the personalities who contributed to the development of the Czech language and national identity. The activities of associations such as Svatobor were crucial to this process. The monument is a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and is registered in the Central List of Cultural Monuments under the number 39804 / 1-1036.

Today the monument of Josef Jungmann stands as a testament to the importance of the scholar and his contribution to Czech culture. It is a place that deserves a visit not only because of its historical value, but also as an inspiration for those who want to understand the importance of Czech language and literature. The memorial reminds us how important it is to worship the personalities who shaped the national identity and call for their lives and works to be explored.

Welcome to the heart of old Prague. You are standing in a place that bears the name of a great man whose thoughts and work allow us to speak and write in our own, rich language today. Look straight ahead at this monument, which, by its presence, dominates the entire Jungmann Square. The first sight of him will probably welcome you with a sense of deep calm and immense wisdom. The dark, bronze figure who sits in the chair exudes the authority of a scholar who spent his whole life studying, seeking the truth and building the cultural foundations of our nation. Feel the atmosphere of this place where history meets the daily movement of the city, and devote a moment to this figure, who stands here as the eternal guardian of our words.

In order to truly understand why this monument is standing right here and why it is so important to us, we must return together to the nineteenth century. This was the time when our nation was awakening, seeking its own path and trying to confirm its existence through culture and language. The initiative for this work was not created by chance even without the maritime effort of many people. It was a association of Svatobor who wanted to honor the memory of a man who had a major influence on the development of Czech language and literature. Already in the year one thousand eight hundred sixty-six, some of the greatest thinkers of the time began to consider building this monument. It was František Palacký and František Ladislav Rieger. These people knew that the nation's memory must be preserved not only in books, but also in solid materials that resist the test of time.

Now pay attention to the very form of the statue that is right in front of your eyes. Notice how the individual elements are developed in detail. You see a man sitting in a chair in a quiet, thoughtful pose. He holds a writing straw in his hands, an instrument that was at that time the main means of spreading knowledge and ideas. He has an advanced scroll in front of him, which is a clear symbol of learning, writing and the constant development of human knowledge. His clothing is also very interesting and he talks about his social status and the time he lived in. He's wearing a redingote, and he's thrown his cloak over his shoulders, which gives him a noble but also a natural and dignified look. This bronze statue does not only act as a static object, but as a living reminder of intellectual effort.

If you raise your sight a little bit higher, you'll see that this whole bronze figure is standing on a very tall, four-meter plinth. This base is a work of architecture that deserves attention. The architect Antonín Barvitius designed it and its construction is very impressive. Notice how different materials are mixed in this tall stone block. There are syenite, marble and granite. This combination of different types of natural stone gives the whole monument not only stability but also beautiful texture and color depth. The contrast between the dark bronze statues and the different shades of these stones creates visual harmony that attracts the eyes of every visitor.

Looking at this work you can also imagine the work of artists who took care of its creation. The whole process was complicated and lasted many years. The first was the sculptor Václav Levý, who originally designed the work. However, the way to complete it was long. The statue was subsequently completed by Ludvík Šimek in the year one thousand eight hundred seventy-two. It is fascinating to think of the cooperation and patience that the creators had to spend to capture the soul of scholar Josef Jungmann in metal. The very process of laying the foundation stone was a great social event. In the year one thousand eight hundred seventy-third it was laid by František Palacký himself, who was the first chairman of Svatobor. And finally, after years of waiting and effort, the day that everyone was waiting for came. On the 15th of May in the year one thousand eight hundred seventy eight, the memorial was festively revealed before the general public, making it definitely part of the Prague landscape.

You might be interested in one thing that connects this statue to what you're experiencing right now. Josef Jungmann was not just an ordinary scholar or a historical figure from textbooks. It was a pillar on which our ability to express ourselves, our ability to understand the world around us and share our feelings with others. Now, when you look at the straw and the developed scroll, you see not only a piece of metal, but a symbol of the entire national effort to preserve your identity. Every word you say today carries a legacy of people like Jungmann.

So this monument is more than just a work of art. It's a witness to our language roots and proof of how much one human mind can influence the fate of an entire nation. When you look at the four meters of stone plinth, you realize how firmly these values are anchored in our history.

I hope this brief view of history has helped you better understand this place and the character that stands here. But now I will sound you continue to walk around this square and discover other hidden treasures that you will find in these streets of Prague. Enjoy every moment you spend in this historic city and let yourself drift by its beauty. I wish you the rest of the day and a good trip on your next survey.
