The first publishing shop in Žatci is a unique raked kiosk from the beginning of the 20th century. Located in the street Railway Stairs in the garden of the house Řerka no. 1198. The building has been protected as a cultural monument since 28 March 1994. After extensive reconstruction from 2022 it serves as a cultural centre of Trafička.

The stand was built in a strategic location near the railway stairs, where passengers travelled towards the train station. He served as a newsagent and its creation fits into the period of development of infrastructure and commercial services near railway hubs. At that time, Heimattl was popular in architecture, which emphasized regional traditions and craft details.

It is a single-storey raked building with a square plan and a area of 9 m ². The construction fillings consist of non-braided bricks. The architecture excels with demanding carving details, specifically decorative grooves, seared beam edges and richly profiled sales window with front posts. Over the facade there are characteristic congested triangular shields that pass into the needle roof covered with green glazed bobbies.

After World War II, the object gradually faded. It was closed and later served as an illegal homeless dormitory. In 2021, Daniel Černý bought the building, which at the same time reconstructed the Žetek synagogue. The disposal of the waste was followed by a comprehensive recovery, which made the shop open in 2022. In 2023, the building was awarded the Golden Cimburi Award in the category Restoration of Cultural Monuments.

Currently, the centre called Trafička hosts exhibitions and concerts. The owner of the premises also plans to set up an experience sleepover.

The monument represents a rare example of preserved first-time commercial architecture on a small scale. Her visit offers a view of precise craftsmanship combined with modern use.

Welcome to the beautiful city of Žatec. Right now, they stopped in front of one of those little but incredibly expensive objects for the soul of the city. In front of your eyes is this small but architecturally rich sales stand. At first glance, you may think it's just a small box, but believe me, her presence here is of profound importance and carries inside walls full of stories. Feel the atmosphere of a place that has witnessed human movement, expectations and travel for decades.

Let's go back together to when this booth was being built. We are in the first republic, at a time when our country was built into a modern and confident state. This object was absolutely crucial to anyone who was going to travel. Thanks to its location directly at the steps leading to the train station, it was absolutely necessary for passengers. Imagine those people at the beginning of the twentieth century, buying newspapers, little flavors, or just relaxing for a while before they got on a steam train in the morning fog or afternoon sun. This booth was the point where the city met with the outside world, where information spread and where all the great roads began.

Now pay attention to the construction itself and what you see right in front of you. Look at her fascinating design. Notice how dark wooden beams intertwine with brighter surfaces. This is a so-called raked construction, which is absolutely typical of this type of architecture. The whole style, which seeks to combine the human home with traditional craft and nature, adds incredible comfort to the stand. If you look closer at the wooden parts, notice the tiny but very demanding carving details. Every notch in the wood tells the story of the workmanship of the then craftsmen who put their whole skill and art into this small object.

Now, please look up your eyes even higher. Look at the roof of this booth. It has a very interesting shape of a needle that guards this whole small structure. It is covered with green bags which have a special, shiny surface thanks to its glazed layer. These bags are called bobbies and their rich green color creates a wonderful contrast with wooden structure and surrounding environment. If you look at them at a certain angle of light, you'll see how beautifully they reflect the outside world and how they give the whole object its unique character.

But the history of this place wasn't always about beauty and glory. After World War II, the fate of this little stand changed. The time has come for extinction and neglect. The object began to decay, its shine faded and its significance for the city gradually faded away. In one of the darkest chapters of his existence, he even served as an illegal place for sleeping people who had nowhere else to go. It was a sad sight to see how such a beautiful thing could be forgotten and left to its fate. Yet his story didn't stop. Already in nineteen hundred ninety-four this stand was recognized by its value and entered into the list of cultural monuments, giving him hope of saving.

The break occurred recently, thanks to human commitment and faith in the value of history. In the year two thousand twenty-one, ownership of the building moved into the hands of Mr. Daniel Black. He chose something that most people might not have seen at the time - he chose not only to save this little piece of history, but also to breathe into his new life. The whole recovery process was challenging, but the result is what you're seeing right now. In the year two thousand twenty-two, this space reopened itself to the world as a cultural center called Trafièka. And for this wonderful work, for this restoration of cultural heritage, he won in the year two thousand and three prestigious awards of Golden Cimburia. It's proof that even a small object can become a great symbol of renewal and culture.

But there is one interesting thing you may not know. It's fascinating to see how this small, practical point of sale has become the heart of culture. It's like a small rock in the river suddenly turned into an expensive jewel. This change from the sales stand to the place where people gather for art and culture is one of the most beautiful stories you can find in Žatci.

Now that you've seen this unique piece of history, I suggest you continue your walk through the city. Žatec has many more surprises waiting for your eye and your attention. Feel the atmosphere of this place and enjoy every moment you spend in this historic environment. Thank you for stopping by and giving us your time. We wish you a beautiful and inspiring journey further.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is during spring and summer months, when the detailed wooden construction of the building in natural light stands out. Transport to Žatka is possible by car and public connections; Check the actual traffic options in the current search engines.

When visiting, we recommend taking the camera with you to capture the unique first public look of this sales stand. The best photos can be taken from an angle that emphasizes the raked construction, ideally in the morning or afternoon hours when the light is softer.

Children can observe the unusual appearance of a building that resembles small houses from the last century.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surroundings of the shopping stand in Žatec awaken to life and nature begins to grow green around them. The light is soft and pleasant, which creates a fresh atmosphere. We recommend wearing light layers of clothing and visiting the place in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

In the summer months it dominates intense sun and hot air, which highlights the colors of the historical object. In the high season it is advisable to choose light and breathable fabrics and a wide hat on your head. The best time to visit is in the early morning or late evening to avoid the highest temperature.

Autumn brings golden shades of leaves to the city and a specific fog that gives the memory a mysterious touch. The lighting is softer and richer in this period. For comfortable movement, waterproof shoes and a warm sweater are necessary, ideal for days with bright skies.

Zimą is the atmosphere in Žatci calmer and space around the stand can be covered with snow or freeze. At advent time, the place is cozy, even if the air is freezing. It is necessary to choose warm winter clothes, gloves and hat, and we recommend a visit in times when daylight is still visible.
