Propadený zámek is an early medieval and primordial castle on the island hill Stulec above the right shore of Berounka. It lies approximately one kilometre southwest of Branov in the district of Rakovnik in the Central Bohemian Region. The monument is a significant long period of use from bronze to early Middle Ages. Its terrain remains are protected as a cultural monument.

The oldest traces of use of the site range back to the late Bronze period or the latter. They were confirmed by the findings of ceramic shards from 2005 and subsequent archaeological research from 2006 to 2007. The later use of the building is documented in the middle and younger times of the castle. Historical sources and opinions of experts were different in the past. Josef Ladislav He called the pussy of the castle without papers Slavic, while Josef Malický assumed the Latin period. Tomáš Durdík found no sign of settlement during the surface survey. He thought the fortifications served as a refuge for the people of the area at the time of the threat.

The archaeological site is located at an altitude of about 340 metres on the island of Křivoklátské Highlands. The surface of the island is divided by four line lines in five parts. The first stony wall about 40 centimeters tall is encamped in its narrowest place. The second, more massive wall is 40 meters further northeast. Magnetic measurement showed a stone structure based on rock ground. The inner side of the wall shows traces of strong heat; There was a burned-out lubricant with wood marks. Followed by an acropolis with a small platform. Here was probably the most intensive settlement, although the entire area of the island was probably used.

The third wall is 150 meters from the second wall. He's connected to the fourth, best visible in the field. It is believed that the first two are prehistoric, while the last two are early medieval. The fourth is proven to be middle-aged fortified. The entrance to the castle was about three metres wide passage between the last valley and the edge of the cliff. The original journey can today be represented by a deep introduction in the slope from the village of In Luhu.

The second wall was probably damaged by stone mining. The name Propadený zámek, which was first mentioned by Jan Erazim Vocel, is a traditional name which does not correspond to the actual building design of the building. Interesting is the construction of the second wall; Thanks to traces of high temperatures on the inside, it was previously referred to as a covered wall.

Today the remains of the castle are protected as a cultural monument. The location allows you to observe the remains of prehistoric and medieval fortification in the natural terrain above the Berounka River.

The site represents a valuable document on defence systems and settlement processes in the area of Křivoklátské uplina. It is a suitable goal for people interested in archaeology and history of Czech prehistory and early Middle Ages.

Architectural development

The fortification consists of four walls, the first two being prehistoric and the last two coming from the early Middle Ages. The second wall is a stone structure with visible traces of strong heat and burnt lubricants. The entrance to the castle was solved by a three-metre passage between the fourth valley and the edge of the cliff.

Welcome to the top of Stulec. You're standing in a place that carries a deep secret that will instantly charm you with its untamed power. While you're looking around, believe me, you don't just see the natural phenomenon. Under your feet is a layer of history that goes much further back than it might seem. Feel the cold breeze that rolls up the right bank of Berounka and rises to you. This river that flows beneath you has been a key route for thousands of years, an orientation point and a natural boundary. It is because of its strategic position on this sharp hill that this place has become a home for people who have sought security and protection.

The name you may have already noticed is Propadený zámek. Maybe you're a little shaky because there are no tall stone walls around you, no towers or monumental gates. But don't be fooled by that name. Although the word lock evokes medieval buildings, the truth is much older and fascinating. By the time there was ever a stone house, this place had already been inhabited. Propadený zámek is actually an early medieval and prehistoric castle. It's a place where all kinds of human beings collide. Imagine you're standing in a place that served as a refuge. As the danger approached, the people of the surrounding valleys came here looking for protection in these natural and artificial barriers.

Now pay attention to what you see around you. Even though nature is now trying to take over this site again, you can still perceive the structure that people have created thousands of years before us. This site is not just one permanent territory, but is carefully divided. If you look around the surrounding terrain, you can see the traces of four line lines. These times were not just a pile of land, but a complex defense system that divided space into five separate parts. This castle architecture was designed to provide maximum protection while allowing organized life within. There is a small acropolis platform in the heart of this whole. Although today it is only a shadow of its past glory, it was the most important part, the place where probably the most important centre of the entire castle was located.

Now let's go deeper into time and look at how scientists discovered this place. The history of this place is not only about legends, but about concrete, tangible evidence. A few years ago, in precisely 2005, there was a moment that had a profound effect on our view of this hill. The archaeologist Daniel Stolz, in his research, came across something that may seem like an ordinary stone or a piece of clay, but actually it was ceramic shards. These tiny fragments of vessels are like keys to a long-forgotten door. It was these findings that indicated that the use of this site dates back to the late Bronze Age. This means that people have been building their fortified settlements here for thousands of years before our modern society began to form.

The follow-up research that took place in 2006 and 2007 brought further confirmation and extended our horizon. Archaeological surveys showed that the fort was intensively used even during the period of the Halštat period and later, in the period of the middle and younger times of the castle. Each of these eorts left an invisible mark on this hill. Imagine the constant life that took place here. Generations after generations, people came, built, discovered new ways of living and left again, but this place, thanks to its impenetrable position on Stulucci, remained the same point in time.

Here is one of the greatest mysteries of this place. How did a place that was so important to people's survival in the Bronze and Iron Age get a name that refers to a castle? It's a fascinating contradiction between what the folk names say and what the scientific methods tell us. Maybe over the centuries, people have tried to interpret this place based on what they saw, or there really was something here in later times that resembled the castle, but that in time literally fell into the ground or disappeared into oblivion. This ambiguity gives the place a special atmosphere of mystery. Every step you take after these scabies can lead you to another unknown part of history.

Feel now the peace and quiet that exists here. It is silence, but it is full of echoes of the past. Even if you don't see any houses here today, no fireplace or people's movement, their presence is in every find, every profile of the waves and every shard of ceramics found here. These places are not just dead monuments, they are living chronicles of human efforts for security and stability.

Now I suggest you continue your walk and pay attention to the surrounding terrain. Try to see in the eyes of nature those lines that once formed impenetrable barriers. See how the landscape changes and how the castle has adapted to the natural shapes of the hill Stulec. Every corner of this location has a story waiting for you to discover it. Thank you for choosing to visit Propadený zámek and become part of its history. Brief this view, enjoy the peace of this place and let yourself drift through the atmosphere of this exceptional archaeological site. Brief your journey and enjoy every moment spent in this combination of history and nature. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, archeological remains are surrounded by fresh greenery and first flowers, creating a beautiful contrast between fragile nature and stone remains. The atmosphere is encouraging and the light is soft thanks to the lighter sun, which is ideal for observing the details of the ruins. We recommend to prepare an outfit suitable for variable weather, ideally several layers, and visit the place in the morning when there is still relative calm.

The summer season offers the most intense lighting that highlights the structure of the ruins, but can also create sharp shadows. In the main summer season there are most visitors at the sights, so it is best to arrive immediately after opening to avoid the greatest heat and crowds. Don't forget enough drinking water, a protective hat and solid shoes to move in dry terrain.

Autumn moons bring melancholy mood to the area, accompanied by morning fog and golden shades of surrounding vegetation. This period is excellent for photo lovers thanks to dramatic light and deep shadows between ruins. In view of the wet subsoil and the colder air, it is necessary to choose waterproof footwear and warmer clothing, with the number of tourists falling significantly at this time.

In winter, the ruins act raw and monumental, especially when the terrain is covered by frost or snow. The atmosphere is quiet and lonely, which allows deep perception of history without any distracting influence around it. Due to short days and lower temperatures, plan a visit around noon and do not forget very warm clothes and increased caution on slippery paths.
