Radnice (Loket) Town hall
The town hall in Lokti is a Baroque building from the end of the 17th century, built on the foundations of the Gothic townhouse. It is located in the historic part of Lokte in the district of Sokolov in the Karlovy Vary region near the square, where it intersects with the street Radnice. It serves as a seat of the City Office and hosts a local library. It is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
The original town hall was on the opposite side of the square, but after a 30-year war it was decayed and since 1680 the city council had been meeting in the castle of Loket. For the new town hall, the city reached out to Prague architect Abraham Leuthner, who proposed two options. The city council opted for a second draft, scheduled for the south side of the square, where Andreas Pleyer's house stood. The construction took place between 1682 and 1687, but Leuthner was just overseeing as he was simultaneously working on the reconstruction of the monastery church in Waldsassen. The interior was completed in 1696.
The building design of the town hall refers to an older Gothic building, which is evidenced by rolled ceilings in the basement. The main building has an almost square floor plan and is decorated with a six-storey tower with onion beating and lantern. The facade is divided by pilasters and frames, the windows are combined with embedded fillings between them on the second floor. The windows of the first floor have forged bars. Above the entrance to the basement is a baroque supraport with a broken front. On the ground floor there is a central corridor and two side tracks where there are different types of vaults.
In 1686 a polychrome city emblem was placed above the entrance and old clock was moved into the tower from the castle. The stone mark under the main ledge comes from the original town hall, on it is a hand in armor with a sword and a lion with a symbolic key to the kingdom of the Czech Republic. The half-shields lie on the suspect bounded by a pillar with balls, divided by a diagonal arm. A one-storey building was later built, which burned down in 1725 and was subsequently rebuilt. In 1913 he proposed a plan to rebuild the town hall, but after the First World War no funds were found.
Today the town hall still serves as a seat of office and library. It is an important monument building that represents a combination of Gothic foundations and Baroque architecture. Visiting this monument offers knowledge of the history of the city Loket.

Welcome to the beautiful and historic city of Loket. Right now, listening to this recording, you're standing right in front of one of the most important and beautiful buildings in this place. Before your eyes is the town hall, which is not only the heart of the local administration, but also a silent witness of the many centuries that have taken place here. Look at its massive form and try to perceive the strange atmosphere that radiates from its walls. This building is not just a simple house for officials, it is a symbol of the stability and continuity of this city.
If you look at the city hall, you may feel its nobility and richness immediately. Her appearance is typical of the Baroque period, which now addresses us with its elegance and a sense of detail. However, when you look at it more closely, you realize that this building is not just the result of one time. It's a fascinating combination of different historical layers. This Baroque town hall stands right on the foundations of a much older, Gothic townhouse. It's like two different epi, two different ways of seeing the world, intertwined and created this one whole. This connection between old and new is what makes this memory so special.
Now let's go back deeper into the past to understand why this building actually appeared here. The story of the new town hall begins at a time when old conditions in the city administration began to change. There was a situation in 1680 that forced local leaders to act. The town council had to meet in the castle at the time because the original town hall was in very bad shape and began to decay. It was clear that the city needed a new, dignified mansion that matched its importance. That's how the new chapter started. Between 1682 and 1687, the building of this Baroque town hall took place. The architect Abrahám Leuthner was behind this magnificent work, who was able to create a building that is still astonishing.
Now that you know its origin, please pay attention to the details in front of you. Notice how the building rises to a height. The dominating of the entire space is undoubtedly the tall, six-story tower. It is she who determines the character of the entire town hall. Look up to its peak. There you will see a beautiful onion pit, which is so typical of Baroque architecture, and above it is a lantern. This tower is not just an ornament, it has a deeper historical significance. In 1686, the old clock that used to serve in the castle moved into it. Imagine the tradition that has passed from one place to another in this tower.
Then when your eyes move to the entrance itself, you'll be interested in another detail. Above the entrance there is a polychrome, that is, a colourful, urban character. Its colours and shapes are designed to immediately attract the attention of anyone entering the building. And if you look at the stone sign that comes from the original town hall, you'll see in it a symbolism that has to interest you. It shows a hand in armor that holds a sword, and beside it a lion with a key. These symbols spoke of the power, protection and powers the city exercised in these areas.
But the history of this building was not just about building and beauty. She had to deal with bad luck. In 1725, there was a major test when the fire hit the built-in building. This event was painful for the city hall, but it also showed the strength of the local community spirit because the subsequent new construction allowed the building to continue its existence. Even later, in 1913, the city hall was being nurtured and a plan was proposed to reconstruct it to serve generations to come.
Today, City Hall is doing its homework in the modern world, but we can still feel the old feeling. It serves as a seat of the City Office and also hosts the City Library, which makes it a place where history meets the living culture and everyday life of people. It is a place where information is not only stored, but also decided on the future of this city.
Before you take your next trip around the historical center, stop for a moment and just watch. Feel the weight of history in every stone. Feel the contrast between the Gothic fortress of the foundations and the Baroque lightness of the tower. This town hall is not just a building, it's a living organism that evolved along with the city of Loket.
I hope this brief insight into the past has helped you better understand the place you're in right now. Please continue your tour and let yourself be carried away by the beauty of the next corner of this city. You have many other interesting things ahead of you. I wish you a nice walk and enjoy every moment you spend in this wonderful city. Goodbye.

Spring: In the spring, the town hall in Lokt is strangely dazzling because of the sunlight, which is projected through its historic windows and decorated with medieval architecture. Flowers around the building are beginning to bloom, which gives a place of attraction and durability. It is advisable to visit the semi-deck when the sun is at the highest level and can illuminate architectural details. It is recommended to wear light clothes with short sleeves because the temperature is usually pleasant. Less people are obvious this season than in the summer season, which allows for a more peaceful tour.
Summer: Summer in Loktu offers long sunny days and warm air, which is ideal for exploring the town hall. However, due to the strong sun, lighting on some sides of the building may be too intense, which affects the visual impression of architecture. It is recommended to visit the town hall in the early morning or later in the evening when the light is less direct and milder. The wearing of short dresses with a sunscreen on the head is suitable for handling heat. In the summer months, more visitors are usually gathered, which requires patience and perhaps even a better choice of time for a tour.
Autumn: In autumn, the City Hall in Loktu offers unique views thanks to golden and orange lighting, which is projected through leafy trees around. This light effect highlights the historical form of the building and creates an atmosphere of calm and relief from the summer flood of visitors. The best time for a tour is usually in the shade when the sun starts to fall. It is recommended to wear warmer clothes with shorter sleeves because temperatures can be variable. There are often fewer people in this season than in the summer, which allows for a more peaceful tour.
Winter: Winter brings city hall in Loktu into the atmosphere of stiff colors and quiet light. Medieval architecture is projected into a darker environment, which can highlight its historical depth and more significant details. It is advisable to visit city hall in breaks between rain or snow, when visibility is better and the atmosphere is quieter.
