Řakom is a prehistoric castle on the edge of Mála Doubrava hill in Klatova district. During the period of eneolite there were members of the Champ culture. The location is remarkable with its unusually high altitude of 680 metres and preserved fortification system, which is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The fort was established when agriculture and copper processing developed in Europe. The place was inhabited by the Champ culture, a specific group based in southwest Bohemia and adjacent Bavaria. The reasons for choosing such a high location are not clear, as it is out of the ordinary practice of the people at the time.

The area of the one-piece fort is approximately 500 square metres. The access side of the object is covered by an arc fortification extending from west to northeast. This defensive system consists of a massive outer wall and a moat followed by a lower inner wall. The moat reaches a width of four meters and a depth of two meters. The east and south side of the site naturally protects steep slopes with buliznik rocks.

The key moment for the history of the site was the archaeological survey of the Bashtová husbands in 1986. During it, two probes with a 50-centimeter powerful cultural layer were exposed. It contained ceramic shards and two coats of chamese culture. Other prehistoric findings have been identified in the flush layers on the slopes. There is no evidence of other than non-eneolithic settlements.

Today the castle Řakom, also known as Drslavice, is a protected cultural monument. Visitors can still see the remnants of the waves and trench in the field, which are indicative of ancient construction activities. The location represents an important proof of the prehistoric settlement of the region and thanks to its location on the hill Mala Doubrava offers the possibility of looking into the way the Champ culture lives in non-traditional natural conditions.

Welcome to the historical monument of Řakom, a unique archaeological site that will offer you a journey to the ancient times of Champ culture. You are standing in front of a huge castle located on the top of Little Doubrava, where the mighty walls and moat are out of view with their historical depth. Underneath your feet, the area is spread with beautiful bulging rocks that provide natural defence and a beautiful view of the surroundings. Imagine you were in the period of eneolite when this place was the seat of people with rich culture.

Let's dive into Řakom history. This castle was inhabited by members of the Chamese culture around 3,000 years before the century, a period known as the eneolite. People then built this place at an unusually high altitude of 680 metres, thereby ensuring security and strategic superiority. It is fascinating to realize that this site was already the center of human activity long before our time.

Now pay attention to the architecture of the castle. Notice the massive outer wall that stretches around the entire site and provides strong defense against the enemy. A moat of four metres wide and a depth of two metres gives an impression of the fortress that has been designed with regard to the safety of its inhabitants. The inner wall, though lower than the outer wall, contributed to the complexity of the defense system. The natural protection from the eastern and southern slopes with buliznik rocks gives an impression of a place designed by both nature and humans.

The key moment in memory of Řakom is an archaeological survey carried out in 1986 by the Bashta husbands. These experienced scientists have uncovered a cultural layer that allows us to better understand the life and culture of the people who once occupied this place. Thanks to their work, Řakom was declared a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic in the 20th century, which ensures its protection and study in the future.

The interesting thing about this place is not only its historical context, but also its geographical location. Being placed at such an altitude was a real mystery and innovation for the people back then. Think how it must feel to be part of the community that designed such a unique settlement.

I suggest you explore other parts of the castle and think about the lives of the people who once lived here. Every land has its secrets and Řakom is a great place for those who want to understand the ancient past. Thank you for your visit to this historic place. I hope this guide inspired you and brought you into contact with the rich heritage of the Champ culture. With God and if you return, remember to enjoy the other hidden mysteries Řakom offers.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is spring or autumn, when vegetation is thinner and the terrain of the fort on the hill of Mala Doubrava is better clear. In summer, the site may be covered with lush greenery, making it difficult to move and observe the remains of the fortifications.

You can easily walk to the location from the village Řakom.

For the visit we recommend fixed shoes for the field and suitable clothes. As this is a free-access ruin in nature, take with you plenty of fluids and snacks, because there are no refreshments stands on the site.

The ideal time for photography is shortly after sunrise or before sunset, when the oblique light better depicts the terrain inequalities and remnants of prehistoric fortification. The best images are taken from elevated areas on the edge of the tip.

In the surroundings you can visit the picturesque village Dolan or take a walk on top of Little Doubrava. For families with children, the place is suitable as a destination for a shorter trip to nature, where children can discover history in the field, but we recommend adult supervision due to a degraded surface.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring at the archaeological site Řakom brings an awakening landscape where the frost retreats and the country gradually warms. Light is soft and diffuse at this time, highlighting the fine texture of the earth and revealing the first green shoots between the ruins. The atmosphere is calm and full of expectations because nature is restored after winter sleep. For visitors, this period is an ideal time to visit, as you will still encounter a minimum of people, which allows quiet and focused exploration of historical layers. Practical advice mainly concerns unpredictable weather, which can bring sudden rain and sunny breaks. It is recommended to put on layered clothes, which you can easily adjust according to temperature, and carry a waterproof jacket. The shoes should be firm and suitable for mud, because the roads can be slippery and soft after rain. The best time to visit is in the morning when the light is brightest and the temperature is not yet too high, which makes it easier to move around the terrain.

Summer at Řakom means full vitality of nature and long days with intense sunlight. Green vegetation is in full bloom, creating contrast with grey stones and ground structures of the monument. The atmosphere is lively and energetic, but also louder thanks to the larger number of visitors who are heading here in the main summer season. The sun shines long and strong here, so the shadow is rare and temperatures can be high. Practical advice focuses on sun protection and hydration. It is essential to have enough drinking water, a hat or a hat and sunglasses. Clothes should be light, breathable and made of natural materials, so that the body breathes well. Because of the expected crowds, it is best to come as early as possible in the morning when fewer people and temperatures are still tolerable, or on the contrary late in the afternoon when the sun is falling and shadows are prolonged, which creates dramatic light effects on the ruins.

Autumn at the archaeological site Řakom offers a unique atmosphere of golden and red shades of leaves surrounding historical remains. Light is softer and warmer, often with a touch of melancholy, which underlines the feeling of history and past time. Nature is preparing for sleep and the air is fresh and colder. This period is less crowded than summer, which allows a calmer tour and better photo shoot without disturbing elements. Practical advice concerns protection against cold and moisture, which increases in the autumn months. It is recommended to wear layered clothes, including sweaters and light jackets, and to carry an umbrella because the rains are more frequent. Footwear should be dry and waterproof to avoid unpleasant foot coldness. The best time to visit is the late morning, when clouds often spread and the sun shines through the trees, creating beautiful light spots on the ground.

Winter at Řakom brings rest and silence, when the landscape is often covered with snow or ice, which changes the appearance of the monument to a minimalist and dramatic shape. The light is short and low, creating long shadows and sharp contrasts between white snow and dark ruins. The atmosphere is quiet and almost mystical, because nature is in sleep mode and visitors are very few. Practical advice focuses on extreme cold and short opening days. It is necessary to equip yourself with warm winter clothes, including gloves, scarf and hat, and wear shoes with a good heel for slippery surfaces. The visit should be planned for a short period of time, as the sun sets early and temperatures fall rapidly. The best time is the late morning, when the day is warmer and the light is brightest, which allows safer movement on frozen terrain and better visibility of historical details.
