Roklanský les Nature reserve

Roklanský les, also known as Kamerální les Roklan or Rachelwald in German, is a significant natural area near the Czech-German border within Modrava municipality in the Plzeňský kraj region. This forest spans both countries and holds historical importance due to its role in territorial disputes between the Czech Kingdom and Bavaria. Today, it forms part of the I. zone of the Šumava National Park as a component of the Modravské slatě nature reserve, making it an area of high ecological value protected under the Ramsar Convention by UNESCO.

The forest's historical significance is rooted in its location on the Czech-German frontier, which has been a site of territorial disputes for centuries. An initial agreement regarding the border near Roklanský les was made in 1707. However, it wasn't until March 3, 1764, that a definitive treaty known as Hauptgrenzvertrag resolved these disputes between the Czech Kingdom and Bavaria. This treaty divided the forest equally between the two states, with each receiving 307 hectares. A further agreement on January 24, 1769, granted grazing rights to the neighboring Bavarian Poschinger family's glassworks estate, highlighting the area's economic significance.

Geographically, Roklanský les is situated in the south-western corner of the Modravské pláně plateau. It stretches between notable peaks such as Medvědí hora (1224 m) and Roklan (1453 m), with its territory reaching towards other significant landmarks like Beerenkopf, Blatný vrch (1372 m), V koutě (1276 m), Malý Roklán (1399 m), and Hochruck (1260 m). This diverse topography contributes to the forest's ecological richness.

Throughout its history, Roklanský les has seen various administrative changes. Initially managed by local authorities, it later came under the control of the Schwarzenberg forestry office in Březník. In 1869, a new forestry office was established at Roklanská hájovna to manage the area independently. However, after World War II and the establishment of Czechoslovakia, records about the forest became scarce until it was incorporated into the Šumava National Park in 1991.

Today, Roklanský les remains a protected natural reserve with restricted public access due to its ecological sensitivity. The area is managed as a bezzásahový (hands-off) zone, allowing for natural succession following events like the bark beetle infestation of 2003. This approach supports the revitalization of peat bogs and the return of original biodiversity, making it a valuable site under international conservation efforts.

Visitors to Roklanský les can appreciate its historical significance and ecological importance without disturbing its delicate environment. While direct access is limited, the forest's inclusion in the Šumava National Park offers opportunities for guided tours and educational programs that highlight its unique natural and cultural heritage.
