The Church of Saint Catherine is the most significant architectural monument of Česká Třebová. At the same time, it is the only preserved Romanesque rotunda in eastern Bohemia. This late Romanesque chapel dates from the first half of the thirteenth century, making it older than the town itself.
It was built in the center of a settlement that arose after the year twelve hundred on a hilltop above the right bank of the Třebovka River. The settlement was founded by the Premonstratensian monastery in Litomyšl during the so-called Czech colonization. The town of Česká Třebová came into being only in the second half of the thirteenth century, during the German colonization under the rule of Přemysl Otakar the Second.
Over more than seven hundred and fifty years of its existence, the rotunda has been repaired and rebuilt many times.
