Rybnov Castle
Rybnov is one of interesting examples of extinct feudal settlements that marked the landscape of northeast Bohemia. The castle was founded between 1437 and 1438 Zikmund z Vartenberka and its first mention in the written sources dates back to 1440, when it was already the administrative centre of the estate.
The interesting thing is that the Vartenberks themselves did not end here. The castle and manor administration were provided by appointed officials. From historical records, at least one of them survived - in 1534 it was Alexej Kyj z Kyjova. However, the nature of the seat changed over time. Sometime in the middle of the sixteenth century the castle stopped being a mansion, which happened in the neighbouring castle in Zahradky. Rybnov, however, has served as a residence for administrative staff for some time. When he was abandoned completely and what was the exact course of his demise, historians unfortunately failed to find out until today.
From the point of view of the construction it is assumed that the castle had two parts available. It was preserved mainly by the removal of the central castle core with a pair of defining elements - a moat carved directly in the rock, which was 6 to 8 metres wide, and necessary fragments of masonry from local sandstone combined with lime mortar. The prefix, which should be on the south-east side, has completely disappeared. The entrance to the castle was probably the road to the stone bridge from 1801. It is not impossible that the prepayment could also exist on the north-west side, where to date it leads the natural path to the platform.
The appearance of the castle changed dramatically as a result of the construction modifications that took place since the beginning of the nineteenth century. The moat was particularly deepened after 1840 and technically adapted for the drainage of water from the adjacent pond. There are very few of these activities left - mainly small fragments of masonry, which researchers tend to seek to fortify the core itself.
Today Rybnov is a quiet place in the Czech countryside, where traces of the past are difficult to find. But it is the hidden historical layer, associated with the administration and economic life of a major estate, that makes this extinct residence an interesting item for anyone interested in the fate of the small feudal centres of Central Europe.

Welcome to the historical monument of Rybnov, the extinct castle that once stood on the shore of the Dutch pond in the picturesque area near Liberec. As you look around you, you can only imagine the festive days when this castle was the living center of administration and power maneuvers. Today, however, there are only tiny traces of it that tell the story of the past, full of changes and historical figures.
Rybnov was founded between 1437 and 1438 by Zikmund of Vartenberk. Originally referred to as a fortress, this fortress served as the administrative centre of the estate. During his peak he was a castle, but already in the middle of the sixteenth century he lost importance in favour of other places such as Zahradky. Although there are only modest remains left of it, the history of Rybnova is rich and fascinating.
Look up and notice these ruins that were once part of a solid castle. Even though we don't see any particular architectural elements here, such as towers or dome, the atmosphere of this place is extremely attractive. In 1801 a stone bridge was built, which probably served as an access to the castle. This bridge is one of the few buildings associated with Rybnov and still testifies to its historical significance.
The key figure involved in the management of the castle and the estate was Alexej Kyj z Kyjova. In 1534 he served as a designated official, which shows that the administration of this place was never easy and required careful planning and organisation.
The fact is that Rybnov is among the extinct feudal mansions in the northeast of Bohemia. This area has a rich history, which is evident in many such extinct castles and castles. Although Rybnov is no longer in full power as a living centre, its presence still affects the landscape and its historical memory.
Let's move on and explore other parts of this fascinating place. Every rock, every cliff has a story to discover. Rybnov is a great place for those who are interested in history and eager to gain a deeper understanding of the past of this region.
