Sadová kolonáda, one of the five major in Karlovy Vary, is a historical monument built between 1880 and 1881. This promenade in the style of neo-Renaissance historism was designed by Viennese architects Ferdinad Fellner and Hermann Helmer. It was originally used as a link to the Blanen Pavilion, but it was demolished in 1966. In 2002, the colonnade was reconstructed and cast iron parts and stone bottom were repaired.

The creation of the Sad Colonnade is closely linked to the development of Karlovy Vary as one of Europe's most popular spa sites in the late 19th century. This period was characterised by the growth of tourism and infrastructure development, which led to the formation of several colonnades as part of the spa environment of the city.

Architecturally, the colonnade is made of cast iron parts made by Prince Salma's Marian iron smelters in Blansko. It is two-arm, 50 meters long and stands on slender Corinthian columns with six-sided corner pavilions. A reconstruction was carried out in 2004 in which cast iron parts and stone bottom were repaired. Accessibility and lighting have also been improved.

Sadová kolonáda was used for drinking the Set Spring, although the vacuum is located in the Military Spa Recovery. Another source was discovered in the late 1980s, the Snake Spring, which was made available to the public on 10 July 2004. This spring is considered the most delicious Karlovy Vary spring.

Today Sadová kolonáda is accessible to visitors and serves as one of many spa monuments in Karlovy Vary. Its historical significance, architectural solutions and connections with Karlovy Vary springs make the colonnade an interesting destination for tourists and locals.

Visit the Set Colonnade offers an opportunity to appreciate the history and architecture of the spa environment of Karlovy Vary. It is a place where visitors can not only relax, but also learn more about the rich past of this area.

Welcome to Karlovy Vary. You just stopped at one of the most important points in this town. You're standing right in front of the Sad Colonnade. If you look around you now, you will see a structure that carries the soul of the city and its rich history. This colonnade is not just an ordinary walk for visitors, it is one of the five main colonnades that form the pillars of local spa life. Feel the atmosphere, feel the calm and elegance this place radiates. It's where nature meets human art.

Now let's go back in time together to understand why this building is standing right here and how it came to be. Imagine the end of the nineteenth century, a period when the city was going through a huge boom. It was these important years, between 1880 and 1881, that this colonnade was built. It was not just a random project, but a thought-out part of a wider plan to connect the city more beautifully and functionally. At that time, the colonnade was part of a much wider route that was used to connect with the Bannen Pavilion. That pavilion was an integral part of this local space at the time, even though you won't find it here today. We must remember 1966, when the Blanen Pavilion was unfortunately demolished. Although this part of history no longer exists physically, the colonnade still stands as a witness to the connection and expansion at the time.

Now pay attention to the very form of the construction that is surrounding you. If you look at the details and how the colonnade is done, you'll see the championship of the time. This whole promenade was designed in a style called non-orenessant historism. What does it mean for you to look at her? It means that the authors of the building didn't want to look at the future at random, but they wanted to draw inspiration from the rich past, from the Renaissance, to create something noble and lasting. Notice how different materials are mixed and how they form a harmonious whole. Look at the bottom of the building. It is a solid, stone structure that gives the whole stability and feeling unwavering. And then your eyes can move up to the finer but equally important elements. The colonnade contains many cast iron parts. This cast iron adds ease to the construction while allowing rich decorating, which is so typical of this style. It is fascinating to think about how these metal parts were produced and how exactly they had to be incorporated into the overall design.

This proposal was not the work of someone random. Behind this whole vision were two very important Viennese architects, which were Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. These men were big names at the time, and their influence on the architecture of spa cities was huge. Now, when you look at the shapes and the overall structure, you see their handwriting directly. Their ability to combine functionality with high aesthetics is precisely what makes this colonnade so special. Even though the names of the specific persons who were present in these premises are not mentioned directly in our records, you can imagine countless spa guests who have rested here, walked and watched the surrounding nature.

But it is important to know that this building is not just a relic of the past, but a living organism that requires care. In order for the colonnade to look as you see it now, it was necessary to take major steps to save it. There was a major reconstruction in 2002. During this process, experts focused on repairing precisely the cast iron parts that we talked about and also on restoring the stone bottom structure. Thanks to this work the colonnade has been preserved for future generations and can still serve as a beautiful journey for all who want to enjoy the beauty of Karlovy Vary.

If you're looking for something that might really interest you, think about how much this place has changed in the last 140 years. We stand here before one of the five main pillars of the city, but at the same time we stand in a place where history has endured and something has also gone missing. The above-mentioned Blanen Pavilion, which was here earlier, now only exists in our imaginations and historical records. Yet the colonnade does not lose its power. It is fascinating how one building can survive changes in political systems, demolishing neighboring objects and modernising the entire city while preserving its dignity.

Now I just want to encourage you to continue your journey. Let the atmosphere of this place drift. Take a look at the cast iron shapes that are so typical and feel the strength of the stone under your feet. This colonnade is an ideal place for slow walking, for observing light as it hits various surfaces, and for simply using the present moment in the historical context. Continue your journey along the promenade, discover further corners and do not let yourself be delayed only by what you see, but also by what you can imagine. Thank you for choosing this place for your rest. We wish you a nice walk and other pleasant moments in this wonderful city.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit Sada's colonnade is in the early morning or evening when there are fewer people and sunlight creates beautiful shadows between columns. This time also offers ideal conditions for photographing architectural details in the style of neo-Renaissance historism.

Parking and accessibility: The location is easily accessible by car and public transport. We recommend checking the current parking possibilities or connections with public transport before visiting the official website of the city Karlovy Vary.

What to take with you: Don't forget to take a high-quality camera to capture architectural details as well as a guide or city map for better orientation. If you are planning a long visit, also bring sunglasses and a protective tie.

Photography: The best places for photography are both the ends of the colonnade where the most beautiful angles can appear. Sunlight is ideal in the early morning or evening when the sun is not directly above your head.

What to visit in the area: Around the colonnade you will find several restaurants and cafes where you can relax and appreciate local specialities. If you like fun activities, you can look at the nearby field ski centre, which is ideal for families with children.
