The school in Little Svatonovice, also known as the Jirásek School, is a large brick building from 1925 in Scheibal Street. The building has been protected as a cultural monument since 2020 and represents an important architectural element of the village.

The construction was built in the period of the first republic, during the development of education and modernisation of rural infrastructure. The foundation was built in 1914, but because of the First World War, work was interrupted between 1916 and 1918. The building was subsequently completed and collapsed in 1925. The interior was retrofitted by dressing rooms, showers, boards and closets. The school was opened on 1 September 1927.

The project was taken by architect and builder Otakar Nypl, co-worker of Dusan Jurkovic. The building with a rectangular plan is situated north of the centre of the village. The newer is the extension of the gym on the northwest side. The construction stands on a plinth of granite blocks, the rest of the building is made up of brick wall. The roof is made of a brass sheet. The middle oversized tract ends with an octave lantern with a tip.

The ochre facade is decorated with lisenas and interocene tapes with the motif of the fallopian. The central part of the building is three storey and on the top floor there is an oval lodjie, while the lateral tracts are lower. In the interior are preserved original tiles, terazzo, cross and spindle wooden staircase leading to the roof lantern.

At the entrance there is a commemorative record of Josef Schejbal, who has been acting as deputy director at this school since 1929. The building was renovated in 2017. This was aimed at improving thermal and technical properties, namely the heating of the building and the replacement of windows.

Thanks to its architectural value and history, the building serves as an important monument to the local educational tradition. It is recommended to visit the object and see its unique external and internal details.

Welcome to Little Svatonovice. You are standing in front of a building which, both in size and appearance, dominates the surrounding space and is an essential part of the face of this village. In front of you, Jirásek's school, a massive brick structure, tells the story of the desire for education and the persistence of the locals. When you look at her, the first thing that's likely to interest you is her nobility and dimensions that make her the true architectural pillar of the whole town.

Let us now look together at how this building was created, because its history is full of twists and obstacles. Imagine the way to finish it wasn't easy at all. The first stones of the foundation were laid even in the year nine and fourteenth. At that time, there was great enthusiasm and faith that the school would soon serve the children. But at that time, the world was on the verge of great chaos. The First World War that followed brought uncertainty and lack of resources. Thus, between years, the nineteenth and a thousand nineteenth had to stop altogether. Thus, the building remained in an unfinished state, as a silent witness to the tragic conflict that changed the map of Europe.

If not the perseverance of the people, maybe the school would never be finished. But after the war ended, work started again. The building was finally completed and officially approved for use in the year of the ninth twenty-fifth. Imagine that feeling of joy when the first September of the year of the ninth 27th school finally opened up and for the first time there were voices of pupils. It was a symbol of a new beginning and bloom for the whole village.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself, which is right in front of you. Look at the overall shape of the building. Notice its rectangular ground plan, which is stable and balanced. If you look up above, you'll see that the middle part of the building is slightly elevated compared to the other parts, which gives it a certain rhythm and dignity. A very characteristic feature is also the Mansard roof, which is typical of its specific inclination and shape. This detail of the roof construction gives the whole building an elegant look and distinguishes it from ordinary buildings in the surroundings.

Who was the author of this project? The architect and builder Otakar Nypl is responsible for the design. Nypl wasn't just an ordinary designer, he was a man with a great sense of space and aesthetics. His abilities were strengthened by working with one of the most important architects of his time, Dusan Jurkovic. Although the building is walled and is robust, its design embodies the influence of the time when the balance between functionality and beauty was sought. Thanks to this quality, the building has been protected as a cultural monument since 2000. It is a recognition that this school is not just a place for teaching, but a real work of art that has value for all of us.

When we think about people who were connected to this building, it comes to mind for example Josef Schejbal. The history of the school is made up of thousands of small stories of pupils and teachers who spent their days here, learning to read, write and learn the world. Imagine the generations of children that passed through here, their laughter in the halls and their silence in the library. This building was for many of them the first window to the wider world.

What's interesting is how powerful this building reflects its time. It is fascinating to realize that 13 years have passed between the beginning of the foundation and the actual start of operation. It is a long time during which the world has changed, empires have died and new states have been created, but this school has remained here as a fixed point. Being protected today as a cultural monument means that future generations will be able to admire the same details that you see right now.

Feel the atmosphere of this place. You're standing in front of a building that survived the war, the economic crisis and the regime changes. It's a symbol of stability and awareness. Her massive walls have been keeping secrets for decades. Although we may see the school today as a practical building, in the context of Little Svatonovice it is a real architectural jewel that defines the character of the whole village.

Imagine what it must have been like when the door opened for the first time in the year of the ninth 27th and the children entered these spaces. It was a new era. Today, school is no longer just a educational facility, but it is an important element of the landscape that encourages us to think about how important it is to take care of our common heritage.

Now I'm going to invite you to take a closer look at the building. Walk around it, see its dimensions and explore how the roof meets the sky. Try to imagine what the town looked like when this building was the most modern object in the area. It's a beautiful moment to stop in time.

Thank you for spending a moment with us at this beautiful monument. We hope you're interested in the story of Jirásek's school and that you're leaving with a new look at this building. Now you can continue to explore other beautiful corners of the Little Svatonovice. We wish you a pleasant journey and a wonderful experience while exploring this region. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is late spring or autumn, when the colors of the surrounding nature are in contrast to the massive brick construction from 1925. The building is available by car and public transport; Check the current connection in the search engine.

For a visit we recommend taking shoes suitable for walking around the village. Since it is a building in operation, we recommend to maintain calm and respect ongoing teaching or official operation.

For the best photos we recommend using the morning or afternoon light, which best stands out the rectangular shape of the object and the facade details designed by Otakar Nyple. The most interesting views are from the street level, where the size of the building is visible.

Families with children can use a visit to tell about the history of education in the early twentieth century and to observe the architecture that arose in cooperation with the important creators of the time.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surrounding area of the building awakens to life and the young greenery are accompanied by fresh air. The sun lights the facade gently in the morning, which is the perfect time for outdoor photography. We recommend shoes suitable for wet soil and a light wind jacket.

In the summer months the landscape is dominated by rich green shade and intense lighting. The atmosphere is warm and calm, with the shade of nearby trees providing relief. The best is to visit the place in the early morning or late evening hours when the least heat is, and choose light, breathtaking clothes.

Autumn brings colored leaves to the surroundings and a misty wound that gives the building a mysterious touch. Light is softer and golden, which highlights the details of architecture. It is advisable to choose layered clothes and waterproof shoes to make the visit pleasant even in dry weather.

Zimą is usually a landscape covered with snow and silence, which creates contrast with the coloured walls of the building. Short days mean the best visibility is around noon. Hot clothes, layering and quality winter shoes are essential to avoid cooling during walking around the building.
