Sloup Nejsvětější Trojice (Chomutov) Plague column
The column of the Holy Trinity in Chomutov is a baroque pestilence column from 1697, which stands in May 1. This monument represents an important example of baroque art and since 1958 it has been protected as a cultural monument.
The base stone of the column was laid on 16 July 1697 in the presence of the President of the Jesuit College Johannes Hanke. The foundation of the husband and Elizabeth Judith Wolf was dedicated to his work while Ambrož Laurentis was the author. The creation of the building is connected with the expansion of Jesuit influence in Central Europe and the highest popularity of Baroque architecture.
The construction consists of a wooden column built on a double prism pedestal. The column ends with a composite Corinthian warhead decorated with angels over which the two-sided sculpture of the Holy Trinity is placed. The peak views are made up of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary on the right hand side and the holy Anna on the left. The other side is St. Joseph with a book, above them is God the Father and in the form of a dove the Holy Spirit.
The base is decorated with four sandstone statues made by Tobias Seiberger in 1719. They are St. John Nepomukki, St. John the Baptist, St. Rosalie and St. Catherine. The Wolf family paid 91 gold and 30 tailors for these jobs. The statues were painted with oil colours in their original form.
Between 1725 and 1732, the balustrations and seven statues of saints with two whitelighters were added, created by the Egyptian sculptor Jan Oswald. St. Florian and St. Viktor are placed on the balustard as the patrons of the city, Saint Francis the Xaversky as the patron saint of the Jesuit college, and Saint John, Saint Linhart, Saint Roch and Saint Wenceslas. The total cost of making a balustrad with statues was 150 gold pieces.
The column originally stood in the center of the square. In 1962 during the process the restaurant was moved to the northwest part of the square. Ladislav Pícha, Stanislav Hanzl and František Rada participated in the restoration of the monument.
Today Column The Holy Trinity is the dominant square of May 1 in Chomutov. It is accessible to the public and represents a valuable historical document of the Baroque era. This monument is an important stop for anyone interested in the sacral architecture and history of the city.

Seasonal recommendations
In the spring of the Column of the Holy One The threesome is surrounded by awakening nature and fresh air. The soft morning light will highlight the details of baroque cutting in stone. We recommend to wear more layers of clothing because the weather is usually variable, and to visit the memory in the morning when it is quiet in the city centre.
The summer season brings sharp sun and rich colors that create deep shadows in the folds of statues. The atmosphere is full of energy and urban rush. Due to high temperatures and more people, it's best to come first thing in the morning. Don't forget light clothes and plenty of drinking water.
In autumn, the space around the pillars of golden leaves and morning fog gives the place a mysterious touch. At this time, the light is softer and more pleasant to observe architecture. Suitable is waterproof clothes and a visit in the afternoon when the sun falls to the horizon.
In winter the monument is very dramatic, especially if it is covered by white snow, which strongly contrasts with the dark surface of the pillar. The whole area has a quiet atmosphere, especially in advent time. It is necessary to have warm shoes, hat and gloves and count on a very short day.
