The statue of the Virgin Mary Immaculata in the village Holohlavy is a Baroque sandstone monument dating back to around 1740. It originated in the famous workshop of Matthias Braun and forms an important landscape dominant. It is located on the spot On the pews under the lipas by the pavement connecting Smiřice with the Holo-Head Church of St. John the Baptist. Together with the statue of St. John Nepomuk, it creates a view landscape pair and is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic under the number ÚSKP 34338 / 6-607.

The creation of the statue was related to the highest Baroque in Czech countries, influenced by Catholic reCatholics. At that time, there were wars on Austrian heritage in Europe, which also affected Czech territory after Mary Teresa took the throne. There is nothing to confess about the old fate of the statue or its owners in available sources.

On the art side, the statue is carved from sandstone by a characteristic top Baroque, connected with the Matyas Braun circuit. It stands on two stone stages and a triangular pedestal decorated with volutes, tassels and a tense ledge. Detailed processing of the drapery of the garment and embossing of the base are the authors of the Brauna workshop. On the front side of the pedestal there is a relief of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, depicting Mary kneeling at the counter with a book and above her angel with a halo and dove. The figure of the Lady of Life stands on a plinth with the decorative inscription MARIA, trampling the head of the serpent and has a metal halo with twelve stars.

There is a statue of St. John Nepomuk in the vicinity, which together with Mary's statue forms the said landscape dominant. No other dramatic events or changes in ownership structure will be reported.

Today the monument is freely accessible on site On the pews beneath the lime, fulfilling the role of an important landscape element. The tour of the statue offers a meeting with the authentic work of the high baroque and is a valuable goal for interested people in the Czech cultural heritage.

Welcome to the village Holohlavy. You've just stopped at a place that carries deep peace and incredible power of history. You are standing in the location On the pegs and right in front of you, in the open landscape, a statue that has been watching over this place for nearly 300 years. Look at her and try to forget the rush of today's world for a moment. Feel the presence this character radiates. It's a statue of the Virgin Mary Immaculate, and her presence here is not random. It is a work that has been created to inspire amazement in people and to shape the face of this country.

Now that you're looking at it, you might wonder how this stone was worked. This statue is a baroque sandstone, which means it comes from around 17 hundred forty. That was the era when art sought to move, to emotions and to make the viewer feel like part of something greater than ordinary reality. This statue is not just a stone cast, it is the result of work in one of the most important workshops of the time. Although the exact name of the craftsman who carved this piece is not in our records, we know with certainty that this work comes from the incredibly famous workshop of Master Matthias Braun. Braun's workshop was the pinnacle of everything about artistic expression in stone at that time. Work from this circle bears the signs of the highest quality and deep understanding of human form.

Now let's look together at the details that you have right in front of you. Note that the statue is life-size. This gives her a special human dimension, yet she seems noble and otherworldly. Feel the texture of sandstone, which is so typical of our landscape. Look at what the Virgin Mary has under her feet. It stands on the globe, a symbol that links it to the whole world and its infinity. And you'll see the head of a snake under her feet. This detail is very important because it represents the victory of good over evil, purity over sin. It's a powerful image that every human being could understand immediately at the time.

Now lift your eyes to her head. Notice how the metal halo shines around her. It's a beautiful element that contrasts with matte sandstone. This halo is decorated with twelve stars that are distributed to form a circle of light around the face. This detail gives the whole character a sacred touch and attracts attention to her face.

Now pay attention to what this entire composition stands on. The statue is not placed directly on the ground, but stands on two stone steps. These degrees form the foundation and separate the sacred figure from the normal path. The whole statue rests on a triangular pedestal. If you look at it closely, you'll see it's decorated with shapes called volutes. These curves, which resemble rolled leaves or waves, provide the whole base with dynamics and elegance, which is typical of baroque style.

But this statue is not a lonely element in this landscape. It's a very significant landscape dominant. It means that even when you look at her from a distance, she determines the character of the whole neighborhood. It's the point where the eyes go back. Moreover, if you look towards the neighboring places, you will find that this statue is an important whole along with the neighbouring statue of St. John Nepomuk. These two statues lead an invisible dialogue in space and form the pillars of this place together.

You may be wondering how valuable this work is to all of us. It's not just beauty, it's history that we have to protect. This statue is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It has its own official character and number, which confirms its necessity for our common heritage. It's proof that even a small piece like this in the landscape can be of great value to the whole country.

If you look around now, try to imagine the people who stood here hundreds of years ago. Imagine how people looked at this statue at the time of its creation, how the sun hit it in seventeen hundred forty and how it changed with every year. This statue has survived for centuries, survived many changes in the landscape and in human life, yet it still stands here, firm and dignified.

I hope that this brief moment at the statue of the Virgin Mary Immaculata has helped you better understand and perceive it. Don't forget to look again at the fine details on the pedestal and the stars in its halo. Every detail has meaning. But now I'm going to sound you for further examination. Continue your journey, discover the beauty of our landscape and enjoy the peace this place offers you. Thank you for your visit and we will wait you out again on the next discovery of history. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon. The sun gently illuminates the sandstone surface of the Baroque statue in these hours, highlighting the details of its working and the natural colour of the stone.

The location is available by car and by public transport; Check the current connection in the search engine. We recommend shoes suitable for walking on rural roads because the statue is located near the sidewalk in the landscape.

When shooting, focus on the details of the face and hands of the Virgin Mary. The best angles can be obtained from a low perspective that highlights the life-size of the work from Braun's workshop and its nobility.

In the immediate vicinity you can visit the neighbouring historical statue of St. John Nepomuk. A long walk will take you down the pavement towards the church of St. John the Baptist in Holohlav or the town of Smiřice.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring in the village Holohlavy brings awakening nature, when the surrounding trees begin to bloom and the fine rays of the sun pleasantly irradiate the bright stone of the statue of the Virgin Mary Immaculata. The atmosphere is calm and thoughtful, ideal for morning or morning walks. There are no crowds of tourists here, so you can view the detailed decoration of the monument in peace anytime during the day.

The summer in this public area is characterized by sharp midday light and long sunny days, which make all artistic details of the sculpture stand out. For a summer visit, choose early morning hours or late evening, when the sun falls warmly to the horizon and creates beautiful shadows. Don't forget your sunglasses, headgear and a bottle of water, because there has been a direct heat here since summer without a natural shade roof.

Autumn in Holohlavů offers a melancholy mood, underscored by falling colored leaves from surrounding trees and frequent morning fog covering the entire village. The lighting is muffled, soft and creates a unique atmosphere for the photography of historical art. In this period, warmer waterproof clothes and solid footwear are recommended, as the sidewalks are wet from dew and occasional rain. It is best to plan the visit for noon, when the fog usually dissolves and the daylight becomes stronger for a while.

Winter gives this place a quiet and clean face, especially when the snow cover covers the surrounding landscape and contrasts with a darker stone of the monument. The lighting is very short, it is soon getting dark, but in bright weather the snow reflects an interesting natural brightness. Very warm winter clothes, hats, gloves and high-quality shoes with non-slip soles are essential for the winter tour outside. The best time for a tour is an early afternoon when there is the best chance of at least a partial brightening of the sky.
