The Baroque sandstone column from 1737-1739 is located in the heart of the Peace Square in the district city Ústí nad Orlicí. This monument was built as a sign of faith and prayer for protection against plague epidemics, famine and wars. Since 1958 it has been protected as a real-estate cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The current column replaced an older object, which only a few reports in regional literature have survived. The construction took place between 1737 and 1739, when Baroque art with rich ornament and dramatic expression affected Bohemia, which led to the development of many similar Marian columns as symbols of religious devotion.

The whole object is made of sandstone. The base consists of six steps arranged into a square, in their corners there are eight-sided columns connected by a metal chain. Inside this space stands a low prism base with a pillar decorated with four volutes and a profiled ledge. On the pillar are carved Latin inscriptions with chronograms from 1737.

At the top of the ledge there is a high pillar with Corinthian head in which the heads of angels are drawn. The peak consists of a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary Immaculata. The figure stands on the crescent moon and a snake with its right foot bent and clenched hands, its head surrounded by a halo composed of twelve stars. Originally, the column was surrounded by stone railing.

In 2015 the Marian column underwent a total renovation. Historically, it symbolized the protection of the population from disasters, as is confirmed by the inscriptions on the pillar, such as the Western Party, asking for liberation from the plague, hunger and war.

Today the surroundings of the park are decorated and supplemented with rich flower decoration. The monument represents an important element of the urban character of the Peace Square and a demonstration of baroque sculpture in the region.

The Marian column in Ústí nad Orlicí is a valuable testament to the period faith and artistic taste of the 18th century. It's a place worth visiting while walking through the city centre.

Welcome to the heart of Ústí nad Orlicí. Right now, you are facing one of the most important and beautiful symbols of this place, which has dominated the surroundings for centuries and tells the story of faith, hope and human fragility. Before your eyes is a baroque Marian pillar, a monumental work of sandstone that carries the soul of the whole city. Feel the atmosphere of this place, feel the calm that radiates this stone, even if the world can move around you. This column is not just a sculpture piece, it's a record of history that stands here as a witness to many generations.

Let us return together to the time when this column was created to understand why it is so important here at all. Imagine the eighteenth century, a time when human existence was much more uncertain than today. In the years of a thousand seven hundred thirty-seven to a thousand seven hundred thirty-nine this building was born here. People were looking not only for beauty at the time, but mostly for protection. They lived in constant fear of invisible enemies that could come at any time. It could have been a plague epidemic that took lives without warning, it could have been a famine that exhausted entire families, or wars that brought destruction and unrest. So this column was built as a great stone prayer. It was a symbol of piety and an expression of deep pleas for protection for the whole city and its inhabitants. Every cut into the sandstone was a sign of faith that this monument would help people to endure the darkest times.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself and look at the details you have right in front of you. The whole object is made of sandstone, a material that is fragile but can also preserve beauty for centuries. Look down at the base. See those six sandstone steps? These degrees form a solid foundation that leads your eyesight up. Between these steps you will see eight pillars that are interconnected by a metal chain. This element gives the whole piece some weight and closure, as if the column held everything near it in a protective embrace. As soon as you look up, you'll hit a Corinthian warhead. It is a typical symbol of baroque style, which with its wealth and decoration expresses nobility and dignity. And finally, at the very top, in the crown of the whole work, the statue of the Virgin Mary Immaculata stands. It's her, the tallest figure to be the protector of this place and all the people who will stop by.

Notice how this monument connects with the history of the city and in the New Testament. This column was not only a fleeting monument, but it became a solid part of the identity of this region. Already in the year one thousand nine hundred fifty-eight it was recognized by its immense value and declared a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic. That means his protection is our responsibility. Even in recent years, the whole city has taken care of it, as demonstrated by the total renovation that took place in a thousand seven hundred twenty-fifteen years. Thanks to this care, the column can still look beautiful and remind us of its history even in modern times.

Now, if you look a little closer to the pillar, you might encounter something very interesting. There are Latin inscriptions carved there. But these are not just words. These are so-called chronographs from the year one thousand seven hundred thirty-seven. For some, it may only look like a series of characters, but for experts, it's a hidden code. These inscriptions contain figures that refer to the year when the construction began to be carried out. It's like a mysterious message from the creators trying to leave a trail of time right in the stone. This little detail shows how much people at the time cared about making their work not only beautiful, but also accurately recorded for future generations.

You're standing here in front of something much bigger than a stone statue. You stand before the symbol of the human struggle for survival, the prayer that has frozen in the sandstone, and the proof of how much people need to protect and connect. Whether it's his Baroque elegance or his historical weight, this column is for you to remind you of the roots of this city.

I hope this brief view of the Marian pillar has enriched you. Now that you know his story, you can go ahead and explore the beautiful city of Ústí nad Orlicí. Every alley and every square here has its own story waiting for you to discover it. I wish you a nice walk and many other interesting experiences. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the pillar surrounds the awakening greenery and fine light that highlights the details of the stone. It's a time of freshness and a new beginning in urban space. I recommend wearing more layers of clothing because spring weather is very variable. It is best to visit the memory in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

The summer season brings sharp sun and rich colors around. The atmosphere is playful and full of energy, typical of the high season. Due to high temperatures, select light and breathable substances. To keep the sun from burning you, look for the perfect time early in the morning or in the evening when the light is softer and there are fewer people on the streets.

In autumn, the surroundings turn into golden shades, and morning fog gives the statue a mysterious touch. Nature is slowly falling asleep and the mood is rather calm and melancholy. Don't forget the waterproof shoes and the warm sweater. For the best views, choose the late afternoon when the sun paints the landscape in orange.

In winter, white snow acts as a natural frame that highlights the shape of the Marian pillar. The atmosphere is quiet, freezing and very clean. It is necessary to wear a warm coat, hat and gloves. I recommend a short walk in the Advent time, when evening lighting of the city creates a cosy contrast to the cold.
