Socha svatého Jana Nepomuckého (Branky) Statue
The statue of St. John Nepomuk in the village of Branky in the district of Vsetín is a Baroque sandstone sculpture from 1734. Since 1993 it has been protected as a cultural monument and represents an important element of the original sacral ensemble in the centre of the village.
The building was created in 1734 with the cost of the keeper of the Brno Lének Maximilian Josef Knights Lackner of Lackenau. Originally there was a statue in the centre of the village where the Church of Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary grew later in 1785. St. John Nepomuk's sculpture was not independent. It was part of a wider ensemble, including the sculpture of Jan Sarkander and the statue of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Anthony of Paduan.
From the point of view of implementation it is a sandstone sculpture on a high pedestal with a profiled ledge. The front side shall carry the coat of arms of the Lackner family from Lackenau and the initials ML VL 34 which refer to the fundator and the year of origin. The whole base is laid on a low-profile plinth. The saint is depicted as a bearded man in a traditional garment with a biret on his head. The figure stands on the clouds, holding the metal cross in the right hand and in the left palm branch. Typologically this work corresponds to the non-ponic statues in Rajnochovice, Přerov or Lhotce near Hranice. Until the 1930s, the original sculpture was decorated with polychromia.
The fate of the goal sculpture was variable over time. While the statue of St. John Nepomuk remained in place, the sculptures of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Anthony of Paduan had to be buried by the church wall in 1887 because of the considerable evasiveness. There was a fundamental change in 1996; The original was moved to the interior of the Brno church for protection. A faithful replica from the workshop of academic sculptor Miroslav Machala was installed at the original site at the same time. The original base was preserved in the parish yard, but the coat of arms is almost undetectable due to the weather.
Today the monument is available in the form of a replica in the area of the village and the original in the interior of the church. The building provides insight into the baroque art and history of the local noble family. Visiting this place allows you to observe the continuity of sacral architecture on a small scale.
