Společenský dům ve Františkových Lázních Fortress
Společenský dům ve Františkových Lázních, located on National 1 / 12 in the municipality of Františkovy Lázně, district Cheb, Karlovarský kraj, is the first public object from the time of the foundation of the spa town. This architecturally and urbanistically important complex located in the central part of the city monument reservation represents a classicist building founded in 1793 and completed in 1795. Its history is closely linked to the development of spa centres in France and Europe, where Františkovy Lázně has become a popular place for nobles and rich citizens.
The formation of the Social House is connected to the beginning of the spa town, when the construction land was divided on 12 July 1792 and one of them was intended for its construction. The foundation stone of the Classicist building was laid on 27 August 1793, which opened the way to opening the spa in 1794 and completing the rough construction as well as the interior equipment in 1795. The original plans for construction were prepared by Thobias Gruber and Ing. Johann Rothhesel z Brandýsa nad Labem, who designed a complex of two buildings with an inn, dance hall and other social spaces.
The Social House architecture has undergone several transformations over the years. Originally, the house was a classical building, which served as a social centre with an inn and a dance hall. In 1876-1877 there was a significant change when the Neo-Renaissance building was built according to the design by Gustav Wiedermann. This building redesigned the overall appearance of the complex and gave it a monumental character with rich stucco decoration, a necke dome and a two-story "Conversion Hall." After the fire in 1904, repairs were made and in 1984 the house underwent reconstruction.
The ownership of the Social House has changed over the years. Originally belonged to the city of Cheb, which built it and subsequently owned it. In 1874, Cheba bought the building from the city of Františkovy Lázně, which was related to the development of spa centres as a world-class. This change of ownership has led to further development and reconstruction of the building.
The social house was the meeting place of several important personalities such as Johann Wolfgang Goethe, pruský maršál Blücher, hrabě Nostic and hrabě Kašpar Šternberk. These visits highlight the historical importance of the building as places of social meetings and cultural life.
Today Společenský dům ve Františkových Lázních is a place where various events and concerts are held. In the original hall, Goethe restaurant was decorated in French style, while various events take place in the large hall. In 2025 the cafe opened in the premises of the original inn and plans to reopen the restaurant are in progress. The city museum should also move into the building, which further increases its cultural and historical importance.
Společenský dům ve Františkových Lázních is not only an architectural monument, but also a place of rich history and culture. His visit offers a view of the history of the spa town and its development, which makes the object not only interesting for historians, but also for any traveler curious about the history of the region.

The Společenský dům is the first public building in the history of Františkovy Lázně and at the same time the most important public building of the city from the period of the spa's foundation. It stands in the center of the city's heritage conservation area. In its beginnings, it was simply called the Lázeňský dům.
The construction of the spa began on July twelfth, seventeen ninety-two with the division of building plots. One of nineteen plots was designated precisely for the Společenský dům. The foundation stone of the Classical style building was laid on August twenty-seventh, seventeen ninety-three. In seventeen ninety-four the shell construction was completed and the interior furnishings began. The building was opened only in seventeen ninety-five. Its completion during the reign of Emperor František Prvního is commemorated by the oldest commemorative plaque in the city, located on the northern wall of the building. The city of Cheb had the building constructed according to the plans of Thobias Gruber and Johann Rothhesел from Brandýs nad Labem.
Originally it consisted of two buildings. On the ground floor of the main building was an inn with the innkeeper's apartment. On the first floor was a small assembly hall and parlors with a billiard room. On the second floor the spa inspector had an apartment and office. In the ground floor building was a large hall where breakfasts, lunches and dinners were served at a communal table. Dances and balls were held there, which were then considered a social therapeutic cure. The hall was among the most magnificent in Bohemia. Among the guests of the house were Johann Wolfgang Goethe in eighteen oh-eight, Prussian marshal Blücher and Count Nostic in eighteen sixteen and Count Kašpar Šternberk in eighteen thirty-seven.
In eighteen seventy-four the Společenský dům along with the old colonnade was purchased from Cheb by the city of Františkovy Lázně. The spa was then becoming a world-class spa, and therefore the city council had a new, even larger hall built. It was created between eighteen seventy-six and eighteen seventy-seven according to the design of Gustav Wiedermann as a monumental Neo-Renaissance building. It has rich stucco decoration, a veranda with a colonnade, a terrace on the upper floor and a typical barrel vault dome, which was meant to emphasize the grand-city scale. Inside is a two-story Konverzační sál with large chandeliers. The new building overshadowed the older part of the complex and became the new dominant feature of the spa. After a fire in nineteen oh-four it was repaired and in nineteen eighty-four it underwent reconstruction.
In the original hall later functioned the Goethe restaurant in the French style, on the first floor until the end of two thousand eighteen a casino. The large hall serves for social events and concerts. In two thousand twenty-five a café returned to the spaces of the original inn. The municipal museum is to be moved to the former casino in the future.

Seasonal recommendations
Spring: In the spring, Františkovy Lázně awakens into life and the surrounding parks begin to bloom, creating a fresh and optimistic atmosphere. The light is softer in this period and ideal for capturing the details of the architecture of the social house. We recommend wearing layered clothes because the weather can be variable. The advantage is a smaller number of visitors compared to the summer months, which allows you to enjoy a quieter tour.
Summer: The summer season brings to the spa town the most excitement, bright sunlight and a lively atmosphere full of people. The social house is at this time surrounded by heat and rust, which is typical of the main summer period. Due to the larger crowds, it is best to arrive early in the morning or in the morning to enjoy the space without too much hustle. Don't forget light summer clothes and sun protection.
Autumn: Autumn moons offer a nostalgic and calm atmosphere where parks are colored in golden and brown shades. The morning mist gives the place a Tajimen touch and the light at sunset is very warm. For walking around the sights it is advisable to carry a warmer jacket and comfortable shoes, because the roads can be wet. It's the perfect time for those who seek silence and contemplation.
Winter: In winter, historic buildings are very majestic and peaceful in a freezing environment. Short days and cooler air create a cozy atmosphere, especially if you move into the inner space. It is essential to prepare for strong winter clothes and shoes with good insulation. In advent time and during freezing days, consider that the surrounding area may be less busy, but we recommend that you check any changes in operation in advance.
