Štencův dům Building complex
Štencův dům is a significant Art Nouveau building in Prague 1, which was established between 1909 and 1911. Originally served as the most modern printing house in Austria-Hungary. It connected the residential part with the graphic race, today there is a coworking and social centre.
The building in Salvatorska Street was built at the expense of the publisher and owner of the printer Jan Štence. Its construction was perhaps thanks to Prague's rendering, which was one of the largest urban events in the world. The aim of this project was to remove the hygienically unsatisfactory parts of the Old Town and the Jewish City, which were commercially unusable. They were replaced by new representative buildings and expanded streets. It was on one of these plots Jan Štenc built his house.
The project was developed by architect Otakar Novotný, pupil of Jan Kotěra. The building is built in the style of modern Art Nouveau and radically connects the housing and industrial function. The building had apartments of the family Stence, office, camera, graphic plant and representative premises of the company. The facade of the concrete masonry bears the influence of Dutch architecture, which Novotný took over during his study stay in the Netherlands. The facade ends with a characteristic quarter studio window. The whole complex with two doors contrasts significantly with the embellished stucco decoration of the surrounding buildings. The builders Karel Schandl and Matej Blecha participated in the construction.
At the time of its flowering, the house was the center of social and artistic life. In its bright and airy interiors there were important creators, such as Max Švabinský, Jan Štursa or Jan Kotěra. From the graphic studio Jan Štence, who was also the managing director of the Society of Fine Artists Mánes, the top art publications and fundamental works of Czech history were based.
Property ownership changed in times. After the death of the founder in 1947, the house was transferred to the administration of the state enterprise Knihprinting and Printing. During this period, there were several inconsiderate interventions, which caused the then conflicting relationship with secession and cubism. After 1989 the building returned to the heirs of Jan Štence as part of the restitution. In the mid-1990s, a deep reconstruction of the interblock took place, where Wella's beauty centre was subsequently located. Later, the building was used for short-term rentals and served as a film location, for example for the Mamon series.
Since 2016, the building has been rented by Opero. In the former premises of printers and graphic workshops, the business of mushrooms and coworking center was established. The building is owned by the founder's granddaughter, Viola Skabradova. The reconstruction of 2016, the author of which was the architect Mária Manin, was intended to return the original industrial character. The plasterboard extension from the 1990s was removed, revealing the original structure. The interior preserved elements from the beginning of the 20th century, including entrance in the yard. New worktables were designed in the style of original printing equipment.
Štencův dům presents a unique example of early modernism and Art Nouveau in the centre of Prague. It is a valuable reminder of the blossom of Czech book printing and urban changes in the historical heart of the city. The visit to this building offers an insight into the architecture of Otakar Novotný and the atmosphere of the then art milieu.

Welcome to the heart of Prague, one of its most important neighborhoods. You are standing in front of a building that tells the story of ambition, modern technology and the high art of the early twentieth century, both in its form and history. Look at this impressive house, which now welcomes you with its stability and elegance. It is a building that combines practical function with aesthetic value, and even though a modern city is flowing around you today, this house still carries the spirit of the time when Prague was turning into a true world capital.
Now let's stop at how this house actually came into being and why it's even standing here. To understand that, we must return to flights of thousands of nine hundred nine to thousands of nine hundred eleven. At that time in Prague, one of the largest urban events the world had ever seen was the so-called Prague rendering. This was an extensive rehabilitation and reconstruction of the city centre, which removed old, often inappropriate buildings to create new, wider streets and modern buildings corresponding to hygienic and aesthetic demands of the time. It was under this great plan that Štencův dům was created. It was built at its own expense by the major publisher Jan Štenc. His vision was to create a space that was not just an ordinary house, but a real centre of printing and culture.
Now pay attention to the architecture itself. The building was designed by the renowned architect Otakar Novotný, which combined functionality with the modern style of Art Nouveau. Look carefully at the facade. Note that it is made of solid masonry. If you think about the detail, you will see in this version the influences of Dutch architecture, which was a very fresh and different approach for Prague. Watch the facade line upwards, where the whole building is finished with a quarter aetika, which is the decorative ending of the upper wall, which gives the building its characteristic profile and closes it into a harmonious whole.
But if we look deeper, we find that Štencův dům was not just a beautiful vessel. Originally served as the most modern printing house in all of Austria-Hungary. Imagine what a fascinating combination it must have been. In one building, there was a residential area where people lived, with representative spaces and mainly with graphic events. It was basically a printing machine for books and magazines that worked right in the center of town. It is this combination that has made it the center of social and intellectual life. In the interiors, the leading artists of their time met. For example, there were Max Švabinský, Jan Štursa or Jan Kotěra. It was a meeting place for thinkers, where, in the noisy environment of printing machines and in the silence of elegant salons, top art publications were born, which then influenced the whole Czech culture.
Here we come to one of the most interesting facts about this place. Imagine that at the time of its creation, this house was the highlight of technical progress. The fact that he was the state-of-the-art printing house within the vast Austrian-Hungarian region suggests the courage and visionalism of Jan Štence. It wasn't just business, it was the desire to create space where technology meets art. It is fascinating to think that a building that was created in the context of a massive city change such as sanitation managed to survive so elegantly for decades and still fulfil its role in the urban tissue of Prague.
But time passes and the needs of the city change. After many years, namely in the year two thousand and sixteen, there was another significant change. The building was rented to Opero and was subsequently renovated. Nowadays, printing machines no longer work in the building, but they serve as a centre for joint sharing of workspace, which is known as coworking. It is basically a modern continuation of Jan Stence's original idea. While printing and painters once met here, today people from different disciplines are meeting here looking for inspiration and space for their creativity and work. The spirit of cooperation and creation remained in the building, only changed its form from paper and ink to digital technology and modern communication.
Now if you look again at Štencův dům, think of it as a bridge between two worlds. On the one hand it is a monument to Art Nouveau architecture and printing craft from the beginning of the century, on the other hand it is a living space for the people of today. This is proof that quality architecture and a smart urban plan can serve people even after more than a hundred years if they are treated with respect and care.
Thank you for stopping by this beautiful building. I hope the story of John Stence and his house inspired you to take note of the details in other buildings you pass by every day. I now invite you to further explore the area. Go through the rest of the street, see the atmosphere of Prague 1 and be guided by curiosity. I wish you a pleasant continuation of your journey around our beautiful city. Goodbye.
Tips for visitors
The best time to visit is morning or late afternoon when the sun hits the facade at an angle that best excels the details of Art Nouveau architecture. The building is available by car and public transport; Check the current connection in the search engine.
We recommend taking a high-quality camera to visit. The best pictures are taken from the street level, where you can capture the total height and decorating the house. Watch the light game on the surface of the walls, which highlights the geometric shapes of the construction.
Because it is a building in operation, we recommend to visitors to respect the quiet in place and concentrate on observing the exterior. Families with children can use a walk to explain what the printing works looked like in the early twentieth century.
Around the building is the centre of Prague, where other historical buildings and architectural styles can be discovered within a short time span.

Seasonal recommendations
In spring, the surroundings of the building awaken to life, and the sunlight gently hits the facade. It is advisable to choose the morning time when the light is clean and the air is fresh. We recommend a light spring of clothes and comfortable shoes for walking through the historical centre.
In the summer months it dominates areas of intense heat and bright lighting, which highlights the details of the construction. The best thing is to visit a place in the early hours of the morning to avoid the greatest heat and the greatest number of people on the streets. Don't forget the hat and enough water.
Autumn brings golden leaves to the streets and melancholy atmosphere accompanied by more frequent fog. The ideal is the late afternoon when the low sun creates deep shadows. It is suitable for layered clothing and waterproof jacket in case of severe weather change.
Zimą makes a monument in a cool, blue light and in advent time in the surroundings the expectations of the holidays prevail. We recommend a visit at noon when daylight is longest. Hot winter clothes, gloves and firm soles are essential to avoid slipping on the frozen surface.
