Štetkovice is a chateau in the village of Sedlčan in the district of Příbram, located in the Central Bohemia region. It is a cultural monument, whose area deserves the attention of those who are looking for authentic traces of local history and архitektur changes of Czech nobility.

Now the monument dates back to the end of the sixteenth century when it was part of the Kosovo estate. The breakthrough moment for its development came in 1670, when the village with its property bought Jakub Pecelius z Adlersheimu and made Štětkovice the centre of its small estate. The chateau itself was supposed to be founded in the seventeenth or eighteenth century, with local traditions and signs of building history indicating that it was perhaps standing on the site of an older fortress. The following centuries have brought a frequent rotation of owners - typical of aristocratic settlements of this size.

The crucial point in the eighteenth century was the year 1787 when Franz Müller bought the property from Josef Lipovský z Lipovice. His family will keep Stetkovice until 1873 - almost a hundred years. The owner changed again: in the 1970s he owned the castle Karel Skal, since 1880 he owned the castle Leopold Pollak. Pollak's family tragically lost their property during the revision of the first land reform, the transformation of Czech society after the First World War. In the second half of the twentieth century, the chateau was transformed into part of a state farm where it served economic needs.

From an architectural point of view, Štetkovice is a single-storey building with a rectangular plan and a characteristic central risalita - a simple but harmonious form which notably reflects the efforts of the Czech lesser nobility to be representative without excessive grandeur. The chateau stands on the southern edge of the economic court, from which it probably once radiated its authority over the surrounding property. Economic buildings have changed over the years, some have died, but their memories persist. The original complex has been preserved in the form of protected buildings mainly by a hoarder and a former brewery, which is interestingly located on the opposite side of the pond.

The chateau area is not only a building remnant - it is also composed of the remnants of a wall with a gate, a historically important pond and an adjacent park, which create a comprehensive picture of the former mansion. Due to the designation as a cultural monument, Štetkovice is a protected statement about the transformation of Czech society, from the noble ambitions to the буржoasis administration to the socialist economy. For the visitor they represent a self-evident insight into the period when such a residence was determined by the face of the Czech village.

Štětkovice Castle stands in the village of the same name near Sedlčany in the Příbram region. Its complex is protected as a cultural monument.

Since the end of the sixteenth century, Štětkovice belonged to the Kosovohory estate. In sixteen seventy, it was purchased by Jakub Pecelius of Adlersheim, who made it the center of a small independent manor. The castle, which served as his noble residence, was founded in the seventeenth or eighteenth century, possibly on the site of an older fortress.

The owners changed frequently afterward. In seventeen eighty-seven, Josef Lipovský of Lipovice bought the castle from František Müller, and it remained in his descendants' hands until eighteen seventy-three. After that, it was owned by Karel Skal, and from eighteen eighty onward, by Leopold Pollak. The Pollak family lost the castle during the review of the first land reform. In the second half of the twentieth century, the castle served the state farm.

The castle is a single-story building with a rectangular ground plan. From the middle of its façade, a central section projects slightly, which is called a risalit. It stands on the southern edge of the farmyard. Part of the buildings from the farmyard have not survived, and only the granary and the former brewery, which stands on the opposite side of the pond, are protected as monuments. The castle complex also includes remains of a perimeter wall with a gate, the pond itself, and an adjoining park.

Tips for visitors

For the best visual experience we recommend a visit in late afternoon. The sunlight in this time highlights the central risalite and rectangular floor plan of the building. It is ideal for shooting architecture to use soft light before sunset, which adds a one-story structure depth.

You can drive to the chateau or use public transport. We recommend to carry drinking water and comfortable shoes for walks on the premises.

Families with children can enjoy a quieter atmosphere of the chateau area. A walk around the pond, which is part of the complex, represents a pleasant activity for the smallest visitors and offers the possibility of a short rest in nature.

As part of a short trip you can visit the nearby village of Sedlčany. The combination of a tour of the chateau and a visit to the surrounding area offers a balanced program for everyone interested in the history of this Central Bohemian region.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring the Štětkovice Chateau wakes up together with nature. The flowering gardens and fresh greenery create a very pleasant and optimistic atmosphere. The lighting is fine during this period, which is ideal for shooting details of architecture. We recommend you take the clothes laminated, because the wounds can still be cold, while the afternoon will be pleasant heat. Visit the memory in the morning, when the air is the purest and the attendance rate is lower than in the summer months.

The summer season offers the longest days and the most intense sunlight that highlights the colors of historical facades. The chateau is surrounded by rich vegetation, which provides a pleasant shade. Don't forget light summer clothes, headgear and plenty of fluids because the sun can be very strong.

Autumn brings a melancholy and calm mood to the surroundings of the chateau. The colour palette of leaves in the surrounding parks creates a wonderful contrast to historical buildings, and morning fog adds mystery to the place. At this time, the best visit in the afternoon is when light breaks best to capture gold shades. Prepare waterproof shoes and a warmer layer of clothing because humidity and cooler air are common in this period.

Winter moons bring the greatest peace and quiet, which allows you to perceive architecture without disturbing the effects of the surrounding hustle and bustle. When snow comes, the chateau acts like a fairy tale, even if the trees are without leaves and the landscape is drier. It is necessary to expect shorter opening times and lower daylight intensity, so plan a visit around noon. It is necessary to wear very warm and wind-proof clothes for comfortable walks outside.
