The rivers served not only as a natural transport hub, but above all as a powerful defense. Whoever controlled this confluence controlled the key road in the region. That is why fortifications were created here, which was to make this place an impenetrable fortress.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself before you. If you look at the masonry, notice the material. The main part of the fortification was a brick wall. At that time, the brick was a modern and durable building material that made it possible to build faster and more stable. Within this wall, the prism towers were deployed. These rounded shapes were not random; The semi-cylindrical shape allowed a better overview and more effective defense because it eliminated blind angles that could be used by the enemy in the attack.

Today, when you look at these ruins and the remnants of the walls, let's imagine what the city looked like in its full glory. You couldn't enter the city anywhere. The fortification allowed access only to two main gates and two smaller passages, called fortnas. The gates were symbols of power and critical points of defense. Fortny then served for faster movement or for specific needs of the city. All these elements together formed a complex system which made Hradec Králové a real fortress.

This system has been passed through the test in many times of crisis. If we look into the fifteenth century, we will encounter one of the most stormy periods of Czech history, the period of Hussite wars. At this time, the fortifications were significantly strengthened. The city had to be prepared for siege and demands of a time when faith and political influence were fought. At this time, the city was under Swedish occupation. The Swedes were masters in fortification art at the time and the walls of Hradec Králové were used as their base. To ensure their dominance and security, they decided to strengthen the outer wall. During this short period, there were eight Swedish reinforcements, which were to make the walls even more resistant to possible attacks. It is fascinating to think that at one point there are traces of Czech kings, Hussite fighters and Swedish soldiers.

At that time, the buildings were often not signed by the names of specific creators, but were the result of the work of craftsmen 'guilds and strategic decisions made by monarchs.
