That is when the Church Association was founded, which was intended to build a dignified temple in this part of Prague. The people around here felt the need for a spiritual sanctuary and began to collect resources to build a church. Imagine the atmosphere at that time, the enthusiasm of the believers and the patient assembly of each crown, so that the space dedicated to Christ the King can be created. This initiative was led by Katechet Arnošt Olivá, who was the main engine of the entire collection and believed that Vysočany deserved such space.

However, the path to implementation was not easy. The believers had to deal with the city council, and it was here that one of the most interesting aspects of this building was created. The city did not want to see only a religious building in this location, but it emphasized the development of housing and urbanization. The result was an unusual compromise. The land was sold in 1929, but with a very strict condition: an apartment building had to be built in front of the church. This agreement has fundamentally affected what the monument looks like today. The church was not built as a dominant building that controls the square or street, but was essentially integrated into a city building, thereby becoming a hidden jewel.

Now that you're standing in front of the building, feel its architectural character. Svatyně Krista Krále is a weak representative of functionalism. This style, which, at the time of its creation, promoted the password form followed by the function, manifests itself in the cleanliness of the lines and the absence of unnecessary ornaments. The project was taken up by the architect Bedřich Vrzal and the construction company was responsible for the actual implementation under the management of O. Neklasil. Look at the overall composition. The functionalist sacral architecture is quite rare in the Czech environment, because religious structures have often followed traditional historical styles. But here we see the courage to be modern and simple.

Notice how the building fits into the area. It is an architecture that is inconspicuous in the everyday life of the Vysočan people. Even if it's sober from the outside, the inner space is a completely different world. If you enter, pay attention to the decoration that is the work of the true masters of your field. The important sculptor Damian Pesan and painter Zikmund Rudl enriched the inner and outer spaces. Their art gives this functionalist vessel depth and spiritual dimension. It is a fascinating contrast between the tree, modern architecture and rich, sensitive artistic processing.

The history of this place includes the names of people you wouldn't be standing by this wall today without them. In addition to the mentioned Ernest Olive, we must not forget Msgre. František Kordač, whose generous gift greatly helped to complete the construction. The height of the whole process was September 1930, when the church was ceremonially consecrated by Bishop Antonín Podlaha. Imagine the day people first gathered here to celebrate the completion of their dream together, which lasted from the foundation of the society in 1923 to the final consecration.

Now I want to invite you to a little game of observation. Look around you and try to realize what a strange situation this shrine is in. The Church of Christ the King is basically hidden in a pentagon block of tenement houses. For a common passer-by who doesn't know where to look, the building is almost invisible. The only real clue that tells you that there is a sacral space behind the walls of ordinary houses is a big sign above the entrance of the tenement house on plot six hundred and fifty-eight. It's basically an architectural mystery in the middle of town. If you don't know where to look, you'll miss the shrine.

It is also fascinating to see how the perception of this building changed over the decades. Although it was consecrated in 1930 and was important to the local community from the outset, official recognition in the form of a list of cultural monuments came only much later. It was only in October 2003. It is a reminder that some values are visible to us immediately, while others require time to be fully appreciated and recognised as a necessary part of our heritage.

This chapel is not just a building of concrete and stone, it is a monument to human endurance and ability to find compromise. It is proof that faith and modern urbanism can exist side by side, even if it means that the church must give way to the spatial claim of an apartment building. It is this stealth that today gives her some intimacy and secrets that you will not find in other monumental temples.
