The former synagogue in Podmoklech near Susice, registered under No. 55, represents a valuable historical building in the northern part of the village on the right side of the road leading to Chmelnou and Susici. She served at the service until 1899. It was then followed by its adaptation for residential purposes. Since 23 December 2015, this building is an officially registered cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The exact beginnings of construction are only mentioned in the documents that the original sacral structure was built before the end of the 19th century. Details of the builders or the specific course of the establishment of the Jewish religious community are missing in the available sources.

The architectural form of the building comes from the original shrine, which later passed through the reconstruction to live. From the outside, some old building elements, including the shapes of walled windows, have been preserved on the building, which are still visible in the surrounding wall. But nothing has been preserved from internal equipment until now.

After the end of religious use in 1899, the building was adapted for housing, thereby losing its original character and the interior lost all its facilities. The important milestone in modern history became December 23, 2015, when the synagogue was officially registered as a cultural monument.

Among the attractions in the immediate surroundings are the close proximity of historical Jewish houses. In the annex of house No. 5 near the creek in front of the bridge there were previously mikes, but there was no trace of it in the interior. In addition to the synagogue itself, there is also a separate Jewish cemetery.

Currently, the building serves as a modified building without preserved internal equipment, but with visible traces of original windows in the perimeter wall. The surrounding landscape of Šumava's foothills offers the proximity of the town of Susice and natural scenery along the streams and roads leading to Chmelna.

Visit The Podmokel allows you to see closely the preserved traces of Jewish history in the region that resemble the former form of the village. Come personally to explore this protected monument and discover the genius loci of Šumava foothills.

Welcome to our audio guide. You are standing in front of a former synagogue in Podmoklech near Susice, located in the northern part of the village on the right side of the road leading towards Chmelnou and Susici. Give a moment to this quiet place and let the atmosphere of the old days breathe upon you. In front of you is a building that may at first sight resemble an ordinary house, but it hides a deep and moving story of the local Jewish community.

Let's look into the past and remember how this building came into being. The original sacral structure of the synagogue in Podmoklech was built a year ago nineteen hundred. It served its original religious purpose, i.e. services, until the end of the nineteenth century, namely the year eighteen hundred ninety-nine. At that time the life of the village and the Jewish community was changing, so this chapter of history was closed. After the year eighteen hundred ninety-nine, a fundamental transformation followed and the building was adapted for residential purposes. People have started living a normal life here, which has radically changed the inner nature of the building. The names of architects and specific historical figures associated with the construction have not been preserved until today, but the material legacy of this place itself speaks to us all the more.

Now pay attention to the construction itself in front of you and look closely at its perimeter wall. Although nothing has been preserved from the original equipment in the interior because the inner spaces have been completely adapted for living and we are currently not looking inside, the outside will still reveal much. Some old building elements have been preserved from the outside of the building including the shapes of walled windows in the perimeter wall. In the circumference, these original features are still clear. Try to cross the walls with your eyes and notice these witnesses of the past, who, despite all the modifications and the passing time, have stayed in place and are telling about the original purpose of this building.

The key stories of this place are mainly linked to the transformation of its function. Imagine living in Underwater at the end of the nineteenth century, when the era of religious worship closed. A building that used to serve as a spiritual centre and instead of prayer became a home. This transformation into a residential building saved the building from total extinction, albeit at the cost of losing its inner sacral character.

The interesting thing that gives this place a hallmark of excellence is that the building has been officially recognised for its historical value quite recently. This happened on the twenty-third of December in the year twenty-fifteen, when the building was entered into the state list of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. By doing so, she gained the well-deserved protection and reminder of her memory value for future generations.

We hope you enjoyed stopping by the Podmokel Synagogue today. When you continue your journey along this picturesque region towards Chmelna or Susici, remember the hidden stories of places that may at first glance look inconspicuous, but in their walls is written the rich history of our ancestors. Thank you for your attention and I look forward to hearing from the next stop.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is spring or autumn, when the surrounding landscape of Šumava's foothills is the most beautiful and temperatures are pleasant for walks. In summer there may be more tourists in the village heading for Susice, while in winter access to certain parts of the village may be restricted by snow. We recommend to proceed to the monument in the morning, when the light is softer and ideal for shooting historical buildings.

If you travel by public transport, the village is available from Susice, however the frequency of connections may be lower, especially on weekends, so check the current timetable in the search engine in advance.

Take comfortable shoes with you, because the surroundings of the monument and cemetery can be uneven. We recommend to prepare drinking water and light refreshments as refreshments may not be available in the immediate vicinity of the synagogue. If you plan to take a longer walk along the surrounding streams, remember the light jacket, because the weather in the foothills can change quickly.

For photography it is best to use the morning or afternoon light that highlights architectural details of the former synagogue. Interesting pictures are also obtained from the view of the historical Jewish cemetery, where calm atmosphere and trees create dramatic contrasts. When shooting a cemetery it is necessary to respect the place and do not disturb the peace.

In the vicinity, within short walks or a fast car ride, there is a historical Jewish cemetery, which is a natural part of the visit. For families with children, it is advisable to include a short walk around the village and its surroundings, which is safe and undemanding, while visiting the cemetery should be accompanied by an explanation of the importance of the place.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring in Podmoklech brings to the surroundings of the synagogue the awakening of nature, when the surroundings of the building are green and light is softer and diffuse, creating a calm and thoughtful atmosphere. At this time the visit is ideal for those who prefer silence and privacy because the main tourist season has not yet begun. The practical advice is to wear layered clothes because spring weather is usually variable and it can be cold in the morning and evening. The best time to visit is in the morning when visibility is good and the temperature still does not allow long walks, so you will stay with the monument for just a short while.

Summer offers the longest days and brightest lighting, which reveals architectural details of the synagogue in full shine. The atmosphere is more lively, but with this comes larger crowds of visitors, especially on weekends and in the main summer season. It is recommended to arrive as early as possible in the morning, ideally before 10 o'clock to avoid the largest groups and heat. Clothes should be light and breathable, suitable for higher temperatures, and sun protection such as a hat or sunglasses is essential. Since this is a smaller location, the crowds are not as massive as the large urban monuments, but the morning is still the quietest.

Autumn brings golden and red tones of leaves to Underwater, which contradict the stone structure of the synagogue and create a picturesque, romantic character. The light is lower and warmer, which gives the whole space an intimate and nostalgic atmosphere. It is a time when visitors often avoid summer crowds, and therefore there is peace and space for contemplation. Practically, it is advisable to put on warm jackets and layers as the undernight temperatures fall and may be wet. The most appropriate is a visit in the afternoon when the light is the most beautiful, but there is still enough time to return to the finish line before dark.

The winter in Underwater is cold and often snowy, which wraps the synagogue into a white veil and creates a quiet, almost mystical atmosphere. Short days and low sun shorten the time when the monument is visible in daylight, and the lighting is cold and sharp. It's a period for lovers of peace and winter, but it requires thorough preparation. Clothes must be very warm, including gloves, scarf and winter shoes, because you can only stay out for a short time. Due to the shorter daylight and the possible reduction in traffic, it is best to visit the memory in the morning, when the temperature is highest and the sun is highest to minimise the risk of fast darkness and unpleasant cold.
